Chapter 277

She gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stay conscious.

She couldn’t pass out, not before she brought her babies safely into the world.

A loud wail echoed through the delivery room.

“It's a boy, and there's another one on the way,” the doctor announced.

The nurse carefully swaddled the newborn.

Aurelia felt drained, too weak to focus, her vision blurring.

"Deep breaths, now push a little more, the other one is nearly here,” the doctor instructed. Aureliaclenched her fists, summoning the last of her strength, before her consciousness began to fade.

In her dazed state, she heard the cry of a baby and the doctor's voice, “This one’s in a criticalcondition, we need to start resuscitation immediately...”

She struggled to open her eyes, to see her babies, but her eyelids felt heavy... She was out for along time. When she woke, it was already evening of the next day.

Opening her eyes, she saw Leopold, who looked haggard, hair tousled and face pale, sorrow acrosshis

features.

He had regretted leaving as soon as he got overseas, he shouldn't have left when she was about togive birth. His anger had clouded his judgement. He had planned to return that day, but fate hadother plans.

"Aurelia, you're awake. You scared us all,” Jolin's voice rang out from nearby. She had planned to callArnold yesterday, but Ferne had stopped her. Seeing Leopold rush in like a whirlwind that morning, she sensed something was wrong, but she didn't ask, didn't say anything.

Aurelia’s first thought was of her children, “Where are they, where are my babies?”

“Here... here it is.” Jolin brought one of the babies to her side.

Only one! A cold dread filled her heart as she asked, “Where's the other one?”

“That baby..." Jolin's voice choked with emotion, “He didn't breathe when he was born, and thedoctors couldn't save him!"

It was as if a thunderbolt had struck inside Aurelia’s head, leaving her dizzy and trembling.

A sharp pain cut through her heart, as if a dagger was stabbing into her over and over again.

“I heard him cry, how can he be gone? I need to see him, I need to see my baby!" Saying so, shetried to sit up, but a wave of pain swept over her, forcing her back down.

Leopold rushed to support her, “Aurelia, you need to stay calm!”

But she couldn't. She had heard her baby cry! Was it a hallucination?

“I want my baby!” Tears gushed from her eyes like a fountain.

“Aurelia!” Leopold's hand cupped her pale cheek, attempting to clean her tears. She turned awayinstinctively, a hint of resentment in her heart. If he hadn't left, if he was by her side, maybe theirbaby could have survived.

Her rejection felt like a stab to his heart, causing him a dull pain.

"We'll take care of the baby,” he said. He had seen the baby, only once, he couldn't bear to look asecond time. He hadn't protected his son well, and that was his fault! He couldn't forgive his ownnegligence!

Tears streamed down Aurelia’s face, soaking her hair and his fingers.

He seemed so calm, and his health was fine. Her babies probably wasn't important to him anymore, was he? He could have more babies in the future, with Evelyn or someone else.

A bitter taste spread through her mouth and down to her stomach, more potent than the bitterestherb.

“Let's divorce, and get it done today,” she said, her voice weak but clear.

Leopold's heart lurched, as if he had been shot. He slowly withdrew his hand, resting it on the bed.He lowered his head, saying nothing, as if his voice was stuck in his throat.

Jolin was taken aback, thinking her daughter was talking nonsense out of grief, “Aurelia, what areyou saying? Divorce? You're not even married yet?”

Leopold turned to look at her, swallowing hard before his hoarse and low voice found its way out,"Aurelia and I are married. The babies are mine. We didn’t announce it for the safety of her and thebabies.”
