THE DEVIL HERSELF
Chapter 52

000 POLICE DEPARTMENT 000

The recent massacre had left the city in a state of heightened tension. The police department had been working tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the killings, but leads had been scarce. Today, however, brought a glimmer of hope. One of the presumed dead victims had been found alive, albeit barely, and rushed to the medical department. After a month in a coma, he had finally regained consciousness.

Inspector Isabella and her team walked briskly through the hospital, their faces set with determination. They passed Diego's ward, glancing briefly inside before moving to the next room. After a quick inquiry with the receptionist, they confirmed the location of their witness.

Isabella entered the room, her team following closely behind. She approached the bed where the man lay, still pale and weak but alert. She offered a reassuring smile as she introduced herself.

"Good morning. I'm Inspector Isabella," she said, her voice calm and professional. "This is Detective Hernandez and Officer Clark. We're here to ask you a few questions about what happened to you."

The man nodded slowly, his eyes wary but cooperative. "I'm Thomas Reed," he replied, his voice raspy from disuse.

"Thank you, Mr. Reed," Isabella said, taking a seat beside his bed. "We understand you've been through a lot, but any information you can give us will be invaluable. Can you tell us what you remember about that night?"

Thomas took a deep breath, his eyes glazing over as he recalled the events. "It was chaos," he began, his voice trembling. "We were ambushed. There was blood everywhere, people screaming... I tried to fight back, but they were too strong." "Who were they?" Hernandez asked, leaning forward. "Did you recognize any of them?"

Thomas shook his head. "No, they wore masks. But... there was a woman. She stood out. She was fierce, like she was leading them. They called her DVV. Devil's Venomous Viper."

Isabella exchanged a glance with her team. This was the first solid lead they had. "Did you hear any names? Anything at all that could help us identify them?"

Thomas closed his eyes, trying to focus. "I heard them mention someone named Scarlet. And there was another name... Ace, I think. But that's all I remember." Isabella nodded, jotting down notes. "Thank you, Mr. Reed. You've been very helpful. We'll do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice."

As they left the room, Isabella felt a sense of hope. They finally had names to go on, and the investigation could move forward. However, the sense of relief was short-lived. Unbeknownst to them, a masked police officer entered Thomas's room shortly after they left.

The officer approached Thomas's bed, his face hidden behind a mask. Thomas looked up, confusion and fear in his eyes. "Who are you?" he asked, his voice shaking.

Without a word, the officer pulled out a pillow and pressed it over Thomas's face. Thomas struggled, his body thrashing as he fought for breath. The sound of his muffled cries filled the room, but the officer held firm, his grip unyielding. After a few agonizing minutes, Thomas's movements slowed, then ceased altogether. The officer removed the pillow, checking for any signs of life. Satisfied that Thomas was dead, he left the room quietly. Stepping outside, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number saved as "Boss".

"It's done, although he gave out false information misleading the police" he said tersely before hanging up.

Back at the hospital, Scarlet felt a chill run down her spine. Something wasn't right. She stepped out of Diego's room, glancing around the corridor. Everything seemed normal, but she couldn't shake the feeling that someone had been watching her. After a moment, she re-entered the room, her unease lingering.

000 IGS OFFICE ☐☐☐

Inspector Isabella walked into the IG's office and saluted with respect. The Inspector General, Daniel Morgan, nodded in acknowledgment. "At ease, Isabella. What do you have for me?"

She presented her replaceings, laying out the evidence. "We've discovered that the killings were part of a turf war between two major mafias: Scarlet Scorpion Evo X and Hunter's Clan. The recent massacre appears to be an act of revenge. Our witness identified a woman called DVV-Devil's Venomous Viper. We believe she's a key player in this war."

IG Morgan leaned back in his chair, considering the information. "This is significant, Isabella. But without a clear identity, we're still in the dark. What do you suggest?"

"We need more information," Isabella replied. "I propose sending an undercover officer into their ranks, disguised as an orphan with nowhere else to go. This will give us a chance to gather intel from the inside."

Morgan nodded slowly. "It's a risky move, but it might be our best shot. Proceed with your plan, but be cautious. We can't afford to lose anyone else."

Isabella saluted again. "Yes, sir. Thank you." She turned and left his office, heading to her own to start preparations for the undercover operation.

As Isabella walked to her office, she was unaware that their conversation had been recorded. A junior police officer, standing by the door, had captured every word. He quickly sent the recording to a number saved as "Boss," along with a message: "Isabella is taking up the case, and the IG is favoring her. You need to act fast if you want to take the glory."

The recipient of the message, a high-ranking officer with his own agenda, smirked as he read the text. "Isabella won't know what hit her," he muttered, already planning his next move.

Back at the hospital, Scarlet's sense of unease grew. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. She looked around the room, her instincts on high alert. "What's wrong, Scarlet?" Tyler asked, noticing her tension. "I don't know," she replied, her voice low. "But I can't shake the feeling that someone was watching us."

Rachel frowned. "Do you think it's connected to the attack?"

Scarlet nodded. "Possibly. We need to be on guard. There's more to this than we realize."

As they talked, the masked officer who had killed Thomas slipped out of the hospital, blending into the crowd. He had done his job, but the game was far from over. The war between the mafias and the police was just beginning, and everyone involved would have to watch their backs.

*******

Inspector Isabella was determined to bring the culprits to justice, but little did she know, the real enemy might be closer than she thought. Scarlet and her team would have to navigate a world of treachery and deceit, where trust was a rare commodity and danger lurked around every corner. The fight for control and justice had only just begun, and the stakes were higher than ever.

HAS THE WAR TRULY ENDED???
