The Failed Rejection -
Chapter 17
Penelope as always felt a renewed energy and strength talking to her family. Penelope finished her task which was transcribing a lecture and then took a break. Penelope decided to check her emails. She hasn’t checked them in awhile, not since before the funeral.
Penelope read Noah’s emails with tears in her eyes. They are so impersonal, it’s like a robot has written them. He doesn’t even ask why she has stop writing them. Penelope is so confused and doesn’t know how to respond.
“What do I do?” Penelope whispers out loud. Noah isn’t cheating, She doesn’t feel any betrayal pains.., unless we are too far apart.
“No we’d feel them,” Koko insists. Penelope took a breath. Penelope took a deep breath.
“What do I do Koko? Do I email him back? He doesn’t seem to care that I am not emailing him back. These emails just seem to be autogenerated.”
“Miss mate,” Koko said. Penelope sighed, she decided to go ahead and email him. It was best to appease her wolf, the sad thing was Noah was most likely doing the same thing.
Penelope shoved the thought aside and quickly emailed her mate. She kept her emails similar to his. She simply told him that her classes had started, and she was busy adjusting. Penelope didn’t mention her fathers passing, it felt too personal and painful.
Penelope went back to her school work after sending the email. Then got into bed. Penelope had a hard time falling asleep thinking about her mate. Penelope woke up and went to her classes. She didn’t have classes with anyone she knew except for the i***t Max. He tried to talk to her but she ignored him.
The first week of her classes were over and Lili checked in with her again. She offered to come out, or to have Jackson to come out. Penelope told her that while she appreciated the offer, and may cash in later she could get by on her own. Penelope had always been strong and independent. It was time to stay that way.
Her professors strongly recommended a study group and she was having a hard time replaceing one. When Chris ask her if she had found one yet. She wanted to lie, but admitted that’s she hadn’t. Chris offered for her to come and see if theirs would be a good fit for her. Penelope wanted to say no, but she couldn’t deny she needed to replace a group.
She was due to meet the group tonight, she was walking to her dorm when max stopped her.
“What do you think you are doing?” He demanded.
“Going into my room, why are you following me?” Penelope asked. While Penelope seemed relaxed her wolf was on edge. She had her guard up.
“Is there a reason you think you can follow me into my room?”
“You can’t come to study group.” Penelope was done playing nice,
“Look I’ve had it with your shi.t I’m done playing nice. You need to back off,’or you won’t like the consequences.” Max laughed,
“Oh yeah? What will you do to me?”
“I will go to the Dean of students and tell them that you have been harassing a female student. You haven’t exactly been subtle. Hell the first time you did it was in front of a professor.” Checkmate. Penelope had him by the throat and he knew it, he knew she could have him expelled in a heartbeat. Fury showed in his eyes.
“Your a wolf aren’t you? I’ve known for awhile.” Max smiled thinking he flipped the script on her, he was too dumb to realize that he just dug his hole even deeper.
“Hows that if your so smart.”
“I’m a medic, I’ve seen a lot of sh.it over the years.”
“Like what?” Penelope was curious.
“Different color eye changes, responses to drugs that shouldn’t happen.”
“Oh really like which ones? I only know about a few of them from other doctors.” Max was pissed,
“That’s not the point. What is the point, is that I got you and you have to do whatever I say, starting with you not going to the study group.”
Penelope couldn’t help but laugh at the i***t before her.
“What? What’s so funny?” Max asked.
“You think your smart, but your really just an i***t. Do you think your the first human who has figured out that there are supernaturals out there? What do you think happens to them? They get killed.” Max started to look a little scared,
“You, you are just a tiny little girl.”
“Who turns into a one hundred and fifty pound killing machine.” That May be a bit generous.
“And I’m just of Gamma b***d, I’m no alpha.”
“What’s an alpha?”
“It’s our ranking system. But they aren’t who some one like you should be afraid of. You should be afraid of the council.” Penelope pulled out her phone and started texting Brad.
“What are you doing?”
“Texting my brother, he’s a Delta.”
“What’s your ranking system like?” Max seemed curious. Penelope looked at him and it all clicked into place.
“Don’t tell me your one of those who want to be a werewolf.” Max seemed offended,
“What no of course not. I wouldn’t want to be a filthy Werewolf.” Right then, he was a hunter. Or open to be recruited by hunter. This was dangerous. She really needed Brad out here ASAP.
“We are not filthy! We are just trying to life our life’s! You humans could be considered filthy! Always starting war, terror, killing each other. And what for? Huh? What for?” Max look taken aback then sneered at her.
“You better not show up tonight.”
“Or what? You think you can take me?” Penelope taunted. “Even in my human form I’m stronger than you.” Max leaned in close and whispered,
“I guess we will see about that.” Max stomped out of the room, and Penelope let out a shaky breath. When she collected herself she called Jackson. After three rings he picked up.
“Hey Penelope what’s going on?”
“Hey Dad, I Um really need to get ahold of Brad.”
“Oh, okay. He’s here now taking care of something. What do you need him for?” Penelope debated whether to tell Jackson everything. But the encounter with Max really shook her up. Penelope taunted Max but she wasn’t much of a fighter. She trained whenever she was home, but thanks to school she wasn’t home much.
“I’m scare dad.” Those three words had Jackson on high alert.
“Whatever it is, we will get through it together. I will come right away.” Penelope let out a sigh of relief.
“Okay, well there has been this guy at school.”
“Has he been harassing you?”
“Yeah he has. I just thought it was the competitive nature of med school. But whenever he found out I was joining his study group he went nuts. He cornered me in my room and said he knew I was a wolf.” Jackson gasped,
“How?”
“I don’t know, he said he knew since he met me. He is a medic, and said he’s seen a lot of strange things. For a second I thought he would be one of those people who would want to be turned. But he hates werewolf’s.” Jackson grunted,
“So just waiting to be recruited by hunters then.”
“Yeah with Doctor training.” That’s what terrified her.
“Okay, I’ll let Brad know the situation, and be on the first flight out. You go to your classes like normal. But that’s it, don’t don’t the guy.” Penelope didn’t say anything, cause she had no plans on missing that damn study group.
“Penelope..” Jackson said warningly.
“I’m sorry dad but I’m going, I’m not letting this man scare me away from what I need to do.” Jackson sighed heavily,
“Why did I pray for girls again moon goddess?” Jackson asked and Penelope laughed.
“Because you know they are awesome.”
“Well mine are,” Jackson responded and her heart warmed. “Be careful, and keep your guard up.”
“I will, love you.”
Penelope hung up and got ready for the study group. Chris didn’t tell her what they planned on studying. So she just grabbed a bunch of her books and headed to the library cubicle Chris told her they reserved.
Penelope arrived and everyone was there. They were in the middle of talking about something when she went in. The talking stopped.
“Everyone this is Penelope, Max you know her already. Penelope you saw Leo but weren’t introduced.” Penelope waved, he didn’t say anything back. “Penelope this is Owen another member of our group.” Penelope waved again and he waved back but no smile on his face. They all went back to what they were saying as Penelope walked in.
“Chris don’t you have better notes than this?”
“Sorry man, it’s hard to keep up in that class,”
“What about you?”
“Me?” Penelope asked.
“Yeah I’m looking at you aren’t I?”
“How the fu.ck should I know? Im busy unpacking right now. If you want something from me. You can ask politely, and I will think about it.” Penelope replied back.
“Damn why do you have to be such a b.itch?” Owen replied.
“Why do you have to be such a pri.ck?” She fired back staring at him with an eyebrow raised. Penelope hated the term b***h she also didn’t understand why because she demanded being treated with respect made her a b***h.
“Penelope, May I please see your notes from microbiology?” Owen asked politely.
“Which one’s?”
“Your taking two classes?” Penelope let out a sigh.
“No, I have three notebooks for microbiology.”
“Three? We only have one.” Penelope rolled her eyes.
“I have two for every class. One for the slides and notes I take during class them I transcribe the teachers lecture.”
“How can u remember it?” Leo asked. Penelope simply pulled out the audio recorder.
Penelope spent the rest of the study group taking nacre of the group. Chris walked her to her dorm.
“We’d love to have you back next session.” Penelope shook her head,
“I don’t think your group Is a good fit for me Chris, but thanks for the invite.” Chris looks disappointed but didn’t say anymore. Yeah Penelope sure he would be, Penelope would be a great assets to the group. But it wouldn’t benefit her at all. It would actually drain her helping the other men.
Out of nowhere Max appeared.
“I told you not to come tonight!” He yelled at her. Penelope just sighed,
“Don’t worry, I won’t come again. And if I were you. I’d drop Leo and Owen. Those two are dead weight.” Before max could say anything else she slammed the door in his face. He pounded on the door for a minute but eventually ran out of steam and left. Penelope went to bed completely drained from the events of the last few days.
