The Lycan Series
Bullied By The Lycan King Chapter 26

Violet's POV

Minutes after she left, I couldn't stay still. I couldn't help feeling like I had just signed a deal with the devil.

I didn't even know her name. Yet she knew all there was about me. She knew about my history with Axel and she knew about my parents too.

I brought my fingers to my lips and I started chewing through them. What if this woman was playing me? What if she was sent by Axel to trick me into making a grave mistake? What if Axel truly wanted to kill me and all he was looking for was a good reason to do it? "No," I whispered. That couldn't be right.

He was the King of all wolves. If he wanted to kill me, I don't think he needed approval or anything from anybody. He was known to be the cruelest king that had ever ruled.

Killing me shouldn't be a problem for him.

But I couldn't replace a reason behind the veiled woman's presence.

Why did she just come today and everything was turning upside down? Could it just be a coincidence? Could heaven be trying to help me or was it the devil?

Why did she want to help me? What was in it for her?

A knock at the door made my soul jump out of my body. I held my chest in relief when the door opened and it was Hilda.

"Are you ready?" Hilda said and I became lost as I stared at the door and the keys in her hands.

If the door was locked, how did that woman come into this room? Did werewolves walk through doors now?

"Did you... leave the door open the last time?" I asked, unable to take my eyes off Hilda's hands.

She looked down at herself and then back at me. Then she frowned. "Don't tell me, fear is making you go crazy?"

If she had used keys, who gave them to her? Did Hilda-

"Hey?" Hilda said, shaking me out of my head.

"Huh?" I blurted, blinking back to reality.

"The ceremony is about to begin. You need to put your head together!" She hissed and moved away from me. "Yeah... Sure..." I whispered as I followed behind her.

She waited for me to step out and she closed the door with the keys. Then she led the way back to the throne room.

I wanted to ask her if she had given the keys to the veiled woman but I found my tongue suddenly heavy.

If the veiled woman was serious about helping me, then I would be jeopardizing my chances of survival.

"Are you okay?" Hilda asked as we got close to the throne room.

"Yeah... I am fine..." I said, forcing out a small smile.

She nodded once and continued walking. For the first time, I got a very thorough look at her. She wasn't as old as I had first thought her to be. She might have been around my age or maybe a year or two older. "Hilda," I called as we reached the large doors.

She stopped and turned to glare at me with her signature scowl plastered on her face.

"Thank you," I whispered. "No matter what happens in there, I want you to know that I am grateful for your help."

Her scowl faltered for a second before it returned and she turned toward the door.

"Just don't get killed for something you didn't do!" She mumbled before she pushed the door open.

As we got in, I could feel the pairs of eyes fixed on my body as I moved behind Hilda. I wanted to shrink back into my body but I pushed down my fears and held my head high.

My father always said, 'Guilty people were the ones who felt scared', I wasn't guilty. I would not let fear consume me.

I raised my head and looked around the room. It had somehow been rearranged. There were chairs placed in a circle around the center where a single broom sat. The veiled woman stood by the side with her fingers held together in front of her with poise and elegance only she could pull up.

Hilda led me to the center and gave a bow to Axel before walking to the side and leaving me to face my fate.

Axel's eyes bore deep into mine and I stared back at him, not for once faltering. It felt like he wanted to weaken my resolve with his deep stare but I refused to let him win.

It became a mini staring contest and for instance, it was just the two of us in the room.

His eyes were a darker shade of green as he glared at me. There was an emotion moving deep within them that I struggled to comprehend. But when I did, my heart dropped. He didn't believe me.

"The widow," he called, his voice deep and heavy with anger.

"Yes, my King." The veiled woman moved from her position and walked into the circle then she gave a dramatic now.

Axel waved his hand in my direction and then peeled his eyes away from me. "Here is the prime suspect. Do your work!"

The veiled woman straightened up and walked toward me.

"The ceremony is very simple," she began, her voice as sweet as honey. "Everyone who was present in the mansion at the time of her death will have to fly over the broom. If anyone trips, then they are responsible for Sweet Hera's death..." "What if no one trips?" The older man who was always by Axel's side asked.

His deep baritone voice, messing with the sweet tempo of the veiled woman's voice.

Low murmurs filled the room as everyone looked around, some agreeing to his question and some frowning like it was a waste of time.

I could tell that a lot of the people in Axel's council didn't like me and would do anything to see me die even if they knew I didn't kill Hera.

The widow-as she was called, cleared her throat and gained the attention of the room once again.

"If no one trips, then we can easily say lady, Lady Hera died of natural causes," her sweet voice said.

The man was not satisfied with her reply and he looked like he was going to speak but Axel held him back.

I also wasn't satisfied with her response. It made no sense. It was just a damn broom. Everyone could jump over it without tripping. The conclusion could already be met that Hera died of natural causes. Except if they had planted a trap...

My eyes quickly moved to the center of the room where the broom sat waiting for me. I checked the floor for any side of oils or water or anything at all that could make me a trip, but it looked clean enough. "Proceed," Axel growled and I returned my eyes to the veiled woman.

She moved her long-clothed arm toward the broom at the center and then turned to look in my direction.

"Since you are the prime suspect, we shall be commencing with you."

She started moving her long-clothed arms all over the place like one of those voodoo women in the old cities. Was this woman a witch?

If I wasn't tied up in all of these, I would have laughed at the drama she was pulling up. Was I the only one who thought she was faking this up?

I looked around the room to be sure I was the only one doubting this, and my eyes met those of Hilda's. She was glaring at the woman from where she sat with raised brows like she couldn't believe what was happening. Great, I was not alone in this.

My eyes moved further and I saw the older man by Axel, there was a scowl on his face and I couldn't tell if he just hated the widow or if he thought she was faking it up.

Finally, I studied Axel's face. The anger in his eyes was pushed to the side and his eyes sparkled with a hint of amusement as he watched the widow display at the center of the throne room.

Her arm moved back to the room and she raised her head to the ceiling and let out a deafening shrill. "Jump!"

I shook my head and began walking toward the broom. The sooner I got over this, the earlier the tension and spotlight around me ended.

I was about to jump when the Widow let out another one of her shrieks.

"Jump!" She yelled and my soul jumped.

I stopped and blinked at her. If she was going to keep shrieking like this then I was bound to be caught unaware and probably trip.

I took a deep breath and shut her out. I would not be killed for what I didn't do.

Then I jumped.
