chapter 19 Betrayed

Luca was distraught. He was so angry at Soccorah and Nancy right nowfor putting them and everything that they believed at risk like that.What infuriated him the most was the fact that they never consultedhim. In his father's absence he was in charge. Was it because he showeda bit more interest in school and his inheritance? Was he losing therespect of his pack simply because he'd chosen to be educated in thehuman realm? Or was it simply because he was seen as a half breed.Luca had to get out of the house. He was so angry that he just neededto run. He bust through the back door and jumped over the fence andheaded toward the woods. What would he tell his father? How could hetell his father that he was forced to reveal himself to an unsuspectinghuman? No one would want to follow him in his father's absence. Hewould be mocked and shunned by his pack. His father would be forcedto punish him to keep his position as alpha and all because of Soccorahand Nancy. The two persons other than his father whom he consideredfamily.

They went behind his back and he couldn't bring himself to forgivethem. At least if he could replace Luna, they could wipe her memory with apotion but she got away from him. This also puzzled him. He was thefastest in his pack, faster than even his father who was a full bloodedLycan. How could Luna be faster than him?The mere thought of thatperplexed him. Luca ran and ran till he got to the creek in the woodswhere he transformed and became human again. He sat beneath alarge oak tree on the bank of the creek and stared at the water. Thesound of the stillness of the water calmed him. Nature had a way withhim. For some reason he was at peace with nature. He loved the simplecomplexity of it all.

He needed to relax and calm himself before he could decide what to doabout this whole situation. He needed to rethink the events of thenight. This was supposed to be a great night. He was taken aback byLuna's beauty. She'd managed to occupy his thoughts and he wantedher. But now they were faced with this ugliness. It wouldn't have beenpossible anyway. She was human after all. If she had been anything elseshe would have defended herself instead of running. That was hispredicament. Luca son of the Lycan prince had fallen in love with ahuman. It was bad enough that his father had him with a human whichmade him half human but now he had fallen in love with one whom hewould probably never see again in his life.

As he lay under the tree lost in his thoughts for what seemed to behours, he was disturbed by a rustling in the bushes nearby. Luca got tohis feet and headed full force into the bushes from where the soundemanated and was ready to pounce when he realized that it wasSoccorah. “What the hell are you doing out here by yourself. Don't youknow how dangerous the woods are? You can't transform what if youwere attacked?” Luca shouted at her as he was already pissed at thembecause of what happened at dinner. “Well, I wanted to replace you toapologize. I never meant for this to happen. That soup was meant forLuna. She was meant to have it. It would have been harmless to her. Wewanted to be sure that she was supernatural and the potion in the soupwas to force her to reveal her true self. We never meant for things to gowrong. We never expected this outcome. We respect you and yourfather we would never defy or betray you.”

Luca threw his hands in the air and shrugged. “I sit here thinking what Iam going to do with you two for putting me in such a preposterousposition. I now have to worry what my father will think of me when I tellhim what happened. He never wanted me out here studying. I havebeen trying so hard to be the alpha that everyone expects me to be butlittle did I know that it would be my best friend and my mother's friendwho would ruin me.” Soccorah looked at him with tears in her eyes. Shewas swept away and dazzled by Luna from the first day in class andmaybe if she had told Luca of her suspicions from that first day thenthey would not have been put in this situation today.

So many things had happened. Luca was her only friend and they hadbeen through so much together she couldn't have him hating her likethat because of a dumb mistake. She asked him “Will you at least comehome so we could discuss how to handle this situation. We have a fewideas but we won't do anything without consulting you ever again. Thiswhole mess has proven that decisions without your alpha“s permissionwill end up with unimaginable ramifications.”

“You don't say” luca growled at her. With that she ran off and left himto his thoughts. Maybe she wouldn't tell anyone about what happened;maybe even if she did no one would believe her but his father wouldbee furious and he would lose his title in the pack. Why was he soworried about losing his title anyway? He had always been a rebel somuch that he wanted his father to be blessed with another son tounburden him but now he started feeling differently about everything.He wanted to lead his pack. He wanted to make a difference.

If he lost the respect and admiration of his pack everything would belost. He would never be able to implement the changes that he knewthat the pack needed to thrive. His dad was doing a good job but therewas so much more to be done. If he were to become pack leader, hecould make those changes. With those thoughts in his head, hecharged toward his house and got there in no time at all.

He went straight to his room got into the shower and went straight tobed. He had class in the morning and didn’t want to be late. He wasalready almost done with his midterms and wanted everything to bethe way that he'd planned. With his head in the right place, he fellasleep.
