Chapter 39 Carrying the Mantle

The packs were uneasy. The news of the Lycan king's death wasunsettling. The pack leaders were worried about the safety of theirmembers. The taking out of Luna's uncle a who was from the mostprominent and royal family had unhinged the members but Luna'spresence in the palace and the strength of the Lycan king appeasedthem but now that he was gone, things were not where it should be.Luca's grandfather, the old King had stated that Luca should rule butthis was undoubtedly going to be challenged by some of the Beta's ofthe royal bloodline. They already referred to him as a half breed. Luca,at the moment was not concerned about all that. He just wanted to layhis father to rest. He was busy with the preparations. Although therewere persons to handle it, he felt like he needed to do something, so heoversaw everything with Luna by his side.

She was a breath of fresh air in those trying times. All he had to do waslook at her and he would feel like everything was going to be fine.Deep down he knew that Lydia was still out there, and he needed to killher so that the packs would be settled once more. He knew that therewas unrest and had planned to take care of everything after theceremonies were done.

Luca sat down on his father’s bed staring into the nothingness. Heremembered how his parents had spoiled him when he was little andhow everything was perfect. His father had been so happy back then.Although his mother was a half breed, Luca had always been thestrongest. He even beat his father when training privately. He still hadso much to learn though. He cried in silence as he realized that hisfather was truly gone. If he had not been so weak and spoiled to letNina get so close to him then maybe his father would still be alive.She's lucky that she’s dead because he felt like he could reap her toshreds right now. But no matter Lydia would feel his wrath. He wasworried about how he would kill her though. She had magic on herside. He needed an edge to replace her and protect him from the spellsthat she cast.

He had to be smart about it. He now was responsible for his kind andhad to be less reckless. He needed to be smart and make betterdecisions, he couldn't appear weak in the eyes of his people. He onlystarted to realize why his father wanted him to stay in the pack and notgo to school in the human realm. He wanted him to concentrate onreplaceing a mate. He only started to understand his father and thepressure that he was under to secure an heir.

He thought that his father was going to be around forever, but destinyproved him wrong. He now had to grow up and fight to take control ofthe throne at such a tender age. He had one thing going for him. Hehad found his mate. He didn't know how much she was going to helphim through this situation. He didn’t know about her abilities yet. As helay down on his father's bed, he realized how much pain Luna musthave endured as he felt his own pain of the loss of his father.

He went to get ready and stopped by to pick up Luna for theCeremony. It was something that they needed to do together to beable to move on with their lives. They needed to say goodbye to theones that they loved. Now it was just the two of them. He was relievedthat he had found her. He needed to put his father to rest in order toconcentrate on her and making her his bride.

The ceremony was beautiful and very well planned. The organizers dida wonderful job. They shed a few tears but not too many as the peoplecouldn't see them portrayed as weak. As an alpha one had to be readyfor anything including death. His father had handled his well. Not evenhis only son knew that he was facing death. He hoped that he could beas good a leader as his father was. He had big shoes to fill and heneeded to prove himself to take up his father's touch.
