Chapter 91

Katrina's POV

"I know you're there, Katrina," Maria called out mockenly and I pushed back to where I was. Maybe if I pressed myself deeper into the wall, she wouldn't see me.

That was what I thought, but when my name rang out again, J wasn't certain about being invisible.

"Don't be foolish and just come out, Katrina," She was repeatedly calling out my name,

How did she see me? And how long had she known I was there? made sure to be quiet so there really wasn't a chance for her to know.

But the feeling of being caught snooping around filled me up and my stomach dropped.

Without much evidence, I didn't want her to know that I was onto her, but it seemed it was too late now.

I pressed myself against the wall, my breath hitching. Maybe she was bluffing. Maybe she hadn't really seen or heard me. Maybe she just heard something else and assumed it was me. Going out without being certain wasn't going to be a smart love on my part. But as my heart raced, I wasn't certain what to do next.

I could still escape before she came out, but I wasn't certain if I'd be able to run fast enough to make the cut into the closest

room.

And the closest room to be right now seemed to be locked, so it was another dead end.

"Come out," she said, her tone sharper now. "Don't make me drag you out like the sneaky little rat you

are."

At this point, I knew she actually heard something. She knew I was here but was just toying with me. But she hadn't actually confronted me. So there was still a chance of escape.

I swallowed hard, my mind racing. Should I run? Should I act like I wasn't there? But if she came looking, I'd be trapped. But my indecisiveness at this moment seemed to be a problem. "Should I count down?" Maria called out once more, and my eyes darted around for an escape.

"Five!" She called and my eyes fell on a door a bit further. I wasn't certain what was behind that door, but rushing into someone's room in the middle of the night didn't seem ideal.

"Four!" It felt weird having Maria count down for me, but for some reason I couldn't shake off the fear I was feeling. "Three! Come on Katrina, don't make this hard for us," I clicked my tongue, trying to decide on what to do then. Why was I scared? What's the worst she could do? I just found out that she had tried to kill me, shouldn't she be the scared

one?

Taking a deep breath, I stepped into the doorway, my hands clenched by my side. Maria was sitting on the edge of her bed with her arms crossed. Her lips were pulled into a cruel smile, her eyes glinting evilly,

If there was a perfect image of a villainess, it was going to be this

"Well, well," she drawled, tilting her head. "Eavesdropping, are we? Didn't anyone teach you manners?"

Who was she to talk about manners like attempting to end a life was the perfect example of having manners.

But again. It was midnight and I was creeping around someone's room, but it wasn't like I had stolen something.

And each time I thought about the fact that she was the one who had tried to kill me, it made my blood boil m.

I clenched my fists, forcing myself to stand tall even though my insides were twisting in fear. "What are you talking about?" I said, trying to sound calm.

Maria's smile widened, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Don't play dumb with me, Katrina. You heard everything, didn't you?"

I didn't respond, my silence confirming her suspicions. Why was she so worried about me heating things?

She stood up slowly, her heels clicking against the floor as she walked toward me. "You're a nuisance," she said coldly, stopping just a foot away. "I don't know how you've managed to survive this long, but trust me-your luck is running out." What? Isn't she just threatening me right now?

My heart raced, but I refused to back down. "You won't get away with this," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "I'll make sure everyone knows what you've done."

I would make sure I tell Silas about that, but she didn't seem to care.

Marie threw her head back and laughed. "Oh, Katrina. You think anyone will believe you over me? Silas barely tolerates you. Phillip saved you, but that doesn't mean he'll take your side. And me? I've been here longer than you. I know how to handle pests like you." My heart dropped when Aml realized that she was right m, but I didn't know what to do. I couldn't just remain silent when she could make another attempt on my life m,

I took a shaky step back, my mind screaming at me to leave, but Maria grabbed my arm, her nails digging into my skin. "Let me go," I cried trying to pull my arm out of her grip but it was no use. "You're hurting me,"

I don't think Maria cared abo

hurting me because the moment I said that, she dug her finger deeper into my arm.

"You think you're brave?" she whispered, her face inches away from mine.

"You don't know what real power looks like. But don't worry-I'll show you."

I yanked my arm free, my chest heaving. "Stay away from me," I said, my voice louder now.

I was acting too weak around here at the moment and I hated it. I wasn't certain if it was because I was still in shock about what had happened,

She smirked, stepping back as if she wasn't fazed. "Run along, Katrina. But don't forget-you're out of your depth here. You won't win."

Without another word, I turned and hurried out of her room, her laughter echoing behind me.
