The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 126
Madison POV
After some more words of goodbye and promises of catching up again soon, Addison got up on the cart and took the reins. She was going to drive the cart back, Ceclia and Lucy would ride along with her, Ezekiel and I shifted and Zakary gasped and spoke.
‘You are a white wolf? Wow, I have not seen one of your kind in many, many years. Do you take after your mother’s side of the family?’ I nodded my wolf’s head at him and he smiled, standing next to Alex and Anton and they waved us goodbye.
On my way back to the packhouse, I thought of what I had learnt while I was visiting.
Alex is a great Alpha and was okay with explaining things I did not understand.
For instance, I could not understand why they were stuck in the last tunnel.
In the past, rogues would arrive and use the caves to sleep in, and after a while they would just leave, and life went back to the usual way of things.
They didn’t know or understand what a rogue truly was, as they didn’t have rogues and had very little outside communication. The archive just said rogues were wolves without a pack, but not much was known about them.
When the number of rogue wolves started to grow higher than normal, they started to close off the connecting tunnels that lead to each cave entrance each night, so the rogues at each cave entrance could only go a short way in and they could not reach the main tunnels to reach them. The rogues had been using the caves to sleep in and had not been a threat, and those closed-off caves were not guarded at night, only the main cave entrance was. When they attacked, they were caught unawares. The rogues worked together and killed the guards at the main entrance. They blocked the tunnel at first and then only had time to collapse one tunnel to their main tunnel, that led to the bulk of their pack.
They knew of the rogues being around, and had never really had any issues with them.
They did not understand who these rogues were and why they suddenly became so aggressive.
Never before had so many been that close by their main entrance or even taken over so many of the caves. This was all new to them.
The blocking of the caves was only something they had started to do because of fear of being found, and then, with so many arriving quickly, they were confused. Fear of being found and killed, made them decide to collapse more tunnels, to keep themselves hidden and safe.
The way of life has always been this way: closing off a cave area and waiting for the wolf to move on, any stray wolves would replace the caves, usually only stay a short time and then leave. This was different and left them not understanding or prepared for the invasion of their homes.
I understood their plight.
These changes were so unexpected.
Generations have done the same thing, and suddenly you have something new to deal with and no one with any experience in that type of event.
They are making many new changes to the way they handle things, plus they are no longer a secret.
Although they will not all go to the surface, many have never even seen sunlight and don’t have the urge to venture out.
It is the young ones that are starting to go out and explore and more change is on the way, whether they like it or not.
Betsy was enjoying the run. She had always enjoyed having the freedom to run as she wished. I gave her free control as long as we ended up back at the packhouse. She jumped on Ezekiel’s wolf’s back and sprang off when he growled at her. She nipped his ankles and danced around him, annoying him. She loved it. Betsy jumped over logs and chased a rabbit, not to catch and eat it, just have some fun, she could hide in the white snow, with her white fur and bounce out at Ezekiel and then jump back into a pile of snow, disappearing from sight.
By the time we reached the packhouse, Betsy was all tuckered out and was happy to give back control and curl up and have a nice nap.
I followed the cart to the back of the packhouse, and helped the ladies down. They thanked me for taking them back to visit the family and Addison was full of praise of the visit to the Deep Earth pack, and hoped to get a chance to go there again. Then I promised we would try and do another lady’s day out and visit the pack. It seemed to be a much nicer day out than the usual shopping trips.
Unpacked some dried and bottled foods the cook at the Deep Earth pack wanted me to take to Mary as a thank you for all she had done.
Having the assistance of two warriors, we carried the boxes of food to the kitchens. Mary squealed with delight when she saw some of the pickles and jam sent to her from Matilda, the head cook at the Deep Earth pack. I thought a new friendship had just been born, even if they never met in person, they had met through food.
I got lots of hugs and k****s and gushing about the food I had delivered and messages to take back next time if I go, to see Mary so full of love and life, she could make the most bitter person smile, or so I thought. How could you not smile at such a warm person?
