The Wannabe Warrior
Chapter 135

Zane POV

Since waking up, I feel so terrible, I am very tired, it is as if I have not slept for days, and my head is pounding like thunder is rolling around my head and every now and then the lightning hits a spot and sends shards of light flickering behind my eyes.

Food helped my stomach and it was good to have the family support, but now sitting in dad’s inner office, I am having trouble staying awake, Madison has hold of my hand and I can feel her warmth spreading up my arm, but I am not sure I will remember half of what dad it saying, something about more double crossing and traitors, but I just can’t keep my eyes open.

Unsure when I actually had fallen asleep, I woke up in my room, the curtains closed and the room was silent, which meant Madison was not there.

I crawled out of bed and went to have a shower, a quick wash and get dressed, and headed down stairs to replace the family and get them to tell me what I missed again.

It was late in the afternoon, not far from dinner time, so I headed to dad’s office and would wait for dinner. My stomach tells me it is time for food, but then when my stomach does not ask me to put something in it, it seems I am always hungry lately.

Dad is sitting at his desk, with Jonathon by his side, and I wonder what is happening.

‘Hey Dad, Jonathon.’ I greeted him as I walked over and took a seat in front of dad’s desk.

‘Hey, son, how are you feeling? Did you sleep well?’ dad asked and Jonathon just gave me a smile.

‘Yeah, dad, slept deep, I am sorry for missing the meeting, I was just so far gone.’ I said, feeling a little guilty.

‘You needed your sleep. You have slept almost a full twenty-four hours. I just hope you will recover quickly. We need you son.’ Dad said with a soft smile, as he took a coffee from the table and took a large gulp from it.

‘Where is everyone?’ I asked. What I meant was where my mate was, but I was not going to ask that straight out.

‘We have sent a group off to the Dark River Pack’, Jonathon said as he made me a coffee and placed it on the table and a small cake.

‘What is happening there?’ I grabbed the cake and took a large bite. I could not stop the soft g***n from escaping me as I ate the sugary sweet cake.

‘We don’t know, that is part of the problem. They have not answered any of our calls and Madison said they have not used the two computers that she had hacked a few days ago, not since before the ball, we need to get some eyes in there, and replace out what is going on.’ Dad said, as I swallowed the cake and took a sip of my coffee, thinking of what I know of the Dark River pack.

‘Who have you sent?’ I asked, wondering if Peter and Graham had gone and if they had kept Addison there at the packhouse. She does not look like a person who would fight.

‘We have the Blue River warriors along with a number of our own veterans, about one hundred and fifty men in all.’ Jonathon replied carefully.

‘Okay, who is leading them?’ I felt like they were holding back on something and I had an uneasy feeling that I knew who.

‘We have Peter and Graham; Mitch is driving one of the buses and the overall leader of the mission is Madison.’ Dad said and I felt my stomach drop and my cake suddenly felt like lead in my stomach.

‘Madison?’ I whispered, hoping if I didn’t say it out loud it wouldn’t be true.

‘Yes, son, she is the best we have, what can I say, we need the best out there.’ Dad tried to reassure me that it was for the best, but my mate is out there in the thick of battle and I am here resting. That just does not sit well with me and I know if I had Blaze back, he would have taken over control and trashed dad’s office.

‘I feel useless, I should be out there doing the fighting, not my mate.’ I say sadly, feeling the loss of my self-esteem.

‘Rubbish, even if you had your wolf and in full control, Madison is still the one to send. She had all the knowledge of what is going on, better than any of us, she has the war mentality we need, sorry son, but if I had to choose between the two of you as to who is the better war officer, it would be Madison. She has a quick mind, and sees things we don’t. Look how fast she saw the advisor issue and has so far found many traitors. It was Madison that found out that Russel was a traitor, and, by the way, he is still in the dungeon waiting for us to question him. I have been holding off on that for two reasons. One is that he can sweat it out, wondering how much we know, and the other was so you could get down there and question him. I thought you might like to get some of your frustration out on him, Madison has left us a new batch of the drug for us to try out.’ Dad said enthusiastically and I couldn’t help but join in with his enthusiasm. I did need to get this feeling I have inside out, and I think hitting a real face instead of a punching bag, would be a good way to do it.

‘Let’s have some dinner and then, if you feel up to it, we can go to the dungeons and have a little chat. Madison and the team should be near the camp site by now, and be checking in.’ Jonathon suggested and headed to the door, and I felt kinda guilty. I was angry and worried that Madison was gone and yet Jonathon had his twins out there in the thick of it and he had to be worried about them both.
