The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 157
Madison POV
Sleep was peaceful, having at last spoken to those I love at home, I was happier, more mentally prepared. Dad sounded like he lost it when he heard my voice, and I thought he left because he did not want to cry in front of me, or should I say over the mic, he was always one to try and put on a brave positive face, even when things were bad, so I understood him leaving and did not hold it against him.
Ezekiel to me sounded glad he had some direction now, and that maybe they were using the Deep Earth people and that we had a glimmer of hope that they could help us, if going to the Dark River pack took an hour underground, they might be able to reach me quicker too. If they had a deep Earth pack up this area somewhere, and to me, I could not see why they wouldn’t. A mountain means caves, and caves mean those lovely people could be close by. I was pinning my hopes on that, it was something to hold onto when that woman is close, and I hope to replace out what she has in store for me soon and if I can actually do what she wants while I wait for my mate to arrive.
Morning came and I was calm and though not happy to be here, I was happy inside, the feeling I had gained from talking to the family was the best and I clung onto it with all the yearning I could replace, wishing that whatever was to come I was as prepared as I could be.
I rolled over and could see the red light was on, so they were watching me as I woke. I decided to grab some clothes and go have a shower. I showered and dressed in the bathroom and came out in a dress that they had left me to wear and my hair wrapped in a towel, I sat down in front of the mirror and started to dry my hair, as I did this, looked at the area where the camera was in the mirror, and flicked my eyes past it, and as I did this, I saw it was just a camera and no sound, and that made me feel a little better, I hoped that I was quick enough for those watching me not to realise I had seen the camera. I followed through with the movement and put my head forward and pulled my hair over my face and slid the brush through my hair, and started to do a good brushing. It was not like I had a lot to do, so I took time with my morning grooming. It was a nice change for me. My hair was getting longer and I thought about cutting it.
After I had brushed my hair for a while, I flicked it back and plaited it and pulled it behind me. I found they had some beauty products and I looked through them. None were really my style so I left, put them on the side.
The door unlocked and Linda walked in with a tray of food, she placed it on the table and looked around the room, picked up my dirty clothes and the tray from last night and walked out, no morning greeting and she would not look into my eyes, she sort of looked about my waist height and that was about the only acknowledgement she gave that I was even in the room, mind you I did not say a word either, I was waiting to see what she would do or say, and well now I know, she is most likely not allowed to speak to me, just do what she is ordered to do and leave, having seen the type of woman Gladys is, I doubt many would try to defy her.
I lifted the cover off the tray, bacon and eggs and sausage, a bowl of cereals and a small jug of milk, coffee, toast and jam. I lifted the coffee to my mouth and breathed in the aroma before taking a sip. The coffee was nice, and no drugs. I picked up a piece of bacon and as I went to take a bite, sniffed it and it was okay too, so I ate the bacon.
In the corner of my eye, I could see the red light blinking and wondered who was watching. Was it Gladys or her son? Or just someone that has to monitor me, and let Gladys know if I do anything suspicious.
Working on my breakfast, I ate the sausage and toast, and left the eggs and cereals. I think the milk had a drug in it, or it was milk from something other than a cow. Either way, I was not going to use it.
Having eaten, I decided to grab one of the books from the shelf and start reading. I had little else to do with my time.
The book I had chosen was one about this region.
It had a history of the township and the people, and the name of the river and mountains. I now knew where I was and it was kind of a shock. I knew I was north of my home, but I was closer to home than I had first thought. The trip here was a sort of half circle around the mountains to end up less than twelve hours away from home if you could run here across the terrain and that is where the problem was. The terrain to get straight across here was almost impossible, with a wide river and a deep gorge, thick marsh area and other obstacles. The township had only one main road and during summer that was the only way to reach the town. In winter you can cross the frozen water, if you dare, after you somehow get across the deep gorge.
Not a bad hiding place, but to me, it meant nowhere to escape if you came under attack and couldn’t go over the mountain, it is too high, and according to the book, there were no large animal tracks around the mountains, no large herds to make them, up here in the frozen wasteland pocket, and other than fishing in the river and hunting, the area had no industry.
The lock on the door clicked and in walked Jacob, dressed in a fine-looking suit and shiny shoes, his hair was shoulder length and his face was clean shaved, eyes of deep blue and not too bad to look at. I reckon he could have any girl he wanted, and a head turner, just not my head. He looked like he was about to go on a date or an important business meeting, his face had a gentle smile about it, and he even had kind eyes, but how much of that look could be trusted was yet to be discovered.
