The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 16
Zane POV
Stretching out, I slowly woke up, feeling well rested and ready to start the day. Then I remembered what happened early this morning, and rolled over to grab my mate, only to replace a cold empty bed. I sat up in panic and reached over for my phone. The time was just after one in the afternoon, shocked at how late I had slept, which, by the way, was the best night’s sleep ever. Crawling out of bed and headed to the bathroom, time to get cleaned up and replace out where my mate is. Where Mitch would send her to first, hopefully nothing too dangerous on the first day, as we scope out her abilities.
The first stop would be food, my stomach grumbling loudly, reminding me I had missed breakfast and needed filling fast.
Headed to the kitchen for something to eat, and found my lovely Mary there, cooking up a storm. She is the best cook, the food she manages to create is the best than anywhere I have been. When we go out visiting other packs, their food is never as good as here. Then, I maybe a little bias, Mary, is a nice Omega, that has been the cook here since before I was born, so her cooking was what I grew up with, and she would often spoil me with little cakes and treats when I was a young pup.
‘Mary, Good Morning, angel.’ Sweet-talking her and giving her a little peck on the cheek, hoping she has some left-over lunch, I can grab.
‘Zane, Congratulations, I hear you have found your lovely mate.’ Looking past me to the door, I just entered with a frown. ‘Where is she?’
‘Thank you, Mary, I don’t know where she is at the moment. I was going to get something to eat, then see father or Mitch to see where they sent her.’ I replied as I dug into the large fridge, could see some left-over roast meat and gravy I could warm up and put in a bread roll, yum.
‘Sent her? What do you mean? Why would they send her away?’ Mary looks like she is about to tear someone apart because they sent my mate away. Good to see she still has my back safely in her hands, she was always like a second mum to me.

‘My mate is the tracker from the Blue River Pack, sent here to help with the rogue problem. She was adamant to complete the task she was sent here to do, before settling down and learning what it means to be my mate, no matter how I feel about that.’ I replied proudly.
‘How do you feel about that?’ Mary asked as she handed me some fresh apple pie and ice-cream.
‘Like, I have no choice in the matter,’ I mumbled through the mouthful of delicious apple pie.
‘Madison is a force to be reckoned with, she will fight me all the way, to get out there and track. It is in her b***d, and I think once we have finished with the rogues, she will always want to be out there tracking, and I won’t have it any other way. However, I would like a chance to get to know my mate, before she galivants off out into the woods again. It is hard being a newly found mate, and having to let her do her job.’ I complained, between mouthfuls of pie.
‘You will work it out, a balance of some kind. She will be just as worried when you go out with men to fight rogues as you are with her out there trying to track them down.’ Mary could always replace a way to make me feel better, and not just the pie.
I gave Mary a hug and a promise to bring Madison to the kitchens to meet her. When Madison has a moment to spare, I am sure between the tracking and me out fighting, after she returns with places to go to, and then some sleep time, we won’t have much time for us, let alone. Socialising, will have to wait and see. I guess, so far, replaceing my mate is nothing like what I expected or dreamed it would be like.
Dad was in the meeting room, with Mitch, looking on the screen at the area that had caves and deep holes in the ground, and they were discussing something. They stopped talking the moment I opened the door and turned to look at me as I entered the room, and when I closed the door, they turned back to the screen and commenced talking again. Weird, my wolf says as I close the door. I internally shrug my shoulders.
Dad and Mitch eventually leave the screen and go to the table and look at the model on the table.
‘Son, come give us your opinion on something.’ Dad calls me over to the table.
‘Oh, before we start, can I see your mark? I saw Madison’s this morning and I think it looks interesting.’ Mitch asked casually, as if seeing my mate’s mark was an everyday thing.
‘You saw Mad’s? How come?’ I asked as I undid my shirt and showed them.
‘Yep, they look the same, very interesting; we saw Madison’s because your dad, here, needed to see proof that you two did something last night besides sleep.’ Mitch chuckled as dad gave him a dirty look about putting him in it.
‘Now, Madison had me phone four different packs, this morning, to have them detour around the cave section of the road.’ Dad says as he points to a part of the model on the table I know very well.
‘Why? What happened? What made her make you do that?’ I asked, staring at the model and rubbing the back of my neck as I thought.
