The Wannabe Warrior
Chapter 174

Madison POV

As I sat looking out the window, I noticed the red light coming back on again. Angry, I went to the bathroom to have a shower and brush my teeth.

I had just taken off my top, when a red light caught the corner of my eyes, turning to put my top in the hamper for collection, and a small growl left my mouth, when I noticed some dirt and ceiling dust on the side of the hamper.

Grabbing the tooth brush and toothpaste, I started brushing my teeth, and glanced in the mirror at the red light.

The noise I heard during dinner with Jacob must have been someone in the cavity above my room. Jacob had tried to talk or make noise to cover the person who was adding the new camera in the bathroom. I wondered if they had put one in the closet too, that would make my escape a little more difficult.

I finished brushing my teeth and removed my jeans, throwing them in the hamper and left the bathroom in only my underwear. Any idea of a shower had left my mind and the urgent need to escape had grown.

I sat, crossed-legged on the bed and looked out the window again, thinking about this new change. He was getting brazen, thinking he could sit holding me and now watching me in the shower too. I felt my b***d running cold and the need to leave here was all consuming.

I can no longer wait for Zane to get here. I must get out of here tonight, having made that decision.

I climbed into bed and waited for the red light to go out.

It winked off and then five minutes later back on, it blinked on and off like that for about three or four more times, before it seemed it would not come on again, deciding it was now or never, I climbed out of bed and headed to the closet.

If a man can crawl around in the roof cavity, then so can I.

How hard can it be?

Just need to somehow get up there and through that hole.

After closing the door, I stood under the inspection cover on the ceiling looking up at it and tried to work out how I could climb up to that cover, somehow.

I looked at the shelving and it did not look that strong, and the distance between the top shelf and the hole would be a challenge, but I am up for the challenge. I cannot risk staying here another day. Jacob is delusional if he thinks I am going to fall for him.

The first few of the shelves were close together and were easy for me half way up in a flash, the next was a bit harder, and so was the last one. I had no more shelves to grab hold of, no leverage of any kind.

I stretched, the inspection cover was just out of reach, I was only a little short, even on my toes and stretching as far as I could, still only managed to touch the cover and not move in any way. I needed a bit more height. Holding onto the shelf, I looked around for something to assist me. There was little in here that would help me.

Climbing back down to the ground, I grabbed some towels and placed them on the top shelf, and then thought about what else I had in the closet and bedroom. I opened the door and headed to the chairs and took off the cushions that covered the wooden seats and went back to the closet and I wrapped the cushions together with the towels and placed them on the top shelf, and climbed back up.

It was still a little short to do anything more than move the cover.

I climbed back down and put four more towels together hoping they would not separate, and then grabbed a pillow case and stuffed some clothes in there, making it as hard as I could, and climbed back up. This gave me the extra height I needed and I managed to push the cover aside and start to pull myself up.

I had to wiggle a fair bit to get my h**s in, but once I could get past my bottom, I slid the rest of the way in with ease and replaced the cover.

The area here between the ceiling of my room and whatever rooms were above me, was not large enough for me to stand up. I had no choice but to crawl. I set off in the direction of where I thought the mountains would be.

It was dusty and dirty and other than one set of footprints in the dust on the ground, no one seemed to have been up there in a very long time.

Carefully, I crawled, making sure I stayed on the beams and not touch the ceiling, fear of not only falling through, but making any noise. I had heard the man moving around up here, then they could hear me too. If I walked on the ceiling area and they were below me.

The space up here was very large, lots of support beams from floor to roof and long beams along where I was crawling. This would have made a great storage area, or a place as a child I would have enjoyed crawling around in. I was always one for investigating new areas, and I am sure I would have made some kind of use of this space.

At the end of the roof space, I found a small door that was not locked.

Opening it was difficult due to the high wind outside and heavy snow.

I had to put my shoulder against the door and strain against the door and push as hard as I could.

But I managed to open it.

Outside the door, was a small landing made of metal, and it was attached to the side of the building with steps going up and down, a small landing between each building level.

I stepped slowly down the steps, and taking in the area around me as I went down, there were some more buildings I could creep by, before I would reach the wooded area and, hopefully, freedom, plenty of places to stay hidden, just a little worry between buildings, but with Betsy being a white wolf, she should be able to move and not be easily spotted.

It was not long and I was on the ground, the steps were slippery, and I was getting cold and damp from the snow hitting me.

Betsy could not wait to get out into the snow. This was her perfect weather. She loved the cold and the snow-covered ground.

I shifted and let Betsy take control, and felt warmer almost immediately. She was born for this kind of weather, and I could feel her joy rush through me as she started to bound towards what I hoped was freedom.

She had some abilities I had not shared with anyone, not even dad, but I think dad would have known, as mum had this ability too. In wolf form, Betsy can hide her scent. I had never tried to see if she could hide my scent. I never had a reason. Only in wolf form have I had the need in the past. We may put Betsy to the test soon, trying out some of her natural abilities, some I have yet to explore, but she seemed confident in herself.

Betsy soon had us bounding around the side of the building and heading to the mountainside, where I hoped to replace a cave and Deep Earth people.

Betsy had to stop a few times as guards walked by. She hid in the snow, disappearing completely and blending in. One time, Betsy had poked her head out of a snow mound, and watched the men walk right by us. If she held out a paw, she could have touched them.

I smelt a lot more men hiding in the buildings as Betsy crept by them, and I wondered what was happening, it was as if they were expecting an attack and they were ready to ambush whoever was coming.

After Betsy managed to get past the last building, I smelt my mate and I lost control of Betsy as she bounded quickly in that direction.

Betsy approached him from the side.

There were a lot of men with him, some I recognised as Blue River warriors and that made me feel really proud of my old pack. They were still putting their lives on the line for me, and Betsy launched herself over the bush that was in the way of my mate. As I leaped at my mate, someone shouted, watch out.

I gained control from Betsy and shifted back to my human self and landed in Zane’s unexpected arms and saw his shocked face as I covered him with k****s as he held onto me tightly. I wrapped my legs around his waist and held on tight.
