The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 26
Zane POV
‘Heard anything from Madison, yet?’ my wolf was desperate to know as much as I did.
‘We have not heard yet. It was a four-hour run to the east caves. She should have reached them about half an hour ago. If Madison contacted anyone. She would be talking to Gerome. She is setting up cameras at the first four cave entrances. We can go to Gerome’s office and see how that is going. If that will settle you down a little bit, you are a mess.’ Mitch answers. I nodded in agreement and we headed to the hidden room that Gerome had set up for this special observation. Only a few people can enter.
The pack have set up other cameras around the packhouse, but that is in the main security room.
We walked in silence. I decided to myself, that once I had seen that my mate was doing well, I would ask what had been done with Karen and the six rogues that were brought in. They should have questioned them by now, and I hoped that Karen was exiled or dead. Both would satisfy me.
Mitch made his way into the room. It was a larger room than I expected, there were about twenty monitors, dotted along one wall, taking up the whole wall, each with a note on the bottom of each screen stating where it was. With or what it might be pointing to, with ten computers on a long bench like a table below the monitors, a large bench at the end of the room, with cameras and other equipment in pieces, the wall on the right looked like they were setting up more monitors. Near me, to the right of the door I entered, was a bench full of assorted equipment that had been completed. Sitting on a chair in front of a computer is Gerome. Three monitors were active. One showed a cave entrance, the one next to it showed the path to the right, away from that entrance, and the last one showed the pathway to the left from the cave entrance. This would mean Madison had reached the caves and was setting up the cameras. With three now in place, she has three more entrances to do, setting up three cameras per entrance.
I was relieved to see she had started her objective, and was watching the screens, until I saw six rogues exit the cave and head right, down the pathway to who knows where.
‘Where is Madison?’ I almost screamed, as I watched the rogues walk, until they were out of sight.
‘Relax, everything is going smoothly so far.’ Gerome says, with his head still on the computer and his fingers flying over the keyboard.
I stood motionless, waiting to see what was going on. Another six rogues exited the cave entrance and headed left, then ten minutes later we saw another six rogues.
‘Where are they going?’ I asked no one in particular.
‘That is why we are setting up cameras, with the aim of replaceing out. So far, this is more information and evidence we have had in months. I have to thank the goddess that that girl was sent here. She knows her stuff.’ Mitch says as he too watches the screens with interest.
Just as Mitch finished saying that, another monitor came alive, and my mate’s lovely voice was heard over the speakers.
‘Gerome.’ She spoke, her voice soft and gentle, no sign of panic or worry.
‘Tell me.’ He replies, his fingers still flying over the keyboard.
‘Monitor one, angled down the left path from the entrance of the cave, we have name number two, is now alive,’ then another monitor lights up, and my mate’s voice continues. ‘Monitor two, the entrance,’ and crackling sound comes over the speaker until her lovely voice speaks again. monitor three, angled down the right path from of the entrance. Tell me, the angles are good.’ Madison’s voice was clear and calm, information given, direct and sure.
‘Monitor number three needs to be angled down a little, to help compensate for wind. That branch must be small or very flexible.’ Gerome suggests.
The monitor with the path to the right, slowly angles down, a tiny bit at a time.
‘Stop, perfect. Move to the next entrance, we note the rogues are on ten-minute rotations.’ Gerome informs my mate before we hear.
‘Righto, will tell the lads to be on the look-out, do you want any captured?’ she asks, a hint of excitement in her voice, and I remember she is a wannabe warrior, not just a tracker.
‘No, wait and learn for the moment.’ Gerome’s calm voice speaks as his fingers continue on the keyboard.
‘Catch you in half an hour, the next entrance has a few little hazards to cross.’ Her voice disappears and she is gone. My wolf wants me to rush over there and protect her from those rogues, and help with whatever the hazards are that she mentioned, and I am not too far away from wanting to agree with him. Mitch’s hand touches my shoulder and I calm down.
‘Let’s head back, Alpha will want to know what we have seen.’ I nodded and turned and followed Mitch out the door; walking away from those monitors was very hard, I wanted to stay and watch, so I knew she was okay, and just to hear her lovely voice again.
