The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 30
Zane POV
Leaving dad’s office, I headed to Gerome’s room. I want another look at the monitors and see the activity for myself.
Gerome is busy on his computer, and barely acknowledged me entering the room. I watched the monitors for over an hour, keeping track of the rogues exiting the caves, and not once did they return to enter the cave.
This frustrated me.
Gerome, have you found out where they rogues are going?
‘Nope.’
I watched as Madison set up the next lot of cameras. This area was different from the other two, the trees were cleared and it seemed to be a training ground of sorts in front of the cave, then a face I recognised, came out of the cave. I
t was one of the Dark River Pack warriors we have stationed here, and he was with a man I did not know.’ I growled and left and headed to Alpha’s office.
To my surprise, Alpha was just leaving his office with Madison in tow.
My thrill at seeing my mate so early had me rush up to her and swing her around in the hallway, just missing Alpha with her feet. Her squeal of surprise made me happy.
‘Sweetheart, you are back early. I thought you had another set to put up.’ I queried.
‘Yep, we had a little mishap and came back early, so the warrior could get warmed up.’
‘Alpha, can we step back into your office for a moment?’
Alpha turns back and heads to the inner room.
He stands in front of the screen, looking at the slow changes that have been made.
‘Dad, I just saw one of the Dark River pack warriors on the monitor coming out of the cave. That cave has what looks like a training area in front of it.’
‘So, we are right. Madison had just met the Advisor and said he was covered in rogue scent and another one she had yet to identify. He must have showered or sprayed himself as I could not smell it, but Madison here could. Her tracker nose is good, we are headed to the barracks to see if she can replace the pack. Madison also said that he smells the same as the ones that killed her mother and Luna. We were going in the guise that we needed to check the barracks for the up and coming ball and, while we were there, see how everyone was settling in.
‘Dad, is Karen still here in the barracks? You said if you had proof of her tracking me, that you would put her in the cells.’
‘Yeah, I did say that, but your mother thought we could still use her in the barracks, so I allowed her to work there. If she makes one mistake, one hint of fowl-play and she is in the cell.’
I am walking with my arm around Madison’s waist. As we enter the first barracks, we walk down the halls of each floor, and then do the same with the second barracks, and then the third, on the second floor.
Madison turns pale and tightens her arms around my waist.
We have found the pack that has the same scent as the ones that killed Madison’s mum and her Luna.
This also confirmed that they are in cahoots with the rogues, as the rogues’ scent can be smelt even by me. Normally, we would have accepted the smell because they had been out and maybe come across some, but then why did none of the other barracks have the same smell, they had been around rogues?
‘Who is on this floor?’ I asked dad, as Madison trembled in my arms.
‘The Dark River Pack have this floor.’
‘Can we talk later in the office?’
‘Yep, later.’
We continued to check out the other barracks, and saw the staff doing a great job, preparing for the ball.
We came across a few warriors who bared their necks to Alpha and are pleased with the progress so far.
In the dining hall for the warriors, we see Karen flirting with some Dark River pack members.
We meet up with Graham and ask him to join us as we head back to Alpha’s office.
In the inner office, we called Mitch and Ryan and Gerome in, and we waited for the others to join us and for Madison to calm down. Graham was looking at her pale face and then at me, wondering what was going on.
‘Did you do something to my sister?’
‘No, you will get your answers when the others arrive.’ Alpha saved me the trouble of answering.
‘Coffee? Mad?’ Graham asks
And she nods her head, ‘Can you make me one too please, Graham,’ Alpha asks.
‘Zane, you want one too, while I am making coffee?’
‘Please.’
