The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 29
Madison POV
The frozen water was a challenge to cross. One poor guy fell in the cold water. When a thin part of the ice broke, once we managed to get him out and waited for him to shake out the water off his fur, and spray the scent spay, the warriors were all on high alert, cautious that rogues maybe close enough to smell the soaking warrior, they rushed the rest of the way across the slippery ice and rested briefly on the other side, giving the warrior a chance to clean himself up before we headed closer to the next cave. I gave him a protein bar and let him rest for ten minutes.
I ran on high alert all the way to the next cave.
This one had a large clearing before the opening, and no trees close by.
I have no choice, but to place them in trees far away.
‘Gerome.’ I call.
‘Talk to me.’
‘This cave has no nearby trees? How does this one look? Do you still want three set up?’
‘Yes, even at a distance we can see comings and goings.’
‘We have a warrior wet, the ice broke, going to skip the last cave and take him home. I can’t risk him getting sick.’
‘Noted, okay those cameras are good, come home.’ Gerome says.
The trip back to base was quick, running fast, worried about the warrior who got soaked. He was still wet and sneezing a lot. Hopefully, a warm soak in a bath tub should warm him up and his healing ability take over.
We parted ways when I reached back home.
I rushed up to my room and showered, put on some warm clothes and then headed to Gerome’s office.
I was interested to see the result of the cameras and the place settings.
I reached the little office, and slid a book to the side and the false door to the cupboard opened.
Gerome was busy on the computer, fingers flying over the keyboard. I placed a cup of coffee beside him and stood looking at the nine monitors. The angles are good and I am satisfied with the placement of each camera, even the last cave.
‘Catch you later, have to brief the Alpha.
Gerome nodded his head and took a sip of the coffee I had just placed beside him, his eyes never leaving the screen.
I knocked on Alpha’s office door and waited.
‘Enter’ I heard.
Alpha is with a man I don’t know, but by the smell of him, he is the man that associates with the rogues and has the smell that I remember from when I was six. I do everything I can not to growl at the man before me, and plaster a smile as I approach my Alpha and place a coffee on his desk.
‘Thank you, Madison, this here is the Advisor.’ He nodded to the man in the seat in front of him.
‘Greetings advisor, would you care for a coffee?’ I try to be polite, but all I want to do is rip his throat out.
‘No need, I was just passing through, I will head off now. Good to meet you, Madison.’ His silky-smooth voice and smirk on his face makes me feel dirty.
The Advisor stands and shakes Alpha’s hand and leaves the office.
I closed the door behind him and waited.
He does not walk away immediately, so I sit and just stay silent.
When we are sure he has left, Alpha pulls me into the other room.
‘Talk to me Madison, you turned very pale when you entered my office.’
‘The Advisor stunk of rogues,’ the Alpha nods his head, showing no surprise at my statement, ‘He also carries the smell of the rogues that killed my mum and Luna.’ I growled the last part, trying not to cry. I am shaking like a leaf, to have found one of my mother’s murderers.
That made the Alpha look up at me with sympathy and shock. I could understand how he was feeling at that moment.
‘Today, I only managed three cave entrances. One of our warriors fell in cold water when the ice broke under him. I thought it was better to get him back and warm up before he got sick and took longer to heal. The last cave we placed the cameras had a large open space in front of it that appeared to have been cleared of trees. Recently’
‘That is interesting. Maybe the main entrance? Do you think?’
‘Seems there is a lot of activity there, Gerome will be busy with those goings on over there and the other little ideas I keep handing him to see if they will work with what security plans he has.’
Alpha looks like he is in deep thought and I wait for a moment before asking.
‘I think I need to visit some of the warriors, see if I can replace that smell among them.’
‘We can do that. I need to inspect the barracks, and see if the ones for the ball are getting cleaned and ready. Come, we can do the inspection now.’
