The Werewolf King’s Runaway Queen -
Chapter 124
Alissa Soleil's POV
It's already been a week since the incident where I passed out.
It was an overwhelming experience.
It rarely happens that I end up dealing with patients like the one I had to deal with. But it wasn't a first.
I also experienced the same thing before when I was still a resident.
No one knew about it except Calum.
It was a case where the ex-girlfriend ended up beating the pregnant wife.
Fortunately, the baby survived then.
But it was still an experience that kept haunting me.
And then the one from a week ago happened and at night, I still dream about it.
What happened still haunts me.
Flashback...
"How long has she been passed out for?"
"Not too long ago"
"What happened?"
I slowly opened my and tried to push myself up.
"Soleil"
Cal rushed to my side and held me.
"What time is it?" I asked.
The Chief looked at me then at his watch.
"A little pass 3:40pm" he said.
I shook my head to wake myself up then tried to get off the hospital bed.
"Where are you going?" Calum asked.
"I have a surgery in 15" I said.
Cal sighed.
"Soleil, you just woke up. You weren't at your best state earlier" he said.
I looked at Cal seriously.
"I'm fine now, aren't I?" I said.
"Are you really?" Cal said.
I raised a brow at him.
"Do you think I won't be able to do my job well? Do you think I'll put my patient in danger?" I said.
Cal's jaw clenched.
"It's not that" he said.
"Then, let me do my job, Dr. Williams" I said and got out of the hospital bed.
The Chief followed me.
"Dr. Ellis" the Chief called me.
"I fainted, yes. But I didn't faint because I was sick. It was a momentary thing. I'm fine now. Please let me do my job" I said and stopped walking then faced the Chief.
"Please. I would never go through an operation if I know that I'm incapable of performing it. And like you said earlier, we're already short handed. I don't want to be a reason why we can't accommodate to our patients' needs" I said. The Chief just looked at me for a moment and sighed.
Then, he nodded.
"Okay. I trust you, Dr. Ellis" he said.
I smiled a little and lightly bowed my head to the chief.
"Thank you" I said.
I went to my patient frokm earlier and prepared for surgery.
"Dr. Ellis, are you okay?" a nurse asked me.
"I'm fine" I said and gave her an assuring smile.
2 residents came to me.
"Dr. Ellis, we're ready to assist for you" I said and looked at both of them.
The resident from earlier who was assisting me was here but the other one is new.
I looked at the newly assigned resident to me.
"Dr. Williams and the Chief told me to assist in your surgery, Dr. Ellis" he said
I nodded.
"Get ready. The surgery is in 5" I said.
The residents nodded and the patient was transferred to the surgery room and I followed.
The nurses and residents were already preparing and I prepped after they did.
I looked at the patient in the stretcher inside the surgery room as I washed my hands.
I closed my eyes and took deep calming breaths.
I checked on myself and set my mind oj the surgery.
I need to focus.
I can't mess this up.
A person's life is in danger.
I don't have time to get my personal feelings involved.
I'm at work. My mind should be focused on work.
So I finished preparing and left my personal feelings behind the glass window of the operating room.
I walked inside as everyone waited for me.
I glanced at the people in the operating room with me.
"Let's... save this patient's life" I said.
Then, we started the surgery.
The surgery took about 2 hours and luckily, we didn't experience too many complications that could put the patient in danger.
I closed up the patient and once we were all done, he was transferred to the ICU.
I stood in the middle of the surgery room with my hands still up and my gloves filled with blood.
I was the only one left in the room.
I closed my eyes and took somw breaths.
I did well. That's all that matters.
I'll still need to continuously monitor the patient but I know he'll make full recovery.
I finally got out of the surgery room to meet the patients' family
I met them in the waiting room and told them how the surgery.
"We will have to monitor the patient for the mean time but I believe he will make a full recovery" I said.
They shed tears and thanked me and I excused myself as they had their moment.
I huffed and instead of going to the desk or anywhere else, I made my way to the rooftop.
I needed to clear my head a bit more before I check on my patients again and then go home.
I don't need to worry Ma.
I took out my mini notepad from my pocket and I opened it to the middle page.
Inside was Reeva's ultrasound.
I held it in my hand and I bit my lower lip as tears streamed down my face.
I held onto the rooftop railings as I quietly sobbed alone as the sun set.
I stayed there for about half an hour and cried half the time.
Then, I composed myself.
I kissed Reeva's ultrasound and then put it back in my notepad then went back down the hospital.
I went to the desk and got my patients' records again.
"Dr. Ellis, have you met with Dr. Williams yet?" a nurse asked.
"Since the surgery I performed ended?" I asked.
The nurse nodded.
"No, I haven't. Why?" I asked.
"Well, he seems to be looking for you for a while now. Maybe 20 minutes ago? We thought you went home already since your shift ended. He might have went out to go to your house" she said. I sighed.
"I still have to check on my patients so I guess I'll try to message him later" I said.
The nurse nodded.
I walked away and took the elevator to the in-patient floor and I checked on my patients as usual.
Lastly, I checked on the patient I operated on in the ICU.
I had assigned someone who was on shift to check on him overnight.
I would do it myself but I didn't want Ma to spend the night alone.
I've already left her with Callie for the weekend, I don't think she'll be happy if I spend another night at work.
Once I was all done, I went to my locker room and put my stuff back then changed into my clothes earlier.
I brought my used scrubs with me so I could wash it when I get home.
I grabbed my things and was about to head out when the door burst open and Calum came in.
"Dr. Williams" I said.
Calum bit his lower lip then his jaw clenched as he looked at me.
"Where were you?" he said.
"Me? After I finished they surgery, I went to the rooftop for some air. Why? Did you need me for anything?" I asked.
"Are you mad at me?" he suddenly asked.
I sighed.
Then, I looked at him seriously.
"No. But you should be with me" I said.
Calum just stood there for a moment then he walked over to me and hugged.
"Ghad, Soleil" he muttered under his breath.
I closed my eyes as I hugged him back.
"I'm sorry" I muttered.
"I was just worried about you. You know that I would never doubt you or let alone think you'll put your patients in danger" he said.
"I was worried about you. You were pushing yourself too hard" he added.
I hugged Calum tighter.
"I know. I'm sorry" I said and Calum sighed.
Then, we stayed like that for a few moments.
End of Flashback...
"Hey" Calum suddenly came.
"Hi, Dr. Williams" I greeted him.
Calum smiled.
"Are you done with your rounds?" he asked.
I nodded.
"Then, let's get some lunch" he said.
"Give me a moment" I said and he nodded as he waited beside me.
I finished doing what I was doing and returned the records to the desk.
"Let's go?" he said and I nodded.
Calum and I made our way to the cafeteria.
We have a 36 hour shift today and we definitely needed to fill our stomach.
Ma is staying with her friend; the same one I dropped her off to a week before since they're 'having a sleepover'.
Calum and I actually had dinner with her and her friend after my work a week ago.
Calum was with me because he was still worried after what happened that day.
We reached the cafeteria and since it was lunch time, there were quite a few hospital staff.
"I'll get us our food. You can just go sit down" Calum said and I nodded to secure our seat.
I sat down and took my phone fron my pocket to text Ma.
To: My Ma
Ma, did you eat lunch yet? I'm having mine now. Don't skip meals and always hydrate yourself.
I sent it and put my phone down waiting for a reply.
"Dr. Ellis"
I didn't dare to turn around at the familiar voice.
Then, she came to Calum and I's table and I glanced at her once.
"Yes?" I said.
She scoffed at me.
"How have you been? It's been a while" she said.
Why is she even here talking to me?
"Fine" I simply answered as I met her eyes.
Her jaw clenched annoyed at me.
"I just got back from a work trip but I've heard what happened a week ago. Are you feeling better?" she asked.
I looked at her and slightly tilted my head to the side.
"Can't you just get to the chase already? What are you trying to pull by approaching me like this?" I said.
"Dr. Gacy" Calum came.
His ex, 'Dr. Gacy' tilted her head to look at him.
"Calum" she said in a flirtatious tone that disgusted me.
Cal didn't look too happy either as he got to us and put our tray down.
"What are you doing?" Calum asked annoyed.
"I was just checking up on Dr. Ellis" she said batting her eyelashes at him.
"She's fine. Can you leave us alone to eat? We still need to get back to work and don't have much time to waste" he said.
She was stunned at what Calum said and then faked a smile.
"Of course" she said and glanced at me to glare at me then walked away.
Calum sighed.
"Sorry about that" he said.
I nodded as I took my food.
"It's fine. It's nothing I haven't dealt with" I said with a shrug and Cal chuckled.
We ate together and talked a bit making the best out of the very little free time we haf during our shift.
"How's Ma? Did you check on her?" he asked.
I nodded.
"Yeah. She just hasn't replied yet" I told him and he nodded.
"She must be busy having fun then" he said raising his brows up and down.
We both laughed.
"I really hope she is. I want her to enjoy every day of her life. I really do. She deserves it after everything she's been through" I said and Calum smiled.
"You deserve to enjoy your life too. You know that, right?" he said.
"I do. I enjoy the life that I have now. I'm happy and contented with it" I said.
Calum smiled again.
"I'm glad" he said and I smiled.
Then, my beeper suddenly went off.
My brows furrowed as I looked at it.
"Dr. Ellis!" a resident came rushing to us.
"What is it?" I said standing up.
"There's a patient who came in with several injuries. He refuses to get treatment from other doctors. He's personally requesting you to treat him" she said.
What?
Calum and I glanced at each other and I sighed.
"Finish your food. I'm going" I said.
"I'll come with you" Calum insisted.
I shook my head.
"Come when you finish eating" I said sternly and I left in a rush to get to the patient.
Why would someone refuse treatment and personally request for me?
What was the reason?
We got in the elevator and proceeded to go to the emergency room.
Then, the resident led me to the patient.
"The patient is inside" she said and pointed to the closed curtain.
I nodded and walked over to the closed curtain and opened.
Then, I met eyes with him.
My eyes widened in shock as he looked back at me.
What is he doing here?
He shouldn't be here.
What's happening?
"Hello, Dr. Ellis" he said with a smirk on his face as blood dripped down from his forehead.
My brows furrowed.
Luke.
