To Be Yours Again novel (Alec and Jenny) -
Chapter 999 I Feel More at Ease
Jenny lowered her eyes. She truly had no idea about the existence of such henchmen in the Walters. However, she didn't think too much about it. Either Graham had not entrusted her because he thought she wasn't capable of handling them yet, or he thought it was better for him to retain control over them for the time being.
"Do you think Zeke was the one behind everything this time?" Jenny asked Alec, eager to replace out the identity of the culprit behind the scenes.
Alec pondered for a moment, then shook his head. "I don't think so."
"Why are you so sure?" Jenny looked at him, surprised at how he'd swiftly come to that conclusion without any hesitance.
Now, it was Jenny's turn to be silent. Although she felt it was unlikely that Zeke was the mastermind, she couldn't think of anyone else besides him.
Seeing Jenny racking her brain over the matter, Alec got up and leaned her back against the hospital bed. "Rest well. I'll investigate this matter. Although those people are dead, we can still replace out their identities and get some clues."
Jenny murmured in agreement, not saying anything else. She needed to get well soon, as there were many things she needed to handle personally. Thinking of that, she closed her eyes to sleep but opened them again the next moment.
"You can go back now. I'm fine, so you don't need to stay here and watch over me."
Alec had as much to do as she did, and she felt guilty that he'd been staying with her all night. Smiling and shaking his head, Alec insisted on staying. "I feel more at ease watching over you."
"Alec-"
"Go to sleep. There's a couch over there. I'll sleep for a while after you fall asleep," Alec said.
Since Alec was so insistent, Jenny had no choice but to give up on persuading him to go back. She was well aware that she couldn't make Alec change his mind.
With that, she closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep. After Jenny was sound asleep, Alec quietly left the ward and sat on the bench outside the door, dialing a number on his phone.
"Look into this. I want to know who these people are." If Jenny were awake at that moment, she would be surprised by Alec's cold and harsh tone. After all, she hadn't seen this side of him in a long time.
The next morning, Jenny woke up very early. She was already feeling much better and felt that she could be discharged from the hospital. However, since Evan was still in the ICU, she wasn't in a rush to leave. She still needed to wait for him to wake up. Whether she was a patient or a doctor while doing that didn't make much of a difference.
Just then, Alec came in with breakfast. "It's good that you're awake. Come and have some food."
"Thank you," Jenny thanked him graciously.
"Jenny, you don't have to be so formal with me." Although Alec had reminded her countless times, Jenny still found it hard to completely forego all forms of courtesy when conversing with him. She felt a little embarrassed and apologized, "Sorry, it just came out that way naturally."
"It's okay. Just be mindful next time." Alec hoped Jenny could treat him like family; there was no need to be so distant when interacting with a family member.
As Jenny ate her breakfast, she couldn't help but wonder when Evan would wake up.
Just then, there was a knock on the door of her ward. Vincent walked in and announced, "Mr. Faust and Miss Walter, Mr. Clarke has woken up."
Upon hearing that, Jenny forgot about her breakfast and immediately got up to head toward the intensive care unit.
Alec, on the other hand, had a long face that gave off a hint of gloominess.
"Mr. Faust?" Vincent called out to him, feeling a little nervous when he saw that he hadn't moved from his seat.
Taking a deep breath, Alec kept his emotions in check. He consoled himself that it was normal for Jenny to care about Evan more right now, as he was her savior. Despite having comforted and mentally prepared himself, Alec couldn't help but feel jealous when he saw Jenny sitting by Evan's bedside and patiently comforting him.
