True Fated Marriage (Grace and Heinz) -
Chapter 1889
Grace asked, "Gary, when will you and Celeste be back home?"
Gary was sharp and could right away tell that something was off from Grace's question.
"Mom, what's the matter? Just say it," Gary said.
"Here's the thing. Did you run into Sylvia and Mr. Trevnino today?" Grace asked, as if she was testing the water.
Gary was surprised.
He suddenly realized something and asked, "Mom, did Heinz send someone to keep an eye on Sylvia?"
Grace felt a little embarrassed. She didn't know what to say in reply.
"Well, yeah, your dad is feeling uneasy to leave Sylvia on her own," Grace explained.
"I knew it." Gary burst into laughter. "I think it's one thing to worry about Sylvia, but his real concern is with Kendrix, isn't it?"
"What did you tell Kendrix when you saw him?"
Grace asked.
Before Gary could say anything, Heinz took the phone away from Grace and interrupted, "Gary, it's me. I know you met Kendrix today. What did you tell him? Is he having any ulterior motives towards Sylvia?" "What do you mean by ulterior motives?" Gary couldn't hold back his laughter as he asked him back.
"Stop trying to fool me. Your sister is still a minor. You should be responsible and watch out for her as her brother," Heinz started nagging. "You must know that as the eldest brother, you are just like a dad to her as well."
Gary was convinced. "I agree with you, and that's exactly why I approached Kendrix. I did what an elder brother should do and I was responsible for Sylvia."
"What did you tell him then?" Heinz sounded impatient while he asked.
"Nothing. I just casually greeted him." Gary didn't want to bring up their exact conversation. He knew Heinz would make a big fuss about it.
After all, it was an open secret on how much Heinz adored Sylvia.
Gary didn't want to bring trouble upon himself.
On top of that, he was at the movies with Celeste then.
"How am I supposed to believe that it was just a mere greeting? Your conversation lasted for half an hour. You both stood there and talked for a very long time." Heinz refuted. "Since you already found out this much, why are you asking me for more then?" Gary laughed. "I won't tell you the details, but be rest assured, Kendrix is a decent man."
"Why do you replace him decent?" Heinz was even more anxious. "From where do you see that he's a decent guy?"
"Through our conversation, of course," Gary said, "You should stop trying to interfere with Sylvia's life. They are the younger generation, and you should be still and just let her do whatever she likes as long as she doesn't cross the line."
"You are being an irresponsible elder brother," Heinz scolded.
"You should take the responsibility and ask Kendrix yourself then." Gary wasn't bothered.
"What's wrong with you? That's your sister." Seeing that Gary was going to disregard his request, Heinz tried to persuade further.
"I've told you there's nothing to worry about. Yet, you're refusing to trust me. What can I do then?" Gary said.
"Give me the phone." Grace took the phone and said, "Gary, well talk about it again after your movie."
Hearing what she said, Gary replied, "Mom, if you want my advice, don't bother Kendrix about this. He knows his place."
After a short pause, Grace laughed. "It doesn't sound like you to be praising someone else. It seems like you do like Kendrix."
Gary nodded and said, "I do. I only praise those who I admire. Kendrix is one of them."
Heinz frowned. What did Gary mean?
Did he say he liked Kendrix?
Heinz wanted to ask Gary to come back sooner, but Grace cut off the conversation by saying, "All right then, have fun with Celeste. You don't have to rush back home."
After that, she hung up the phone without giving Heinz the chance to say anything.
Heinz was mad at that. "Ask him to come home soon. I want to know exactly what happened. How can you ask him to have fun out there at times like this? He's not a little boy anymore!" Grace ignored his protest.
Heinz had no choice but to wait.
He waited up until 9 p.m. and until he couldn't wait any longer. He was about to head out and go look for Kendrix and Sylvia.
Grace stopped him again.
"You can't leave," Grace said.
"I can't wait any longer." Heinz insisted.
At that moment, Gary and Celeste arrived back at home.
They saw Grace wrapping her arms around Heinz whereas Heinz was insisting on leaving the house.
Gary immediately frowned. "What are you doing? How can you let mom stop you from leaving when she's still pregnant? You're not a young man anymore. Don't you feel bad about this?"
Heinz was startled. Panic was written all over his face. He turned around and saw Gary. He said in an upset tone, "You are one to say all these. If you came back earlier, I wouldn't be wanting to leave in a hurry like this."
"Is this still about Sylvia?" Gary asked. He and Celeste walked up to them and helped Grace to the sofa.
"Yes, it is," Heinz replied.
"What about Sylvia?" Gary asked.
"The thing with Kendrix. You didn't even explain clear enough earlier," Heinz said.
"Not clear enough? How's that so? I remember I've told you everything." Gary swept a glance at Heinz. "I remember telling you clearly that I replace Kendrix to be a decent guy."
"But how? Your words are too vague. What about him is decent?" Heinz couldn't be patient and continued to question.
"He's just a decent guy inside and out," Gary said.
Celeste knew that Gary's attitude would only drive Heinz to be more anxious about it. Hence, she interrupted, "Gary, just give him the details already. This is not helping the situation." Gary glanced at Celeste and said, "There's nothing for him to worry about. It's obvious, isn't it? Sylvia's all over Kendrix but he isn't exactly returning her feelings."
Celeste felt awkward and couldn't bring herself to speak.
Sylvia did look like she was taking the initiative to approach Kendrix.
Celeste wasn't good at lying, so she couldn't deny what Gary said.
Heinz naturally took in Celeste's reaction and realized that it was the truth. He grew even more anxious.
"Celeste, is that true? Is Sylvia the one who was taking the initiative?" Heinz questioned.
Celeste immediately panicked. She raised her head and met Heinz's sharp gaze.
She pursed her lips and said, "Actually, I don't think it sounds that bad. I believe Sylvia just admires Mr. Trevino for his charisma. He is indeed a very charming teacher. I don't think it is a bad thing." "I have to disagree." Heinz frowned again.
"Mom, Celeste, now you see it, don't you? Heinz is obviously the only one in our family who's protective and obsessed with Sylvia. Everyone else avoids her as if she's a ticking bomb." Heinz was startled. "How is she a ticking bomb?"
"They're pretty much the same thing. Now that we're the only ones at home, let's just be honest with each other. Everyone else except you is dodging Sylvia," Gary continued, "Ernest, Sebastian, Lowell, mom, Celeste, and I. Even Leah is avoiding her too."
Heinz was at a loss for words and looked a little embarrassed.
Gary sighed. "Thus, don't try to judge others with your own standards. You are the only one who views Sylvia as the apple of your eyes. Kendrix doesn't give a d*mn about Sylvia, unlike you. He even asked me to send her back to school, but Sylvia refused and was about to cry. I couldn't bear to see her cry, and that's why I had a talk with
Kendrix and asked him to send her back instead."
Heinz was surprised.
Celeste also said, "He's right. Mr. Trevino left with Sylvia after his conversation with Gary. He didn't refuse it anymore. Sylvia was the one who insisted to tag along to the bookstore in the first place." Grace was listening to what they said. If Celeste was also saying the same thing, that would be the truth. Grace could only sigh. "It seems like our daughter is developing a one-sided infatuation in this situation."
Celeste and Gary glanced at Grace simultaneously.
She sighed again. "Anyway, she will have to face the harsh reality sooner or later."
Gary's eyes flickered. He didn't tell Grace what he saw, as he decided to hide the truth from Heinz. He saw how overly protective Heinz was towards Sylvia. If he told Heinz the truth, he would only be making the situation worse.
Gary wasn't stupid, so he would never want to see that happening.
"How can you talk about our daughter like this?" Heinz glanced at Grace. "I think I should just go to her school." "Sure, go ahead. Go make a huge fuss out of this and embarrass Sylvia and yourself. It's your decision to make anyway, and it has nothing to do with us."
