True Love
Chapter 18

-You’re awake at last! You’re such a sleepyhead. She hears her sister’s voice close to her, she turns her body a little so she can see her.

-Hello. How long did I sleep?

-The truth is that you didn’t move at all. I was worried that you wouldn’t wake up to drink water.

-Now I want some water. -What’s that smell? Are you cooking?

-Yes, it’s nightfall. -We should have some dinner.

-Where did you get the food? -Where’s Ethan?

-You handsome boy! He left, he said he’ll be back later. He brought food and stuff, he’s good people.

-Are you best friends already? And he’s not my boy.

-Well it looks like you’re his girl, he likes you. And yeah, I like him a lot.

Although I don’t quite trust him, I replace it strange that he lives here and walks around naked.

Eve was a girl who distrusted and at the same time trusted a person. If she liked Ethan it was a good thing. Maybe she saw something reassuring in the young man, or maybe it was just gratitude that he was helping them.

If the boy was strange, why did he appear in the middle of nowhere naked, or did he live in the woods? He himself had said there were wild wolves around, and yet he left them alone without protection.

He thought he was just making it up so they wouldn’t go exploring or escape. But in their condition it was more than impossible for him to do so, not that they had many places to go. They could no longer return to the village; at that time of night their father would surely be more than desperate to replace them, for fear that Daren would make him pay for his carelessness.

She felt sorry for him, but he deserved it for never protecting her as the father he should have been to them.

-He would have his reasons,

-It didn’t bother you to see him like that.

-What are you talking about?

-I saw you, I know you were drooling when you saw him.

-I’m hungry. -What did you do?

-Don’t try to avoid the subject. Said the young woman stirring something in a small pot. -I made stew.

-It smells so good, I’m so hungry. And I need to go to the bathroom.

-This is difficult, your boy has asked me not to leave the house until he comes back.

-And when will that be? I don’t think I’ll last long.

-I don’t know, he’s long gone.

F**k! He wasn’t going to hold out for long. It was freezing cold even though there was a fire inside, and the urge was enormous. He sat up in bed, it was a really horrible mattress, dirty, stained and old.

They would have to make do while they were there. He rubbed his face trying to wake up, his head didn’t hurt so much anymore, with a good bath and good food he would be better and above all he would think better. She saw that on one side of the bed there were girls’ clothes and bedding, she sighed in relief that she could dress the bed properly.

It looked like they would be staying there, maybe Ethan’s crazy idea of taking them to his house had gone, not that he thought it was crazy, but, for heaven’s sake! They didn’t know him at all. Just because he was helping them at the moment didn’t mean he didn’t have bad intentions towards them.

The smell of food mingled with the smell of burning wood, damp, forest and again there was that “wet dog” smell – hell, it was driving her crazy.

-Eve, I need to go to the bathroom urgently.

-Okay, but you’ll have to do it at the door.

-I don’t care. It’s freezing.

-Your boy brought us some more women’s clothes. -Where do you think he got them?

-I think he has a sister.

The girls opened the door and a blast of cold air hit them in the face, to their surprise it was snowing. Almost everything was already covered in snow, white flakes fell on Shery’s brown hair. Her breath was totally white, it was freezing cold in those mountains.

She looked all around, the white blanket on the ground together with the darkness of the night made for a rather gloomy landscape, you couldn’t see much of anything. He finished with his needs, and before entering they heard some noises very close. The fear was great so they didn’t wait any longer and locked the door.

They could hear footsteps outside, surrounding the small house. There was no window to see who it was, so they were at a disadvantage. Shery walked up to the door and put her ear to it, listening for sounds, but couldn’t identify anything. She wanted Ethan to be there with them, she felt safer with him around and she didn’t understand why.

-What do you think it is? Wolves? Eve asked terrified.

-Shh…” She said pointing her finger to her lips.

He continued listening carefully, until he heard as if someone was sniffing at the door. She had peed there, she had left her human smell. That was not good, not good at all. It was definitely an animal on the other side of the door and it was sniffing very insistently.

She could feel it on the door, how it smelled through the cracks, she couldn’t see anything. It was a thick solid wooden door, almost impossible for a wolf to knock down but she wasn’t sure anymore. Then she heard another sniff join her.

She backed up. It was several wolves outside. She put both hands on the wood without making a sound, she was trying to put weight on it in case those animals tried to throw her. She looked at her sister who was in the corner, obviously frightened. She said with a twitch of her lips, “It’ll be all right,” and smiled at him. If there were too many wolves Ethan would not be able to do anything, rather he would be in danger.

They stayed like that for about half an hour, listening as they moved around the cabin looking for a way in, but even though it was a small old house it was well built, both the roof and the walls were made of a very thick and sturdy type of wood.

It was well built, and moss had been inserted in the gaps between each log of wood to keep the heat in and to keep out the vermin. After the agony of kneeling for all that time holding the door and listening, I finally stopped hearing noises. At last she stopped hearing noises, it seemed they had gone, or at least moved away.

Maybe they were waiting for one of them to come out and attack, but that wasn’t going to happen. They would be locked up there for days if that was the case. Ethan was right, it was dangerous in those woods for the two of them. They weren’t going to survive long in that cabin surrounded by so many wild animals.

A small group of people were marching at a slow pace, among them was Alpha Marcus Dallas and his Beta Seus. The road to the Blue Moon territories was long, and at the rate they were going it would be even longer.

It was a nightmare to deal with these people, they were so suspicious, they wouldn’t take orders, all they did was look at Daysi even when they didn’t accept her as their Alpha. She had a difficult task ahead of her, she already had enough with a puppy at home that she was still raising.

And a son to whom he still had to instill duties. And not only that, he was the next Alpha in a few years and he was more interested in replaceing his mate than anything else in the world.

I could understand that perfectly and even more so when his rut was approaching. But he had to make the boy understand that everything had its time. Not that he was the type of father to arrange marriages of convenience, but when he saw young Deysi he thought that perhaps he could match his son with her.

Perhaps the two would understand each other well enough to make peace between the two packs and bring about a union favourable to all. Yes she was a bit indomitable, but she assumed her son could handle such a she-wolf of his kind. In the end they were both Alphas, they could be great leaders. But after all, her son would be the one to make the decision in all of this.

The last thing he wanted was to force him to do something he didn’t want to do. But if he noticed any chemistry between the two, he wouldn’t hesitate to bring them together. A crossover between the two packs would be the most convenient in these times of unrest and separation.

He looked over his shoulder and saw the girl walking, all upright and with her forehead held high. As white as a sheet of paper, with her silver hair and those blue eyes as big as the full moon. He couldn’t believe how beautiful she was, even her eyebrows and eyelashes were white.

The difference between them was enormous. But they were still wolves. She felt his gaze and looked at him without a hint of dissimulation.

-Is something wrong? she said nonchalantly.

-I wondered why those wolves would attack your lands. Was there something special I wasn’t aware of? I ask to disguise my earlier thoughts.

-I don’t know. But my village knows a little of the history of those damned wolves.

-I assume that being the Alpha’s daughter you are aware of everything.

-Of course! My father told me everything.

-Then you have my full attention, let’s take advantage of the fact that there’s still a long way to go.
