Twisting Her Fate -
Chapter 62
In the half moon pack, Gabriel looks at the time once again, huffing in annoyance. He has had a gloomy look on his face since the moment he arrived back from the incident on the twentieth floor.
His solemn mask is nothing compared to the seething fury he feels on the inside. He feels like all he can see is his load emptying on the bedspread like that in front of so many eyes.
His lifes greatest embarrassment replayed over and over before his eyes.
He hasn't even bothered to replace his phone yet.
The time for the start of the ball has already passed and still Maggie is not even down. Gabriel shifts in his suit uncomfortably, not that he is usually a stickler for being on time, but the fact that Maggie is making him wait is what is annoying him to no end.
The untouched glass of bourbon on the table just mocks him, the ice has turned to water, diluting the amber liquid. Gabriel just watches the drops of condensation run down the glass, thinking about everything that has happened in the last few weeks, how his seemingly perfect life is starting to unravel before his eyes and there is nothing he can do but helplessly watch. Gabriel just wants to throw the whole glass across the room, but he is trying to be on his best behaviour.
Maggie has been getting ready for the entire day. She has spent a small fortune on beauty treatments. Her dress cost enough to feed a starving nation. Her bag is about the same.
Her shoes cost as much as feeding the entire pack for two months, but Maggie doesn't care about any of that as she looks in the mirror doing a little twirl for herself with a satisfied smile. She looks amazing. She has never looked better. Connor is going to regret all his life choices in front of her. Gabriel will forgive all past sins and worship her like she deserves to be worshiped.
Gabriel looks up the stairs as finally, the makeup artists and hairdresser comes down. Sighing relief because it means that Maggie shouldn't be too far behind them.
Jameson has already left to be there to represent the half moon pack from the start of the event, so at least the pack is not unrepresented.
Maggie descends the stairs looking as pretty as a picture. Her sleek red dress hugs her curves. Her br*asts showing the perfect amount of cleavage, neither too much nor too little. She has black stilettos, fiery red lips, her dyed blonde hair is in loose waves around her shoulders, she looks elegant yet seductive.
Gabriel looks at her. If nothing else, at least Maggie does have good looks.
But it doesn't comment at all. He just stands up from the couch with a scowl on his face.
"About time"
Maggie is used to his indifference and she only hears what she wants to hear.
"You know that all this perfection takes time"
"At the rate you are going, we will miss the entire thing"
Lance came and saw Gabriel during the day, telling him how important it was to make a good impression at the ball. With the pack going the way it is going, the lack of confidence in both Gabriel and Maggie. Lance wanted Gabriel to take the opportunity to strengthen ties between packs and foster confidence within the half moon pack itself. He even warned Gabriel to make sure that Maggie is on a tight leash, not wanting any embarrassment with her running to Alpha Storm.
If she makes any move like that, the entire pack will be embarrassed in front of all the people that they never want to show weakness to.
Lance even went on to say that he doesn't approve of Maggie, but since Gabriel has made his choice they need to appear as a united front, not just within the pack. But outside of that, Maggie needs to make sure that she is doing all the right things and appearing not as stupid and selfish as she really is. She needs to act well so that others have faith in the leadership of the half moon pack. That Gabriel isn't allowed to single-handedly take down the pack that has been thriving through many generations.
All that topped onto Gabriel's already incredibly bad mood made him just want to lash out. Usually, to vent his emotions he f*cks but with what happened yesterday, he is too scared to try.
Maggie is too busy admiring herself on shiny surfaces to notice anything wrong with Gabriel, having no idea that he is about one step away from breaking point, the man looks so handsome on the outside that it is hard to know the rate that he is falling apart on the inside.
At the alpha ball, Jameson sits in the corner spotting Alpha Storm without much issue, as he watches the alpha and his date move swiftly and gracefully over the dance floor, Connor looking at his date so tenderly.
Even a blind man can see that there are feelings there. Jameson can't help but chuckle to himself at the fact that Connor didn't just make do after Maggie, he actually upgraded significantly without incidence. He feels that Connor dodged a massive bullet by Maggie not wanting to be with him.
But Jameson is slightly surprised at the fact that it was not long ago that the elite squad was coming to sort out the issues between the packs and now suddenly there is a girl who looks like she belongs right by his side. For all the handsome that Connor is, the girl is just as beautiful. They move with perfect time, having a deep tacit understanding between them.
They have attracted all eyes in the place at some stage of the night at least.
In a world full of beauty and power, somehow the two just radiate together.
Jameson can't wait for the good show it's going to be when his Alpha and supposed Luna arrive. He can't wait for Gabriel to see that Connor did not lose in the deal at all and if Gabriel has any sense of achievement over Connor, he should reevaluate. But what he is looking forward to the most is Maggie seeing that her fated mate did so much better than her and the joke of the story is that she is the one that rejected him at the start. It is hilarious and delivers swift justice.
This night is set to be a lot more interesting than he was anticipating.
There is another set of eyes on the couple, but this time not on the couple as a whole. This set of eyes is purely focused on the girl, to the point where he is not sure whether he has blinked or not in all this time. Time he no longer has a concept of, not knowing if he has been staring at her for minutes or hours.
He can't even hear the chatter around him about the couple as he just stares. Finally, after what feels like an eternity, the couple stop dancing, Connor taking Leilani's hand and leading her towards the bar.
The man follows their movements sticking his hands deep into his pockets as he walks over without caring much about who is in his way. His eyes never leaving Leilani for a single second.
Leilani grabs the glass of water off the bar. Throwing it back quickly before grabbing her whisky, dry and lime and taking a small sip out of a short straw as she leans her back against the bar. Looking out at the crowd sticking close to Connor. "You're an incredibly good dancer"
Connor nods as he raises his own glass to his lips. Looking at the beautiful woman beside him that has a light flush on her pale cheeks, making her even more enchanting than usual. It hasn't escaped his notice that she draws a lot of attention, but never for one moment does she return that attention or make it seem like she is available, even without the mark on her shoulder. He has claimed her as his and she is the same. She doesn't play any games trying to make him jealous or trying to rush the relationship. They're just naturally tied.
"My mum loved dancing and she taught me"
Connor pulls Leilani into his arms as he smiles sadly. Thinking about his mother and all those lessons from years ago that somehow he still remembers perfectly. As soon as his hand hit Leilani's waist, the music took him over and it was like it all rushed straight back to him even though he has not danced with anyone since her death.
Connor, kisses the top of Leilani's head.
"You are not bad yourself"
Leilani laughs, holding Connor tightly. Not wanting him to feel sad about his mother. Hers is hardly as sweet story as Connor's. In their training they learned everything to help them deal with most situations and dancing just happened to be one of them. There was no sweet sentimental meaning. Her only fun memory of the time is the boys fighting over who would dance with her, as when they had to partner with each other they had to have the long battle of who was a girl and who was the man.
That was until Titan started doing it a different way and they had to draw straws. Sometimes, even Leilani became the man. It was completely illogical, but it made a hard task bearable.
Leilani pecks Connor's lips, softly whispering in his ear.
"Luckily you brought me as a date. Otherwise, I think there would have been a lot of fights going on. Even all the mated she wolves are going into heat over you"
"Me? If I wasn't here, I think that the floor would be covered in the blood of men's lunas and dates. The dead bodies would be countless as all the men took a dip at being with you" "I've never heard anyone exaggerate to the level that you manage"
Connor bites her plump bottom lip, that lipstick is driving him insane. It is such a beautiful color on already enticingly beautiful lips.
"You think I'm exaggerating, take a look around and then tell me if I'm exaggerating, see if there is a single set of male eyes that are not on you"
