Michael was floored when he saw the photo on his phone.

Even though he couldn't make out the face of the person in the security uniform, there was only one other person in the whole mall wearing one besides him, and that was Nico. Yep, just two security guards in the entire place-him and Nico.

So, it was clear as day that Nico was the ghost.

Michael remembered the first time he walked into the mall, he caught a whiff of something rotten, like a corpse.

Back then, he saw Nico coming out of the shadows, saying he just got back from the restroom.

'The restroom? If he really went there, how did he not notice Jane hiding?' he thought.

It all started to make sense.

Michael frowned, 'This doesn't add up. If Nico's the ghost, why didn't he attack me when we were in the dorm together? I should've been a target then.'

The odds were high that Nico was the ghost, but there were still some loose ends.

Guessing wouldn't get him anywhere. He needed to dig deeper.

With what he knew about the ghost, he felt ready to handle it.

"Is the ghost gone? Are we safe now?" Jane asked, her voice shaky.

Michael replied, "It's gone. You're safe for now."

"Can you stop pressing against me? And what's that poking me?" Jane, almost squished against the door, asked.

"It's nothing, just a sausage. By the way, weren't you hungry? Still want it?" Michael said.

Jane was taken aback, "Now? Can we talk about this after we get out?"

"If you don't want it, forget it," Michael said.

Jane hesitated, then said, "Okay, but can you hurry up? Don't take too long."

"You're so naggy." Michael turned on the flashlight, lit up the area, and pulled a sausage out of his pocket.

"Here, I bought it this morning. But you're really something, still thinking about food with a ghost around," he said.

Jane was stunned when she saw the sausage in her hand. It really was a sausage.

"Take your time eating, I'm heading out." Michael opened the door and stepped out with the flashlight.

He looked around; it was quiet and calm.

But when he shone the light on a few nearby rooms, he was shocked.

The doors that the ghost had busted open earlier were now perfectly fine.

Yep, the doors were all shut tight, no signs of damage, totally defying logic.

"Dealing with a ghost isn't exactly a science," he muttered to himself.

Michael looked away, not wanting to dwell on the ghost's tricks.

"Where are you going? There's a ghost out there. Why don't you stay here with me until morning?" Jane cautiously stepped out, her hair a mess, clothes disheveled, holding the sausage. Michael said, "I gotta go. Now that I know more about the ghost, I need to replace it. Plus, I'm here to make money. If Mr. Wagner dies, this whole trip's a waste. He's offering a million bucks to solve the mall's haunting." Saying this, he walked out of the restroom with the flashlight.

Jane quickly followed, "If you leave, what about me?"

"Not really my problem, is it? Why don't you stay in the restroom? I'll come get you when it's over, then you can leave," Michael said, glancing back at her.

"No way, what if the ghost comes back while I'm in there? And do you even have a plan to deal with the ghost?" Jane asked.

Michael shrugged, "Not really."

"Then protect me, please," Jane pleaded.

"Why should I protect you? I just met you a few minutes ago. Why would I risk my life for you? I just want to do my own thing," Michael said as he reached the first floor of the mall, shining the flashlight around. Jane clung to his arm, "Then I'll be your girlfriend, is that okay?"

"You don't even know my name and you want to be my girlfriend? You just want me to risk my life for you," Michael said.

"I'm serious, I won't go back on my word," Jane insisted.

Michael shook his head, "I don't trust you, and having you as my girlfriend doesn't benefit me at all. It would just be a hassle and might even get me killed."

He continued searching with the flashlight.

"It won't, I'm smart. I won't be a hassle, trust me," Jane said, almost breaking down inside.

As an accountant, she was considered a white-collar worker and looked decent. Although not tall, she had a good figure and was often pursued. Now, she was being rejected by a security guard.

And even so, Jane had to cling to this security guard. Because she knew, only he could protect her.

"It's here." Michael's flashlight soon illuminated something.

A human head, rotten, emitting a foul odor.

It was Emily's head, which had been here all along, unmoved.

Michael thought, 'The ghost Jane saw was Emily, and I captured Nico's ghost. She had no reason to lie, and I couldn't have taken the wrong picture. The only possibility is that the ghost can change identities? Emily, Nico, even Leila, or other employees.'

'Anyone could be the ghost,' Michael frowned deeply.

Then he said to himself, 'No, now I should consider Mr. Wagner, Lucas, Mr. Rossi, and the others. They've been here for a while. To truly replace out who the ghost is, I just need to go to one place. The surveillance room."

Everything that happened in the past few days must have been captured on surveillance. As long as he retrieved the footage, everything would be clear.

"Jane, do you know where the surveillance room is?" Michael asked.

"On the fifth floor," Jane said.

Michael nodded, "Take me there and I promise you'll leave here alive."

"Really?" Jane said, a bit surprised.

"Of course, but you have to listen to me. Do whatever I say. If you run around in fear, I won't be responsible if you die," Michael said seriously.

"I promise to listen to you," Jane said immediately.

Michael said, "I hope you keep your word, not for me, but for yourself. Now, let's head to the fifth floor."

He looked up; the upper floors were dimly lit but still visible, much better than the situation downstairs. But there was no movement upstairs.

He didn't know what had happened to Mr. Wagner, Mr. Rossi, and the Ghost Handler Ethan.

Maybe they escaped, or maybe they were dead.

But he had to check. If they were dead, he had no reason to stay here.
