Ultimate Evolution I Became the Master of the World -
Chapter 48 Surveillance Room
In a tucked-away utility room inside the mall, a few phone lights flickered on, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Everyone inside was holding their breath, faces pale and eyes wide with terror. There was Mr. Wagner, Mr. Rossi, Lucas, Leila, and a few others. But the one who stood out the most was Ethan.
Ethan's face was dead serious as he stared at the door smeared with scarlet blood. The blood had dried but still looked fresh, like it was seeping out from the door itself.
A puddle of blood had formed on the ground.
"The noise stopped. Looks like that ghost can't get in for now," Ethan sighed, glancing at his blood-covered hands, his expression grim.
"Are we safe now?" Mr. Wagner asked, his voice shaking.
They had made it to the fifth floor without much trouble, planning to escape through the emergency exit. But when they got there, they found all the doors locked.
They thought about breaking the locks, but just as they were about to, something creepy happened.
Someone behind them suddenly dropped to the ground, headless.
Panicked, they ditched the idea of breaking the locks and scattered. Luckily, they ran into Ethan, who led them into this utility room and shut the door, barely escaping the danger. But things didn't calm down.
Just a moment ago, there were loud bangs on the door, like something was trying to break in, even damaging the lock.
That kind of strength wasn't human.
The others watched as Ethan smeared his bleeding hands on the door, and the noise finally stopped.
"This won't last long. That ghost knows we're here and it's not giving up. I can feel it waiting outside," Ethan said.
His situation was just like what Michael had faced before, but he still didn't know what kind of ghost they were dealing with.
"So what do we do now? Are we gonna die?" Lucas asked, his voice trembling.
Ethan snorted, "If you die, you won't be the only one. What are you scared of? I told you not to trust that scammer."
He glanced at the corner where Mr. Rossi, who had been so confident before, was now trembling, looking anything but arrogant.
"We need to replace a way out! We can't just stay here. I'll pay whatever it takes," Mr. Wagner said anxiously.
The longer they stayed, the more dangerous it felt. They had to get out of the mall to be safe.
"Shut up! Is money really important right now?" Ethan snapped, clearly frustrated.
He didn't have a good solution either. The ghost in this mall was tougher than he had expected, and he was reaching his limit as a Ghost Handler.
While they were all at a loss, Michael was calmly walking up the stairs with a flashlight.
"Aren't you scared?" Jane asked, clinging to his sleeve, her neck shrinking as she nervously looked around, afraid a ghost might pop out from some dark corner.
"Of course I'm scared, but does being scared help?" Michael said casually. "Does being scared mean you won't die? The more you fear when facing a ghost, the more likely you are to die. You were lucky to hide in the restroom for four days without getting attacked."
"But to survive, luck isn't enough. You need to take action," Michael added.
They reached the fifth floor. It was eerily quiet, with no noise at all.
Michael shone his flashlight around but found no one there.
He only saw a head at the entrance of the emergency exit.
The face was pale, eyes closed, and the neck looked broken, with no blood flowing out. If it weren't for the lack of a body, the head would look like it was peacefully sleeping.
"That's one of Mr. Rossi's group," Michael's expression changed slightly. "But he was killed by a ghost."
Jane looked at the head, covering her mouth in fear to stop herself from screaming.
Michael had warned her not to scream no matter what she saw.
"Where's the surveillance room?" Michael asked.
"Over there," Jane pointed ahead.
Michael followed her direction and quickly reached the surveillance room.
The surveillance room door was open, with a bunch of keys in the lock and the lights were on inside, as if someone had gone in.
"Wasn't there a power outage? Why are the lights still on?" Jane asked in surprise.
Michael's eyes narrowed. "It's not a power outage, someone deliberately turned off the mall's lights. Normally, a mall wouldn't have a power outage. If it were a real power outage, I wouldn't have come to the surveillance room." But when he walked in, he was stunned.
In front of the control panel, a person sat there, body stiff, not moving.
The person was wearing a security uniform.
And there were some water stains beside the seat, as if his pants were wet, like he had just come from the restroom.
"It's a colleague." Jane hadn't seen the photo in Michael's phone, instinctively calling out.
The person turned around upon hearing the voice and replied, "Michael, why are you here?"
"Nico." Michael's face darkened.
He still had the photo of the security uniform taken in the restroom on his phone.
And in the entire mall, besides Nico and himself, there was no third person wearing a security uniform.
"Great, you know each other," Jane said with some relief, feeling a bit safer upon replaceing another living person.
"I'm Jane, the company accountant. Nice to meet you," as she intended to walk over, Michael stopped her.
Michael showed her the photo. "Look at this first. This was taken in the restroom earlier."
Jane looked at the photo.
In the dim restroom, a person in a security uniform seemed to be walking out, with only half of his body captured.
Jane looked at the photo, then at Nico, a wave of fear surged through her. She quickly retracted her outstretched hand as if electrocuted, covering her mouth and hiding behind Michael.
"Stand against the wall and don't move," Michael said, pulling her to the wall.
Jane immediately pressed herself against the wall, not daring to move.
This woman was indeed smart, knowing what to do at the right time.
"What's wrong with you guys?" Nico walked over, puzzled.
Michael looked at him and said, "Nothing, the mall is haunted and some people got separated, so we came to the control room to check. By the way, why are you here?"
He spoke to Nico as usual, but in his mind, he had already considered Nico as a ghost.
Nico said, "Haunted? Where? I didn't see anything. I saw the mall's power was out, so I checked the circuits. Seeing the surveillance room lights still on, I came in to take a look. I hadn't been here long when you arrived." "Is that so?" Michael looked at him warily. "Did you see anyone else besides us?"
"No, I didn't replace them," Nico shook his head.
"Really? Can you help me check the previous surveillance footage?" Michael asked.
Nico said, "No problem, I'm good at this."
He sat down and started checking the previous surveillance footage.
Michael walked over and looked at his wet pants. "Did you go to the restroom earlier?"
"No, why?" Nico replied.
"Nothing," Michael said.
