Ultimate Evolution I Became the Master of the World -
Chapter 60 The Arrest
Finding the real ghost among all the weird corpses in the shop? Yeah, that was no walk in the park.
They couldn't just test each one, 'cause using ghost powers was super risky. Every time they did, it shaved off a bit of their own life. When it was go-time, you needed guts and a strong will.
Michael had the guts, and Ethan had the will.
So, instead of bailing, they decided to take action.
Blood oozed from Ethan's hands into the body of a middle-aged woman in a suit.
His blood seemed endless. As it seeped in, the first corpse that moved froze up, and the others just stood there, motionless. This kinda hinted that the real ghost was hiding in this body.
But, was it really?
Michael wasn't sure, and even Ethan had his doubts.
"Is it this one?" Michael asked.
Ethan looked dead serious. "I don't know, but it seems like it. My blood can only hold the ghost down, not ID it."
Michael frowned. Everything around them was dark and eerily quiet.
Except for the blood still seeping from the corpse Ethan was holding, nothing else was happening.
It felt like time had stopped.
But this creepy stillness was the worst, 'cause Ethan couldn't tell if the body he was holding was really the ghost. If they kept this up and guessed wrong, Ethan would be a goner. Every second that ticked by was a loss for them.
The real ghost had all the time in the world to wait them out.
"Michael, what now? Think of a way to confirm if this is the ghost. If it is, we'll box it up." Sweat was dripping down Ethan's forehead.
He started feeling like the blood flowing from his hands was getting out of control.
Michael was racking his brain, thinking through all the details.
If this body wasn't the ghost, then the ghost was still hiding somewhere. If the ghost was just chilling, letting Ethan waste his power, it would eventually kill him.
If this body was the ghost, why were the other corpses just standing there?
A decoy! This first-moving body was probably just a decoy.
But if he guessed wrong, they'd miss the perfect chance to catch the ghost.
He weighed his options.
In the end, he went with the more likely scenario.
Michael made a bold guess that this body wasn't the ghost.
He quickly made up his mind and said, "Fall back, give up this chance."
"What? Fall back?"
Ethan couldn't believe Michael was saying that right now.
Falling back meant this attempt would fail, and he'd waste the ghost's power.
"This body can't be the ghost. If it was, the other corpses wouldn't just be standing there, perfectly still. Sometimes, being too perfect is the biggest giveaway. Fall back. If you die from the ghost's revival, things will get out of hand," Michael said, serious and urgent.
"But..." Ethan hesitated, not wanting to take the risk.
"Just fall back," Michael insisted, "You don't have a choice. If you don't, I'm outta here. My Ghost Realm won't hold much longer. If we drag this out, we're both dead." "Damn it, I'll trust you this time." Ethan reluctantly stopped the blood flow from his hands and let go of the body.
"Don't turn your back on these corpses, walk towards me," Michael instructed, his eyes sharp.
"I know." Ethan gave up and started to retreat.
"Slowly," Michael added.
Ethan cautiously backed away.
As he did, the body in the suit, with the middle-aged woman's head, suddenly collapsed to the ground in a weird position. The head rolled off the neck and hit the floor. The body, now soaked in Ethan's blood, lost its creepy vibe and became just another corpse.
But the collapse didn't affect the other corpses.
They still stood there, stiff and motionless, holding an unnatural balance despite their decay.
"Your guess was right, she wasn't the ghost." Ethan was both shocked and pissed.
He'd been tricked by the ghost!
Just as he was about to retreat into the Ghost Realm, one of the corpses moved. Its head spun 180 degrees, eyes snapping open to stare at him, and its arm shot out, grabbing Ethan's arm. With a sickening sound, Ethan's arm was torn off like a doll's, no blood, just crimson flesh.
"Ghost!" Ethan screamed, terrified.
But what happened next was even worse.
The real ghost started to attach Ethan's arm to its own body, like it was assembling a toy.
"Michael, stop it! You can't let it replace my arm. My hand has ghost blood. If it gets it, we're screwed," Ethan shouted, panicking.
He was shaking all over.
Their earlier guess was right. It was a trap.
Both he and Michael were the ghost's targets. It wanted a better body.
Human corpses decayed and became useless, so the ghost kept switching bodies and heads.
But a Ghost Handler's body was different because it had a real ghost inside.
If a ghost harnessed another ghost, its power would skyrocket.
Because ghosts don't die.
Before Ethan could finish speaking, a red light flashed before his eyes.
The ghost in front of him vanished.
His arm fell to the ground.
"Got you. You hid well, but once you're in my Ghost Realm, you can't leave unless I die," Michael said with a cold smile.
Within the Ghost Realm, a corpse stood motionless in front of him, its head still twisted at a 180-degree angle.
But Michael knew the real ghost was in this body.
