Kailee could hear the pain in his voice as he talked even though he was trying to mask it. It was more than hearing it… she could almost feel it. It was like she could feel this deep lonely feeling that wasn’t hers but his. She felt dumb. This is what she wanted. She wanted to have a place where she belonged and to have love, a family. And she was the one holding it away. Would it not be better to give in to this feeling? Even if she ends up hurt in the end at least she would have given it her best.

She turned around and scooted closer to him on the couch. When she found his body she trailed her hands up his chest and then hugged her arms around him, leaning into his chest. She felt his warmth under her fingers, his cedar and honey scent swirled in her nose. She leaned her face into his chest as she enjoyed his sweet scent. Her fingers dug into him slightly as she connected their bodies tighter. She felt his hands snake around her body and embraced her back, completing their connection.

“Trey, I do want this too. I’m sorry my heart is not as far along as yours is but there is no one else I want to give it to. Can we just let things flow naturally between us and see where it takes us?” Kailee whispered softly into him.

“Things coming naturally to me may not be the same as coming naturally to you.” Trey smiled and held her tightly against him. She had no idea how her just telling him she wanted him affected him. “Let it go naturally for you though. I promise I am ready for anything you are ready for.”

She pushed back from his heated body and reached her hands up so that she could touch his face. Her fingers brushed against his cheek, and she used it as a guide as she came closer. She brushed her lips against his and then wrapped her arms around his neck. “Thank you for being considerate of me.” She leaned her forehead into his and closed her eyes. “Could you try to do one more thing for me?”

Trey smiled as he brushed his nose against hers. “What is it?”

“I don’t know what you are doing or planning… but could you please not do anything that could be dangerous?” Kailee felt his shoulders stiffen under her hands. She had a feeling whatever he was doing could be unsafe. She was afraid that she might end up losing him. Already… she could not fool herself; she was afraid of what his loss would feel like.

“What about you jumping into a burning building? Seems to me like you should be taking your own advice.” Trey referred to something else. He could not promise her that. What he was doing was dangerous and risky. Which was why he was taking lots of precautions. It was why he was keeping his identity a secret from most of the world. “Could you please not do anything dangerous?” He said coyishly.

Kailee opened her eyes and blinked in the dark. A soft smile spread over her face. She felt a slight panicky feeling thinking that she might lose Trey. There was nothing she could do but hope he would be okay. So she buried her fear the best she could. She snuggled into his embrace and leaned her head onto his chest, getting comfortable.

“Maybe you should just stay with me all the time to make sure I don’t do anything dangerous.” Kailee smirked and felt his laughing vibrations underneath her.

“That’s why I am cracking down on your guards. The next time you end up in a dangerous situation they are in for it.”

“Speaking of guards, you and Lance grew up together?” Kailee asked casually. She could feel the breath he took in as he then tried to control his breathing again.

“Yes, he mentioned that?” Trey answered quietly.

“He said you were like brothers and that you were his only family. You two must be really close.” Kailee listened to the quiet sigh from Trey.

“We are close. Even though he isn’t a b***d relative, that doesn’t matter to me. I consider him my brother. My little annoying brother who sometimes needs a kick to the pants but a brother none-the-less.” Trey smiled. “Looks like you and Lance are getting close too.”

Kailee grinned. “Well I am with him a lot so I think that is natural.”

“He is a good guy. I trust him. And I trust him with you.”

“Is he the person you trust the most? Out of all your men?” Kailee asked as she swirled her fingertips over his chest.

“I trust them all. But Lance is the one I trust the most around you. Because he would never try to take away what is mine. Plus he already has someone.”

“Are you implying the others will?”

“Well they are only human. Reggie is a bad flirt too. And he likes to test people and their resolve. He already has tested your character. That’s who he is. In his eyes if you would sleep with him then he would be doing me a favor.”

“Well technically I did sleep with him.” Kailee bit her bottom l*p and smiled.

Trey chuckled. “And he is lucky I am letting him off because of that. If it wasn’t because he was helping you…well I would not have tolerated it.”

Kailee leaned her head into his chest. “Are you going to be gone all day tomorrow? Will you usually be gone during the day?”

Trey traced his fingers over her bare arm with a frown. “Yes, I have things I have to take care of tomorrow and the rest of this week. I hate leaving you Kailee. I wish I could stay with you all the time. I promise that it won’t always be like this. There is going to come a time soon when I will never leave your side. You will probably end up sick of me.”

Kailee shook her head and smiled. “No, I think that sounds really nice.” The idea of having someone constant in her life who she could depend on and share love with… was honestly a dream for her. It sounded like a wonderful fantasy to have that.

“I’ll never get sick of being by your side, ever. You are always on my mind and all that I can think about. Sometimes it is a struggle to focus on other things.” Trey said lowly as he continued to play with her arm. “Did your uncle treat you horribly?”

Kailee was a bit shocked by his question. She thought about it quietly for a brief moment. “He could have treated me worse and he could have treated me better. For the most part I was ignored. I had to either stay in the attic or in the back garden. I was given two small meals a day. Once in the morning and once for dinner. The worst part was having so many people around but being alone.” Kailee stared into the darkness. “I had Sparks. He was my main companion. And on occasion I got to talk with new maids or gardeners. My uncle may be my family, but I avoided him as much as I could.”

Kailee felt a small shudder creep over her body. She could not help it. It was her natural reaction towards her uncle. There was something about him that made her b***d curl. She did not trust him. She could not help but feel he was a horrible human. And he could not be a good man with the way she was treated in his care. So she knew she was on to something. But even before… even before her parents and aunt were killed, she had avoided the man. His cold unfeeling eyes even made her dodge him as a child.

“Well you are here with me now. You are mine.” Trey said as he adjusted her body deeper into his side.

“My uncle traded me for some of your lands?” Kailee asked and she absorbed his warmth and inhaled his scent which seemed to be getting stronger.

“Yes.”

Kailee pondered with a small frown on her face. “Why though? What did he want from your lands…” She gnawed at the bottom of her l*p as she started to put pieces of the puzzle together. “My family lands run along yours, don’t they? They border one another.”

“Yes, they do.”

She let her thoughts run deep. It is possible he killed her family for their land then. Thinking it had something that he needed. And Trey’s father had also died… What if that wasn’t an accident? What if there was something between the two lands that her uncle wanted? Something bad enough to kill for. She leaned her head back and sighed. But why keep her alive though? What was she missing there? Unless he always planned to use her to barter with. In either case… Trey should not have traded his lands. If there was something he wanted on them it could not be anything good. Especially if he was willing to kill for it.

“Trey… you probably should not have traded part of your land for me.” Kailee whispered out quietly.

Trey smiled. “You are more important than the land. Besides, it was better this way. I would have done whatever I needed to in order to claim you. This was a perfect opportunity for me. I knew how badly he wanted my land. He wanted it bad enough to give up you.”

“I told you my uncle could care less about me.-”

“That is not true, Kailee. He has kept you all these years for a reason… don’t you think so?”

“You sound like you already know why my uncle has kept me… you do, don’t you?” Kailee felt his muscles tighten around her. And his breathing became a bit heavier. She felt like she was so close to figuring out this puzzle. But she was still missing a lot of pieces. Why was she left alive? Why did her uncle want the land? And why did Trey want her?
