Noah sat down in front of the principal's desk, glancing at the two men sitting in front of him. Mr. Acorn was asked to wait outside the office, which was quite ironic considering that he was the principal of the school.
"So, Noah," said the one on the left, breaking the silence. "How are you? Is school okay? What about your parents?"
Noah was skeptical about the sudden friendliness.
"I'm fine," was the only question he answered. "May I ask why I'm here?"
"Right, yes, of course," said the man. He took out a file from his jacket and slid it towards Noah. Hesitant at first, Noah opened the file and furrowed his brows in confusion. It was a file with all his school grades and achievements since elementary.
"Your teachers have told us that you're a remarkable student. First in every subject, straight A's everywhere, perfect attendance,..."
Noah didn't understand what this had to do with him being called to the office. While the one on the left listed down his achievements, the man on the right tapped his fingers impatiently against his arm. He looked annoyed, having the kind of face one had when holding in a fart.
"Am I in trouble?" asked Noah bluntly. The man shook his head.
"No, no, of course not, on the contrary! We-"
"Carl, we don't have all day to do this. Please, just tell the boy why he's here," sighed the annoyed one.
"We're supposed to do this subtly. We can't just throw the news in his face! He's just a kid."
"Yes. A brilliant kid who's going to transfer schools," said the one on the right, his impatience letting the cat out of the bag. Noah blinked in surprise, wondering if he had heard right.
"You can't just blurt it out like that!" cried Carl in horror. His colleague ignored him, pulling out an FBI ID with his face on it, just like in the movies, showing it to Noah.
"Look, kid, we're with the FBI. The name's Geo, and sitting beside me is Carl (Carl let out a groan as things weren't going as he had planned). We've been looking for someone in town with a perfect profile and a clean background like yours," explained Geo, folding his ID back into his jacket. "We want you to transfer Bran Prep School. You fit their quotas and you're exactly the type of student that they're looking for. A kid like you could transfer there without anyone being suspicious."
"Bran Prep School?" repeated Noah in disbelief. Wasn't that the school with the mysterious attacks? The one located in the middle of absolutely nowhere? The place for bougie, rich kids?
"That's the one. We need you to go undercover. Of course, you'll continue your studies there, but we need you to do something else for us."
Noah could hear the words, but if it was as if his brain couldn't process any of it. None of this was making sense!
"Geo, I think you should take things slow," murmured Carl.
"You've heard about the mysterious attacks over there, haven't you? Of course, you have, it's all over the news," said Geo. "You're a smart kid, Noah, real smart. So tell me, what do you think has been causing all this disturbance up North?"
"Um, man-eating hamsters?" gulped Noah. But Geo's humor was as dry as his lips. Carl snickered, slapping his knee.
"Man-eating hamsters, that's a good one," he laughed.
"Vampires," corrected Geo. "Vampires are the ones attacking students."
Noah blinked.
"Vampires? You mean like the ones in Twilight...?"
"No, kid, we're not talking about those sparkly, moody, chick-flick vampires. We're talking about the real deal here," deadpanned Geo. "Dangerous, blood-sucking, man-eating monsters that are running an illegal gang and hurting our citizens."
Noah was speechless. He didn't know if he should be surprised that Geo might have actually read the Twilight series, or that vampires might actually exist.
"The FBI has been tracking vampires for years, and we've haven't had much success since vampires move individually, making them particularly hard to catch. They aren't like werewolves, they work alone, live alone, and hunt alone, which makes them almost impossible to replace," explained Carl. "But it seems as if a group of vampires decided to form some kind of gang. It's never happened before, but it's helped us record their activity and give us an estimation of their location. We've heard that some of their members attend Bran Prep High, which is why we need you to go there and investigate for us."
Vampires? Werewolves? A gang?! Noah sat there, trying to say something, but his mind remained blank.
"Don't worry, Noah, you'll be in safe hands," reassured Carl, worried about how pale Noah had turned. "Nothing bad will happen to you and you won't be in danger as long as-"
"Actually, the kid has a pretty high chance of getting killed," snorted Geo.
"Geo! What did we say about being subtle?" hissed Carl under his breath.
Geo ignored him.
"We need you and your parents to sign this paper before we're allowed to give you any further information on your mission," said Geo, sliding a contract towards the poor kid.
"Why can't you send someone from the FBI?" demanded Noah, refusing to touch or even look at the contract.
"Because," he said. "Vampires are extremely smart and cunning creatures, they've lived centuries longer than we have. They'll suspect something the second a grown man that isn't a teacher steps on school grounds. We need someone who'll blend in perfectly."
"But why me? Why not a different student?"
"You're the only student in town who fits the school's criteria. Bran Prep doesn't know about our investigation, and we want to keep it that way. Which means that we can't bend their rules and send in just any normal student, they'll refuse their candidature right away. They only accept the best of the best, and that means you."
Noah was too dumbfounded to be flustered. He was waiting for someone to jump out from under the desk with a large camera and shout, "You've just been pranked!" Unfortunately, all that was under Mr. Acorn's desk was gum that Micka secretly stuck under there whenever he was called down to the office.
"My mom would never send me so far away from home," Noah said.
"It's the best school in the region, she'll be delighted."
Noah wanted to argue, but he knew that Carl was right. His mom would be delighted. No one got into Bran Prep High, no one but the 0.00000001% of the rich, smart kids of their region.
"We don't have enough to pay tuition," he implied, trying to replace whatever excuse he could.
"It'll be covered by the government."
Noah frowned. "My Mom would never agree on sending me on a suicide mission."
"She doesn't need to know," said Geo, already having anticipated this conversation far ahead. "This mission is top secret, which means that no one else can know but you. Not your friends, not your family."
"And what if I tell them?" challenged Noah. Geo and Carl both shared a look.
"We didn't want to go this far but," said Geo, raising a brow. "Your best friend, his name is Micka Meraki, right?"
Noah was quick in the mind and said, "Never heard of him."
Even if it just a lie, it still hurt to say that Micka wasn't his friend. Noah promised himself that he'd apologize to Mika later.
"No?" asked Carl, taking something out of his pocket. Where were all these documents coming from? How did they all even fit in those small pockets?!
Carl took out a handful of pictures and spread them in front of Noah. There were baby pictures of Noah and Micka playing in the tub together, running around in the house in their underwear, fighting and pulling each other's hair,... Noah didn't understand how they got their hands on those pictures. He quickly flipped the one that had his peepee showing, embarrassed.
"This should be illegal!" he shouted.
"You fight crime with crime," shrugged Geo. "Mika has a pretty bad record despite his young age. School fights, detention, talking back to teachers-"
"What's your point?" snapped Noah, not liking it when people spoke badly of his best friend.
"We'll have him kicked out of school if you disagree with our terms."
Noah's eyes widened. "You can't do that!"
"We're the FBI, we can do whatever we want."
"That's abusing your authority! I'll tell the cops," threatened Noah.
"We have power over the police too," said Carl, almost sounding apologetic.
"We'll give you some time to think about it," suggested Geo, as if Noah actually had a choice. "We'd like your's and your mother's signature by tomorrow morning. All the information and regulations should be written in there. The fees, the dorms, the everything. We'll talk about the details on your mission once the contract is signed. Keep in mind, you transfer in three days. The quicker, the better."
"But-"
"We don't know how they exist or who the Hell let them these vamps out of their dusty coffins, but you're going to get to the bottom of it."
Geo leaned over and clapped Noah on the shoulder, giving the poor kid a hardly visible smile. Carl was surprised that Geo, who was known to have a never smiling brick-face, actually made an effort to smile.
"You're going to do big things, kid," grunted Geo. "You're going to save lives."
Noah frowned.
Yeah, but for the price of mine.
