Chapter 77

“Yes, Mr. Garland.” The woman nodded and walked away to set the table.

Based on this woman’s appearance and tone, Calla deduced that she was probably a maid.

Once again, she thought that Mercer was quite a thoughtful man. He knew that Calla would need to rest in bed for a few days, so he hired a maid to do chores around the residence.

Within seconds, Calla’s anger dissipated. This was because she’d realized something after getting to know Mercer, although his mood changed as quickly as the weather, and he had a short fuse as well as a sharp tongue, he was a kind person.,

He frequently considered problems from other people’s perspectives. He just didn’t know how to express his feelings. There wasn’t a need to get angry at someone like that. He wouldn’t react to her outbursts, and she’d just be a victim of her own anger.

There were three dishes on the table: roasted pork ribs, garlic butter green beans, and mashed potato respectively. There was also a ceramic pot of clam chowder.

Calla adored mashed potatoes and had made them multiple times after moving in. She recalled the maid mentioning that some of her favorite dishes were on the table. Was she referring to the mashed potatoes? How did she know she liked them?

Calla looked up and stared at Mercer. He must’ve been the one who told the maid about her preferences. Although he wasn’t an extremely likable person, he was thoughtful. She couldn’t help but smile.

Mercer looked at the older woman standing stiffly in front of the table. “Jasmine, sit down and eat with us.”

She smiled and replied, “Mr. Garland, that would be inappropriate.”

Calla looked up at this woman whom he called Jasmine. It seemed like they were quite familiar with each other.

Mercer frowned and said, “It’s not like we’re in Sedonia.”

When she heard that, Jasmine nodded and grabbed a small serving of pork ribs for herself before sitting in the corner and eating slowly.

However, she was very reserved and did not take any beans or mash for herself. Calla saw that Jasmine seemed mortified when Mercer picked her plate up and served her a bunch of the sides.

Calla was becoming increasingly confused by Jasmine’s identity. Just then, Mercer

looked up and said, “Jasmine is one of the most senior workers in my family. She took care of me when I was young.”

He added, “Currently, your health is not at its best. Thus, I invited her over from Sedonia to take care of you.”

After hearing his explanation, Calla understood everything that was going on. That explained why Mercer was so respectful toward Jasmine, and why she was so reserved. It was because of the nature of their relationship.

Calla smiled and said, “Thank you for your help, Jasmine.”

In truth, she felt that Mercer was making a big deal out of nothing. Her body was fine and she didn’t need anyone to serve her. However, it was his choice, and she’d accept his kindness gratefully.

This time, Mercer ate relaxedly. That said, he hadn’t eaten much. Calla couldn’t help but furrow her brows.

Although he’d eaten the food she cooked in the same elegant way, he hadn’t eaten so little. Why was he eating so little now? Jasmine had always been the one taking care of him. She should know his preferences.

Jasmine’s countenance grew stern as she questioned, “Mr. Garland, why are you eating so little? That explains why you haven’t put on any weight.”

“My appetite has always been like this. I’m done.” He pushed the plate away from him, got up, and left the dining table.

Calla was still swimming in confusion when Jasmine said, “Mr. Garland has never had a big appetite since he a child.”

Calla frowned. He didn’t have a big appetite? Why had he polished off the dishes she’d cooked the first time, then? Had he been starving for two days already at that point?

Jasmine smiled and continued, “Mrs. Garland, have some more. You’re eating for two people now.
