Shawn was clearly a diplomatic person, and he immediately glossed things over. “You’re too old to be throwing fits. You and Mercer just had a tiny squabble. You’re not going to take it out on your daughter–in- law, are you?”

Anyone could tell that Rose did not like Calla, and Shawn was trying to smooth things over for his wife. Calla lowered her head and pretended not to know anything, but she felt Mercer squeeze her hand.

It was a tiny gesture, but it made her feel warm inside.

She knew that she had no reason to feel insecure and that she didn’t have to care about how Mercer’s parents treated her.

She had married him because she loved him, not because she was interested in their family’s status. She just wanted the baby in her belly to have a proper identity, and now she had already achieved her goal. Nothing else was important to her right now.

This made Calla feel better at once.

“Calla, this will be your home in the future, so just relax. I’ve got work today, but let’s have a meal together soon.” Shawn walked over to her, smiling.

Calla stood up quickly and nodded. “Thank you, Dad.”

Shawn then walked over to the foyer. There was a man in a suit waiting outside, holding a briefcase. He looked like a secretary of some sort. He leaned over to speak in Shawn’s ear, and then the two of them left the villa together.

After Shawn had left, there was a brief silence before Rose spoke up. “I hear that you used to work at Atlas?”

Calla knew that Mercer had already told Rose about her situation, so she nodded. “I used to work in the finance department at Atlas.”

“Oh, so you’re in finance, are you? No wonder you’re so calculating.” Rose’s lip curled into a cold smile.

Calla immediately knew Rose was under the impression that she had done everything she could to marry Mercer because of his money. Calla detested the scornful smile on Rose’s face, but for Mercer’s sake, she did not retaliate.

“What’s your family like?” Rose changed the subject when Calla did not reply.

“I live with my mother and younger sister,” she answered.

Rose’s brow furrowed. “What about your father? Did he pass away, or is your mother divorced?*

Calla could see the disdain in Rose’s eyes, but she met her eyes bravely and said without fear, “My father ran off with his mistress 15 years ago, and there’s no such thing as a father in my life. Please do not mention him in front of me again.”

There was a look of surprise in Rose’s eyes. She was probably surprised that Calla had spoken so boldly about such a thing. After a while, she nodded. “I see.”

“What does your mother do?” Rose continued.

“Before I started working, she did odd jobs. And after I started working, she just took care of the house while my sister was still in school.

“Apart from my uncle and his family, we don’t have any other relatives. Previously we had a difficult time, and all our relatives were afraid that we would try to borrow money from them, so they cut off contact with us,” Calla said in one breath.

Rose’s brow furrowed after she heard what Calla had to say.
