Chapter 88
Before Rose could speak, Calla said, “Mom, do you have anything else you want to know? You can ask everything all at once, and I’ll tell you everything.”
This instantly provoked Rose to anger. She put her teacup down on the coffee table heavily and said angrily, “Do you know who you’re talking to? I’m your elder! How could you be so rude? Don’t you have any
manners at all?”
In the face of Rose’s anger, Calla answered calmly, “Mom, you say that you’re an elder of mine. Does that mean you accept me as your daughter–in–law?”
This put Rose in a difficult position. Her original intention had been to ask Calla some questions which she knew would humiliate her, and then she would reject her as her daughter–in–law on the pretext of their unevenly matched family backgrounds. She hadn’t expected Calla to pull this move.
Mercer had been planning to step in if Calla was defeated, but the latter had managed to anger Rose with just a few sentences. Rose wasn’t an easy person to deal with and had triumphed over many people in the past, but today she had lost to a young woman.
This made Mercer laugh softly, adding to Rose’s fury. She said grimly, “Mercer, what kind of woman did you marry? How could she talk back to me right to my face? You know what kind of family we are, don you? Aren’t you afraid that she’ll embarrass you in the future?”
“Mom, I know that she isn’t going to do well in social situations, so I’m not planning to take her anywhere. I was reluctant to bring her back here, but I had no choice because you and Dad kept pushing me to do so,
Mercer spoke lazily.
Calla turned to look at him, then looked back at the grim–faced Rose. She could sense that they were already on bad terms. She did not think that Mercer was a disrespectful person. Had the two of them had some kind of severe conflict in the past?
“You’d better remember what you just said! In the future, I don’t want to see her at any of our family gatherings or the company’s annual parties!” Rose said firmly.
Mercer did not answer. Instead, he turned to the maid who was standing beside them. “Jenny, take Ms. Sherman up to my room so that she can wash up.”
“Yes, Mr. Garland.” Jenny hurriedly walked over to Calla’s side.
Calla knew that Rose and Mercer had things to talk about that they didn’t want her to hear, so she got up and followed Jenny upstairs.
Jenny brought her to a very large room. The decor and furniture in the room were the same as those downstairs. They were all made of aged mahogany.
The bed, cupboards, study table, and bookshelves all looked very grand. There were also paintings hung on the wall. It didn’t seem to match Mercer’s personality, and she couldn’t imagine him growing up in this kind of environment.
“Ms. Sherman, the bathroom is on the left.” Jenny gestured to her.
“You may leave,” Calla said, and Jenny obliged.

Calla looked around, then went to powder her nose in the bathroom. She washed her hands and then sneaked out of the bedroom.
She stood at the top of the stairs for a while, wondering when Mercer would come up. She suddenly felt the urge to go home.
At that moment, she heard the sound of their conversation drifting up from downstairs.
“Mercer, are you still fixated on that previous relationship of yours? That Calla-”
Mercer cut Rose off before she could finish. “Mom, I know what I’m doing. You don’t have to worry.”
