Chapter 89

#25 BONUS

“You’re doing this to get revenge on me, aren’t you?” Rose’s raised voice drifted up a few moments later. “You’re my mother. Why would I want to get revenge on you? Besides, I wouldn’t use my own

marriage as a tool for revenge.” There was an icy tone in Mercer’s voice.

Calla couldn’t help frowning when she heard this. Did the two of them really have a feud of some sort? There was clear hostility in their conversation.

What previous relationship was Rose talking about? Did she mean that Mercer had loved his ex–girlfriend very much?

Calla was confused, but her strong curiosity made her continue to eavesdrop on the stairs. She knew it was rude to eavesdrop, but their conversation included her, after all.

“Would you have married this woman if it wasn’t to get revenge on me? She has a sad family background and even sadder skills. And although she isn’t bad–looking, she’s certainly no beauty.

“Just what do you see in her? You know what kind of family we are. If you marry someone like her, how am I going to show my face in public once people replace out?” Rose sounded slightly hysterical.

“Calla is pregnant with my child,” Mercer spoke calmly in the face of Rose’s accusing tirade.

Rose was clearly stunned. After a moment, she said angrily, “I knew she must have played some kind of trick! She’s using her pregnancy! How could you be so immature, son?

“So what if she’s with child? She can abort it! In the worst–case scenario, we can give her a sum of money once she has the baby and tell her to leave at once. Did you have to marry such a vulgar woman and bring her into the family?”

Calla’s chest was filled with rage. In the past, her fiery temper would have made her rush down to argue with Rose. At the very least, she would have grabbed her bag and left at once. But she was married now, and she had to think about Mercer. He had been defending her, after all.

His voice traveled up from downstairs. “Mom, who I marry is my own business. Please do not insult Calla with those dirty words. She’s my wife, and she’s also your daughter–in–law. In the future, she will be the mother of your grandchild. Whether you acknowledge it or not, we’re already a family!”

Calla smiled contentedly.

She and Mercer hadn’t had deep feelings for each other at the beginning, but she felt very happy to see. him defending her in front of his own mother.

When she had dated Tim, his parents had been against their relationship too. After all, Calla came from a broken family, and she would have to support Carol and Zoey in the future.

It was a heavy burden, so it wasn’t a surprise that Tim’s parents had been against it. However, Tim had not dared to go against his parents openly. Instead, he settled for meeting Calla in secret so that his parents wouldn’t replace out. This continued for several years.

When she thought about those difficult times in the past, Calla felt that no matter how far she and Mercer managed to travel on this path together, at least he had never hurt her feelings.

He took care of her in many ways, and she was grateful to him from the bottom of her heart. After a couple of minutes, Calla decided not to continue eavesdropping as it would just make her feel bad.

She turned and walked into Mercer’s bedroom.
