Chapter 1663: Will You Believe Me?
On the other side, Joyce took a brief rest in the hotel where she wasstaying, waiting for news from Luther. She couldn't sleep soundly, aspregnancy had left her unusually exhausted. After dozing off for a while, she woke up to replace that the sky had darkened. As she sat up, she feltsweat all over her back, her forehead covered in perspiration, and herthroat parched with thirst.
Upon hearing Joyce's movements, Darrin, who was in the adjacentroom of the suite, immediately walked over and knocked on the door."Miss, are you awake?"
He opened the door and entered, seeing Joyce wanting to pour herselfsome water. He quickly stepped forward and poured her a glass."Thank you."
Joyce took the glass and drank it all in one go, but the discomfort in herchest didn't alleviate. She glanced at her phone and saw that Lutherhadn't called or messaged her. So, she asked Darrin, "Has hecontacted you? Any news?"
Darrin shook his head. "No, Miss. It has been four years since theincident. Investigating this won't be a quick task. As long as it's ahuman act, there will always be traces left behind."
"Okay," Joyce nodded. She was internally anxious, wanting to hold ontohope but afraid to hope too much. This conflicting feeling tore at herrepeatedly, making it impossible for her to replace peace.
“You must be hungry. I'll order some food for you," Darrin stood up,turned, and walked toward the living room of the suite to make the call.Joyce walked around the room and finally stopped in front of the floor-to-ceiling window. She looked outside as the night gradually replacedthe day, leaving only darkness, which made her feel empty inside. After struggling for a moment, unable to wait patiently any longer, shedecided to urge Luther. She picked up her phone and dialed hisnumber.
As soon as the call connected, she heard the ringing sound not faraway. She quickly turned around and coincidentally, Luther opened thedoor and walked in, holding the still ringing phone in his hand.
Upon seeing her, Luther shook the phone in front of her. “I'm back.”Joyce quickly hung up the phone and rushed towards him. "How is itgoing? Any new discoveries?"
Luther, carrying her in his arms, walked towards the sofa and sat downwith her on it. "Impatient, aren't we?" He kissed her cheek and gotstraight to the point, "I made some progress. Someone bribed the vicedirector of the hospital back then and publicly claimed that Iris wasdead. They even used fake ashes. But the truth is, Iris was secretlytaken away and hidden."
Joyce held her breath, waiting for him to continue. Hope surged withinher once again.
"But for now, we don't know who did it. We need to further investigate. What we can be certain of is that when they privately took Iris away andhid her, Iris was still alive,” Luther continued.
"And now? Does anyone know lris's current situation?" Joyce askedeagerly.
Luther shook his head. "Not clear. Even the vice director doesn't knowhow Iris is currently doing. After all, he hasn't seen her since then.”"Why did they take Iris away? What is their purpose? I can't figure outwho I offended and why they would do this," Joyce covered her mouth, her face turning pale.
"Do you have any clue about who the other party might be?" Shelooked up into his eyes, filled with anticipation.
Luther's eyes darkened, and he looked away. Suddenly, he embracedher.
“No clues for now. Don't worry, give me some more time, and I willdefinitely replace out," he said, resting his chin on her trembling shoulder. He couldn't bring himself to look into her eyes that were filled withhope.
He kept the truth from her. He already knew who was behind all this. But for now, he didn't want to tell her.
Joyce's voice trembled with sadness. "Why did all of this happen tome? Why would someone target a child? Poor Iris, she had to rely onvarious instruments and tubes to survive from the moment she wasborn, and now she has to endure this..."
Luther gently patted her back. "Don't worry. The chances of Iris beingalive are high. It's already a blessing from above. Whatever conditionsthe other party may propose, we can meet them. We will definitely saveIris. Trust me."
"But... we don't know what they really want..." Joyce's voice choked up.At this point, she was willing to give up everything in exchange for Iris'sreturn.
Luther cupped her face and looked deeply into her eyes. "We havebeen through so much together. Do you believe me?"
Confused, Joyce looked at him."Why are you suddenly asking this?Don't you think I trust you enough?" she asked.
Softly, Luther replied, "I am a bit worried. After all, I made so manymistakes in the past, which led to the current consequences.”
Joyce covered his lips with her hand. “Let's not bring up the past. It'snot all your fault.”
Luther looked at her earnestly. "If one day, you replace out or you think thatI betrayed you, would you still believe me?"
He asked each word, his serious tone and demeanor contrasting withtheir usual playful banter.
Feeling her heart tremble at his question, Joyce didn't know what hadcome over him or why he asked such a strange question.
"Answer me. Would you believe me? Would you forgive me?" he askedagain.
Joyce furrowed her brows, thought for a moment, and then nodded. She took his hand and placed it on her small abdomen. "I believe inyou, and they will believe in you too. I think Andres will also believe inyou. We are a family."
Luther chuckled softly, as if his mood had instantly brightened. Theheaviness from before was lifted.
"Remember what you said today," he said, pinching her cute nose. "Nomatter when, no matter what you hear or see, believe in my love foryou. It will never change.”
After speaking, he leaned in and kissed her lips.
Their kiss was tender and passionate, and he held her on his lap, embracing her as the kiss grew more intense.
Until they were interrupted by a cough.
Anderson pretended to cough, standing at the doorway. "Ahem,Mommy, Daddy, Mr. Hawkins’ dinner has arrived. Shall we eattogether? Or do you want to eat something else first?"
Joyce was startled and quickly broke free from Luther's embrace, giving him a stern look. He always lacked restraint in front of their child."Why does this child always say nonsense? Where did you learn thatfrom?" she scolded Anderson softly. This child, speaking just likeLuther, lacked restraint.
“You see, it's your influence that has corrupted him," she pinchedLuther's waist hard.
Luther laughed. "Alright, it's all my fault. You go ahead and eat. I'll joinyou soon."
Joyce stood up and took Anderson to the living room to have dinner.Luther watched her figure disappear from sight, and his eyes suddenlydarkened. His breathing became erratic, and his fists involuntarilyclenched, the veins on the back of his hand exposed.
Athena, she was still alive. So, when she fell off the cliff back then, shewas only unconscious, not dead.
Ten years had passed, and she had actually returned!
He had never even dared to dream of it.
What should he do with this woman?
