Chapter 1691: Understanding Each Other

BR Ice Cream Shop was located in the bustling city center, right next toKhebury's largest jewelry store, which had its own exclusive vault.During business hours, there was a connecting glass door between thetwo establishments.

It was evident that several men in black had fled here after robbing theadjacent jewelry store. No wonder there had been a commotion outsidejust now. The jewelry store had encountered trouble.

The jewelry store had security measures in place, making it difficult tofully control the people inside. However, the situation was different atthe neighboring ice cream shop; it was easier to hold children hostage.Joyce was already on guard and immediately shielded Andersonbehind her. As she scanned the area, she noticed there were six men inblack, three of them armed with guns and the other three with knives. Itwas uncommon to encounter a daytime robbery on the street, especially in Khebury, known for its good public safety. It had beenyears since such an incident had occurred.

One of the men in black with a knife charged towards Joyce, intendingto take her and the child hostage since she was closest to the entrance.Joyce sneered and swiftly kicked the knife out of the man's hand.Immediately after, she drew her gun and in just a second, fired twoshots consecutively, bringing down two of the men in black by hittingtheir wrists, the ones holding the guns.

With cries of pain, the three men in black collapsed to the ground, clutching their injured wrists and writhing in agony.

After hiding Kiki under the table, Reuben quickly subdued the closestman in black and disarmed him of his knife. Unfortunately, there werestill two men in black who were out of their attack range.

One of the men in black, with quick reflexes, grabbed the nearest littlegirl who had been enjoying her ice cream and held her in front of him, using a gun to press against her head.

The little girl was terrified and dropped her ice cream on the ground.Being young, she didn't understand the danger, only felt fear, and burstinto loud sobs.

Enraged, the man in black shouted, "Stop crying! If you cry again, I'llshoot you!"

The little girl's mother was knocked over by the man in black with asingle slap and fell to the ground, unable to speak due to the pain.Seeing her daughter being held at gunpoint, she desperately shook herhands and pleaded, "Don't cry, don't hurt her! Please don't! Nella, don'tcry! Listen to me, don't move, be a good girl and don't move."

The little girl, frightened to a certain extent, instinctively stopped crying. She only stared with teary eyes, filled with fear, mouth wide open asshe gasped for breath.

Meanwhile, another man in black took a little boy hostage with a knifeand threatened, "Don't come any closer! If anyone comes near, I'll stabhim!"

The little boy's mother couldn't handle the shock and immediatelyfainted, collapsing to the ground.

Joyce firmly shielded Anderson behind her, pointing her gun directly atthe man in black who held the little girl hostage, confronting himfiercely.

“Let her go! You won't escape!" she exclaimed.

She tried to replace an angle to make a move, but the man in black wasquite professional and didn't reveal many flaws. For a while, shecouldn't replace an opportunity to act.

At that moment, Joyce exchanged a glance with Reuben, signaling himnot to act rashly.

Naturally, Joyce understood the reasoning behind it. She raised aneyebrow, gesturing for Reuben to replace an opportunity to deal with theman holding the little boy hostage while she kept a close eye on theman holding the little girl.

The man in black clearly hadn't expected to encounter someone whocould shoot in an ice cream shop, let alone a woman. It was evidentthat the opponent had good marksmanship, having already taken downtwo of their group.

He started to panic, firmly pressing the gun against the little girl's headand shouted, "Put down your gun! If you don't, I'll shoot her right away!"Upon witnessing this, the little girl's mother hurriedly knelt down andpleaded with Joyce, repeatedly kowtowing, “Please, put down yourgun! Otherwise, he'll really kill my daughter. Please, put it down! You'realso a mother, aren't you?!"

Joyce frowned and replied to the little girl's mother, "If I put down mygun now, we will all become hostages."

She used her body to shield Anderson, protecting him like a motherbird. She never expected that in peaceful Khebury, in the heart of thecity, they would encounter a gunpoint robbery. She didn't wantAnderson to be subjected to any further distress.

If she put down her gun, it was evident that the other men inblackwould overpower them all. Once all four children in the ice cream shopbecame hostages, they would have no room for resistance and wouldbe at the mercy of the criminals. It was too dangerous.

At that moment, Anderson remained surprisingly calm. He tugged atJoyce's shirt, looking around, and spotted Kiki hiding under the table.Kiki's face had turned pale, trembling in fear, and crying louder andlouder. She looked at Anderson with pleading eyes, appearing pitiful.Impatiently, Anderson glared at Kiki and snapped, "Don't make asound, you idiot." He was filled with disdain. Kiki couldn't remain calmin dangerous situations and only knew how to cry, a far cry from Fair.Crying at a time like this would only irritate the criminals and increasethe danger.

After being scolded by Anderson, Kiki finally stopped crying. Sheobediently hid under the table, keeping quiet.

The little girl's mother crawled a few steps forward, continuing to pleadwith Joyce, "Please, put down your gun! They really will shoot! How canyou only care about your own child and not others’ children?!"

A strong sense of disgust flashed across Reuben's face, revealing thenakedness of human nature. Moral blackmail, on what grounds? If itweren't for Joyce taking down three of them in an instant, they probablywouldn't even have the right to confront them now. Moreover, judgingfrom the expression of the men in black, they didn't intend to harm thechildren. The whole situation had changed, and the charges would betoo severe.

Joyce's eyebrows were tightly knitted.

Looking around the store, there was no one else who could help exceptfor Reuben. Unfortunately, he hadn't brought Grizela with him today, and she hadn't brought Darrin either. And now they faced this situation. She and Reuben had never worked together before, so it was unknownif they had any understanding between them.

Next, she had a difficult task in mind that required Reuben'scooperation. Otherwise, if they lost their position, they would be at adisadvantage, with all four children becoming hostages.

Coincidentally, Reuben looked at Joyce.

Joyce made a gesture, slightly pursing her lips.

It was unclear if Reuben understood her hint.

She slowly bent her knees, squatting down bit by bit, raising one handabove her head, while the other hand holding the gun followed herwrist, gradually descending until it was close to the ground.

On the other side, Reuben tensed his body, waiting for an opportunityto act.

"Put down your gun, now!" the man in black who held the little girlshouted loudly.

The man holding the little boy hostage had a tense expression, constantly watching Joyce's movements.

A sound of "click."

As Joyce let go of the gun, she simultaneously swiftly threw a spinningdart from her hand.
