Chapter 54

Asher chuckled softly. "She said she'll only be with me if my exam scores surpass Lysander's. Otherwise, she claims Im not good enough for her."

Just thinking about it made Asher angry, and he wasn't sure who to vent to about it. Daphne, however, seerned like a decent person to talk to.

When Daphne heard this, she found it completely ridiculous. "She's out of her mind, isn't she? Does she seriously think she's some kind of high-class debutante? Lysander's family background and yours are worlds apart! "A kid like Lysander, who grew up with everything handed to him, has resources we can't even compare to. Does she think it's easy to score higher than him?"

Asher sighed, hearing her echo his own thoughts. "Yeah, well, I'm just not good enough. I'll keep my distance from her from

"Asher, you're just too pitiful," Daphne said, looking at him. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you to get close to Elara. No one would've thought she'd turn out to be like this.

Elara hogged Asher's time, walking to and from school with him every day, making everyone think Asher while putting on airs and acting superior.

Even Daphne, with her generally mild temperament, couldn't stand Elara's behavior anymore.

Asher remained silent. After a quiet moment, Daphne asked, "How's her relationship with Lysander going these days?"

It's been a while, so Lysander should have found out about all her gossip by now, right?' Daphne thought.

Asher responded, "Lysander hasn't come around for the past couple of days. The other day, she went home by herself, so I'm guessing they had a falling out."

Then you should ignore her for now, Daphne advised "The more you treat her well, the more shell think you can't live without her, and that's when she'll start acting superior. If you go back to being cold like before, she'll definitely start panicking" That was what Asher had been thinking, too. He had his pride. While he genuinely wanted to treat Elara well, that didn't mean he'd pamper her for no reason, especially after everything she'd said to him.

Her words had truly hurt him.

After class, Daphne ran up to Asher and struck up a conversation with him, intentionally doing so in front of Elara

Elara, however, didn't seem to care at all, showing no sign of anger. This only made Daphne more frustrated, so she decided to initiate a conversation with Elara herself. "Elara, how was your trip to Starfield City?" Daphne asked. "It was nice. Too bad you couldn't come," Elara replied.

"Did you go with Lysander?" As soon as Daphne mentioned Lysander, the others nearby couldn't help but glance over at Flara

"Yeah," Elara said calmly. She had no need to hide her relationship with Lysander.

"He hasn't dumped you yet?" someone sitting in the front row asked, half-jokingly.

Elara knew exactly what they were implying. Although it was common knowledge that she was close to Lysander, many still Chapter 54

believed she was just a keptoman. They assumed it was only matter of time before Lysander would break things off

"Nope. He's absolutely head over heels for me," Elara said with a smirk.

"And what about Asher?" Daphne suddenly interjected, standing tip for Asher. "Isn't it a bit much to keep stringing him along. like this?"

Hearing Daphne confront her so directly, Elara was momentarily stunned.

So, is Daphne standing up for Asher now? If I remember correctly, wasn't she the one who pushed Asher to get involved with me in the first place? Asher didn't want to, and she even threatened to break up with him over it, Elara thought. Elara turned to Daphne with a surprised look. "Isn't he your boyfriend?"

Daphne met Elara's gaze, feeling a bit awkward at the question. After all, they were still students, and even if they were in a relationship, they had to keep it low-key.

After a brief pause, Daphine stubbornly replied, "Asher and I are just classmates."

"Really?" Elara said, raising an eyebrow. "Aren't you two pretty close? On his birthday, didn't you publicly say you were dating? Or am I remembering that wrong?"

Elara deliberately glanced around the room. With that one reminder, everyone recalled what Daphne had said before

Back then, Daphne had been focused solely on securing Asher, thinking he was a rich second-generation heir. She hadn't thought it through and left herself no room to back out.

But ever since discovering that Asher was merely the son of their family's driver, she found herself in a rather awkward position.

Seeing Daphne remain silent, trying to play dumb, Elara wasn't about to let her off so easily.

Feigning confusion, Elara said, "It's strange. You two haven't really been hanging out much lately. Could it be that now that you know Asher's family isn't wealthy, and that he's just the son of our driver, you're no longer interested in dating him?" With just a few words, Elara painted Daphne as a money-grubber. Daphne's face flushed red.

It was true, after all, Daphne had been the one who publicly announced she was dating Asher, and now Elara had used it against her. If she really did break up with Asher, people would naturally think poorly of her.

Daphne noticed everyone's eyes on her and feared that her perfect image might crumble.

She quickly defended herself, "Of course not! I just saw that you've been spending so much time with Asher lately, so I didn't want to intrude.

"I know you've always liked him, so I figured there was no need to ruin our friendship over a guy. I'm happy to step aside for

you two.

"There's no need," Elara quickly responded, eager to make it clear that she didn't want Daphne pushing Asher her way. "If that's what you're thinking, you can rest easy. There's absolutely nothing going on between Asher and me. "He's just been catching a ride with me to school. And there's no way I'd be stringing him along like you said. I'm not blind. I'm not going to pass up someone as great as Lysander to fight over him with you."

With those few words, Elara belittled Asher. She set up an unfavorable comparison between him and Lysander. The contrast was painfully obvious.

Daphne, realizing that Elara was now painting Asher as undesirable and seemingly trying to hand him over to her, was, of course, unwilling to accept that

'Why should I take sõimeone, Elara doesn't want? Daphne thought Trn not some garbage collector. If Elara doesn't want Asher anymore, then I don't want to be with him either

Daphne snapped back. "If that's the case, then why did you lie to him, saying you'd be with him if he scored higher than Lysander? Isn't that the very definition of stringing him along?"

Elara shot a meaningful glance at Asher, surprised that he'd even shared that with Daphne.

They must be pretty close for him to trust her with something like that, Elara mused. 'Maybe, in his eyes, Daphne really is someone trustworthy.

With a slight smile, Elara explained, That's because Asher was the one who insisted on being with me. I guess he started getting anxious when I ignored him last semester. I only said that to reject him. "Everyone knows he's always ranked behind Lysander in every exam. There's no way he'd ever surpass Lysander.

"You didn't seriously think I was leading him on, did you? The truth is, even if I did give him a chance, he still wouldn't have surpassed Lysander, right?"

"You..." Daphne was so furious that she couldn't replace the words,
