There was only one thing I could do. And that was to win. For the pack, for all the people who trusted her, for her children, for Layan, for the daughter in her womb, and for the wolf who had made her see the world differently. So no matter what happened, she had to destroy Liam and most essential, stay alive.

With those thoughts in her mind she lunged at the enemy. This time she focused all her senses and strength to take the necessary bites. She knew that the longer she delayed the more likely Layan and Hades would be in danger. But Liam moved too quickly and his teeth landed on top of her shoulder blade. They trembled as they made contact with the surface with little muscle. Still he squeezed and yanked at the skin, trying to do as much damage as possible.

Liam grunted in pain and moved his head to bite down as one of Layan’s paws landed on his eye and buried itself in it. The larger wolf shook his head and nearly knocked him to the ground. The difference in strength was too great. Luckily for the red-haired wolf, Hades broke his fall by growling in response. Nebraska fell beside him moments later. She gasped and spat out the chunk of b***d.

The wound caused by the omega would not close as her eye did so with impressive force. Nebraska moved away from them, attracting Liam’s attention. Her alpha and his friend could help her but that only put them in more danger, she was safer than anyone, her wounds were closing thanks to Layan’s b***d inside her. She couldn’t risk it. With her mind she stopped both of their movements and the wolves stood stiffly in place snarling at what she had done to them. That was for the best.

Liam lunged at her hard and the two of them were once again embroiled in a fight of bites, scratches, fangs, b***d. Hades almost went mad with the image and the helplessness of not being able to do anything, he was paralyzed. That he would scold and punish her if they got out of this for doing that to him, it was certain. Next to him Layan was no better. His muscles were tense as well as Hades’ trying to move in vain.

Nebraska and Liam parted almost breathlessly, both of them. Even at this point, the she-wolf had taken so many bites that recovery was a torturous and painful process and was becoming slow. At least he had the welcome sight of a wolf with more wounds than flesh in place. But he was not winning. She could hold her own against him, she had taken some of his dominance from him with the help of her daughter, he was weak but not advancing. This could go on for days before either of them fell. His regeneration was much slower than at the beginning. He figured it was Liam’s toxins, he didn’t know how many his body could take.

They were evenly matched.

-Do you need my help one last time, Ma?

Nebraska’s world went dark and she found herself in her human form. Total silence was all around her only being able to hear her own breathing. Barefoot footsteps were projected in front of her and from the shadows her daughter slowly appeared. Her long dark hair blended into the background in an unusual way.

-Priscilla,” she mentioned her name to receive a smile from her daughter.

-Ma, let me help you, if we don’t do something, that wolf will kill my family and my wolf. I can’t allow that.

The more Nebraska looked at her the more they were alike and yet not. She said the words but they seemed empty, as if she was empty. The omega approached her daughter and touched her face. Her skin was cold and pale. He wrapped his arm around her neck and pulled her to him, holding her close. He didn’t know why but his chest tightened at the sight of her and his eyes filled with tears.

-Don’t cry ma,” Priscilla didn’t respond to the hug but she didn’t reject it either, she just didn’t do anything, “Don’t worry about me now, I’ll be fine, no matter what decision you make, it will always be the right one,” she said.

-You talk as if your life depends on my decisions,” Nebraska pulled away to see the same fake smile on her daughter’s face.

-You’ll know in time,” Priscilla put her hand on Nebraska’s belly where she formed, “I’m sorry for all the trouble I can give you, but I want you to know I’ll never be upset by what you do, Ma. Trust you more.

Nebraska put a hand on either side of her daughter’s face and kissed her forehead. She had a bad feeling about the whole thing but didn’t want to put it into words. She was afraid her fears would come to life. Once his lips left his daughter’s forehead he joined hers.

-Then help me one more time, my daughter.

-As you wish, ma, and the next time we meet I hope to be in your arms,” her surroundings faded back to the uneven ground and the strong stench of b***d.

Liam was still there and was preparing for another attack. This time Nebraska trusted her senses, trusted her daughter, trusted her. Her attacker began to run in her direction. Nebraska did not move.

It all seemed to pass in fragments too slow for some, too fast for others. Saisen, Siran, Leoxi, Layan, Hades and several members of the pack could only watch as the huge wolf was almost on top of their queen. Hades felt his heart pounding and despite tearing more than a muscle he managed to break his grip on his body and run to his she-wolf’s defence.

Nebraska was oblivious to what was going on around her. She heard nothing, smelled nothing, just waited. She waited for the right moment. And when she felt Liam’s teeth on her head and his nauseating breath touch her skin, for a second the wolf’s body froze.

He didn’t need any more time. His daughter had given him one second and that was more than enough. In one swift movement he leaned down and, gathering momentum, opened his mouth and closed it on Liam’s neck, so hard that his jaws ached. But the depth with which it had bitten was enough for the central vein of the huge wolf to be reached and severed by the fangs.

Liam jerked, howling so loud it burst eardrums. He thrashed violently but Nebraska only squeezed harder. He would not let go, not until the wolf’s body fell limp. Liam put up a fight, not giving up even as he was running out of strength.

-I promise I’ll come back and you’ll be mine,” he growled and his legs buckled, falling forward, “I swear,” his voice was getting weaker, “I’ll… destroy… you… I’ll… destroy… you…

Liam’s pupils slowly turned white as his body crashed to the ground taking a very tired Nebraska with him.

Had he won? She didn’t know. Her energy for the moment left her only allowing her to let go of her skin and lay on her side next to the dead body of her enemy, unaware of what was going on around her. There were sounds around her, but she could not define what.

She could feel someone grab her by the skin on the back of her neck and carefully drag her onto the cool grass. It was better than being on her enemy. A warm tongue began to lick her slowly closing wounds on her back, face, paws. She smiled inwardly and made an attempt to move her head so that it fell heavily again, she was extremely tired. Her tongue stopped running over her body to move behind her ear.

Hades couldn’t stop touching his wife. He almost thought he would lose her. He lowered himself onto his stomach until he was lying next to her and nuzzled her head with his nose. He was happy that it was finally over and that neither of them were dead. Wounded yes, but alive.
