Chapter 9

Leonard's POV

Yesterday when I first smelled Amelia's sweet scent at the diner, my wolf Lance got very excited. But once I realized who it was, I was filled with anxiety. In the three years we had been apart, I hadn't found anyone that I wanted more than I wanted her. The guys kept teasing me, so I didn't have time to think of the best way to approach Amelia again. But then she had to anger and humiliate me in front of my Alpha, and treat me like some misbehaving child. And I wanted to hurt her back for that. In retrospect, I knew I had deserved it, but I certainly wasn't in the mood to be reasonable at the time.

When I saw Amelia last night being abused by those rogue assholes, I felt so much anger that I completely snapped. I chased down the guy who dared to shove his stupid little prick into my mates mouth against her will, and I completely destroyed him. Nobody was going to be able to get to piece that s**t for brains back together, not even to identify his remains. I made sure of that.

When I next saw Amelia, lying dead on the hospital bed, I almost wanted to end myself. The guilt of what I had done, or not done, to her was overwhelming. She would never have been alone in the woods with those rogues assaulting her like that. She would still be alive, and well. Loving me. Giving me pups. Being my everything. We could have been happy if I hadn't been so selfish.

Then holy s**t, suddenly Amelia was alive! She was talking on the phone with her mom, and though she may have sounded a bit tired, she actually sounded completely normal. What the actual F*U*C*K?!?!?!!!

She was trying to yank her hand out of mine, but I didn't let go. I couldn't let go, ever!

Once she was done with the phone call to her mother, she asked me to help her sit up, since I guess her injuries were still bothering her. Then Amelia finally convinced me to let go of her hand, and I was going in for a hug, but suddenly the room was filled with doctors and nurses, pushing me away from her. They needed to check her out. Sure, that was reasonable under the circumstances. But I didn't have to like it.

The rest of the evening was a bit of a blur. I was equal parts shocked, and hopeful. I was going to get another chance to do right by Amelia. Sure, I had rejected her 3 years ago, and she had reluctantly accepted. But she had truly loved me back then, and she was obviously still angry with me now. No woman is going to stay angry for that long, unless she still cares, right? I'm sure she would take me back, once she sees how sorry I am, and that I wanted to be a better man now and love her the way I should have back then. What woman could resist that? I don't expect it to be easy, but we were fated mates. We are meant to be together. So we should be able to work things out eventually.

After a while everyone was told to leave so Amelia could rest. Well, that's fine. I'd see her tomorrow. In the meantime, a bunch of us were going to head down to the dungeon. It was time to mete out some well deserved punishments.

Alpha Joshua lead the way for Alpha Zachary, Alpha Derrick, Jackson and I.

The rogue that had been caught was chained to the cold slime covered dungeon walls. The stale air reeked of putrid rogue despair. This was the guy who stabbed Amelia in the stomach, and he needed to suffer for what he did. I'd love to just kill him outright and get it over with, but that would be a kindness he didn't deserve.

"Did my sweet little pussycat die?" The a*****e asks with malicious intent, then laughs.

I try to rush over and tear him apart, but I'm being held back by Derrick and Jackson.

"Her name is Amelia, and she's not your sweet little anything!" I shout at him in fury as I struggle to get out of their grip. "You keep your hands off my mate!"

Alpha Joshua, goes over and gives the rogue a hard punch in the gut. I can tell the he struggles to breathe for a moment.

"Where is your hideout? How many rogues are in your group?" Alpha Joshua asks, his voice hard as nails. "I need to rid my borders of you and all your i***t friends if they won't be civilized."

"It's just me, Dennis, and Reggie. And you won't be able to replace either of them," He insists with an evil sneer. "They know how to avoid your pathetic border patrol, easy!"

"I already shredded one of your a*****e friends into confetti!" I retort, angrily. "The guy with the eye patch. He won't be seeing another dawn with either eye, now." Then Alpha Joshua was shouting at Derrick to get me out of there, so he and Jackson had to drag me forcibly out of the building, and refused to let me back in. "Just stop it, Leo!" Derrick commands me, and I lose all the fight thats left in me, and sag against the wall in despair.

"I just wanted that a*****e to feel even half the pain I feel right now." I whine.

"I know, and I completely understand. But we need to interrogate that rogue, not keep giving him information he doesn't have any right to know. In less than 1 minute you not only told him Amelia's name, and that she is alive which could potentially put her in danger. And then you went and told him that one of his friends is already dead! And what did we learn? Nothing of any value."

We have f****d up, man, Lance tells me. And I don't disagree.

Then Jackson is reminding us that the Alpha meeting starts in the morning, and we better head to bed soon. And that's exactly what we do, but all I can do is toss and turn all night, torn between returning to Amelia and heading back to the dungeon. The next morning I planned to head back over to the hospital to see Amelia, but Derrick said not to bother as she was getting ready to address the Alphas right after breakfast.

"What, why?" I ask, confused.

"Didn't you hear her last night? She apparently has some message directly from the moon goddess for us."

So many things happened last night, and having Amelia come back to life like that, did quite a lot to mess with my brain. Amelia could have told the whole room she was about to fly like a bird to Mars and back and I'm sure it wouldn't have registered in my brain. "Was this before or after everyone started talking about fruit salad?" Derrick shook his head at my apparent idiocy, and started to fill his plate with biscuits and gravy.

Then I went into that meeting, filled with such happiness that I'd be able to see Amelia and hear all about the message the moon goddess had for us. And then what the heck? She has a wolf now? She's pretty sassy, too. I like it!

Then Amelia/Ambrosia (oh, I'm never going to live down the fruit salad comment), started to talk about the plan the moon goddess had in store, and my heart drops into an abyss of despair. Amelia will get to chose an alpha to be her mate. I've truly lost her, forever. And then, just as I was going to slink out the door, I get called up to stand next to Amelia. I think maybe I have a small chance after all. Maybe this has been some sort of sick joke. But no, my hopes are completely dashed when I'm voluntold that I get to help Amelia to choose some alpha and be her assistant on this great task she's been given, and if I somehow redeem myself I'll get some second chance mate as a reward.

And as if I weren't hurting and humiliated enough, Ambrosia sends away everyone but the 4 unmated alphas, and starts flirting with them all, and occasionally belittling me.

Then the absolute worst thing happens. She told those 4 alphas about how I took her virginity before rejecting her. Everyone in the room was looking straight at me with unadulterated hate, and Derrick threatened me thru the mind link for more than a minute. I'm surprised when no one actually attacks me. But I know I would have deserved every single beating if they had though.

I was a despicable, immature, entitled scumbag for what I did back then. And I deserve their scorn.
