It’s Love That Blinds Him – Chapter 93
Lucia walked the streets alone. She didn’t call Lowell. She wouldn’t try to start something with him. But she wouldn’t stop anything from happening either. She would let her feelings guide her. Lucia thought of a joke from her university years. She remembered that people liked to ask her what her principles were. His answer would always be, “It depends on my mood.”
Lucia walked to a corner and sat down on one of the street chairs. She stared at the crowd of people crowding in front of her. Her eyes wandered and her thoughts took over, slipping her comfortably into a daydream. It was only when she felt someone sit down next to her that she came to her senses. Lucia turned her head to look at the person sitting next to her. When she saw who it was, she smiled.
“What a coincidence! Don’t tell me you were just passing through,” Lucia teased.
“Of course not. I actually parked the car and was waiting for you,” Lowell replied.
“Lowell, what do you want from me?” Are you trying to court me?” Lucia asked openly, staring at him.
“Would you allow me to court you? Lowell asked just as sweetly.
“What? It’s a bit difficult to answer. If I were a single woman, I wouldn’t refuse. You are a good man, and knowing that you are pursuing me will greatly satisfy my ego. Now that I am married, I should be loyal to my husband. But I’m not so sure now,” Lucia replied honestly.
“Lucia, what makes you most attractive is your vitality and honesty,” Lowell said.
“Thank you, Lowell. Honestly, I don’t I never thought it would be you who would pull me out of my hole of depression. I used to think that only those who faced difficulties became strong. But I have to admit that I had a hard time pulling myself out of this crisis. I was so trapped in my own little world, like some kind of orphaned animal. I wanted to crawl back to my master and beg for his forgiveness. But all he did was look at me as if I were a wanderer. How pathetic of me!” It was rare for Lucia to be so critical of herself.
“If someone doesn’t want to leave their darkness, they won’t, no matter how much help is offered. You have to want to free yourself first,” Lowell said lightly.
“Lowell, would you mind telling me a little about yourself?” Lucia asked, cleverly changing the subject.
“Me? Well, if I told you I was an orphan like you, would you believe me?” Lowell said calmly,
Lucia raised her eyebrows in surprise. She would never have guessed he was an orphan. He behaved as if he had been raised as a gentleman, not to mention he had excellent taste in fashion. She chose to remain silent and just waited for him to continue.
“My mother left me on the steps of an orphanage just hours after I was born. I guess I was luckier than some of the other children who were left behind. I was found before I was freeze to death or starve to death. For an orphan, I had a pretty easy time growing up. When I was six, I went to Europe to live with my foster family. Oh, my adoptive father is a Latin. I almost forgot to add that part. He is very rich and very good at what he does. I learned everything I know from him and inherited more than enough to live on comfortably. So, there you have it. This is the story of how I became the person you see today.” Lowell spoke so calmly about his past that it was almost hypnotizing.
Lucia listened attentively. She never interrupted him. Having grown up an orphan herself, she knew that living in an orphanage was not easy. It wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, and people on the outside certainly didn’t know what was going on behind closed doors. But at least she had a place to stay. If she wanted something more, she had to work alone. No matter how wonderful a foster family was, the orphans still lacked a sense of security and belonging. After all, the family wasn’t theirs.
She knew it was the same for Catherine. Lucia could empathize with Kathryn on a personal level. Perhaps that was why she loved him so much; they had something very personal in common. When it came to Lowell, she didn’t doubt what he said. She didn’t think it was like him to tell a story, just to get his sympathy.
Lowell had spoken about his past in a short and concise manner. Only someone who had shared a childhood like his would understand this short summary.
“What? You don’t believe me?” Lowell asked, his voice once again laced with good humor. “Alright then, let me tell you something else then.” He raised his hand and waved it teasingly in front of Lucia’s face.
“No, no. That won’t be necessary. I believe you,” Lucia said sourly, pushing his hand away.
When her hand touched hers, Lowell curled his fingers over hers. Lucia tried to free herself from his grip, but Lowell held her held tightly. She quickly stopped struggling and looked up into his eyes.
“Lucia, let me take care of you,” Lowell said seriously.
Lucie said nothing. She just kept her eyes fixed on him. They remained silent a moment more, then slowly, Lowell let go of her hand. Carefully, almost dreamlike, Lowell cupped her cheek and kissed her. For a moment, Lucia froze, but she didn’t push him away. Her emotions were so mixed that she didn’t even know if she wanted to stop him or not.
Lowell didn’t press the k**s further. He just held the contact gently on her lips as if he was waiting to see if she would accept his advances When Lucia didn’t reject his k**s, he kissed her harder. He carefully moved his other hand so he could place it on her waist. It was only when the tip of Lowell’s tongue brushed her lips that Lucia pushed him away. That seemed to be the thing that brought her back to her senses. Lowell didn’t try to k**s her again, but he kept his hand on her waist.
“You…I…” Lucia tried to speak but she was too agitated.
“Would you refuse my advances, Lucia? Lowell asked seriously.
“I…” Lucia stammered, unable to answer. She just looked around nervously, like a trapped animal.
“Let me take you home,” Lowell said, quickly changing the subject.
He let go of her and stood up. Lucia followed him, staying a step behind him. As the two walked down the street, Lucia glanced to the side and saw Lowell’s shadow. She was struck by the strangest, most random thought. She couldn’t help but think that Lowell was a lonely man.
” What is happening to me? Why would I think that? Is it because I feel sorry for him after hearing his story? Or maybe I’m starting to allow myself to have fun now that Malcolm is out of the picture? Or maybe I’m trying to get back at Malcolm for everything he did to me. Lucia slowly shook her head. His mind was in disarray. And she was angry.
Heat suddenly spread through his cold hand, seeming to travel up his arm. She looked down at her hand, surprised to replace Lowell’s hand covering it. She looked up at him. He always walked in front of her. Lucia didn’t remove her hand.
There was something strange between the two of them tonight. Something she couldn’t quite describe. She didn’t understand it, but that wasn’t a bad thing. As they walked under the street lights, they cast long, lonely shadows on the ground. In an indescribable way, they looked like a perfect match.
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at the parking lot. Lucia quickly let go of Lowell’s hand, opened the car door and got in. Lowell paused for a moment before climbing inside. He looked down at his hand as if it wasn’t part of his body. Then, with a small nod, he got into the driver’s seat and started the car. The two did not speak.
Lucia shivered slightly as the night air began to bite through her clothes. She closed the window. Lowell looked at Lucia out of the corner of his eye. When he saw her close her window, he closed the driver’s side window and turned on the air heater.
“You don’t like being cold, do you?” Lowell asked casually.
“I don’t. I hate winter. My hands and feet are always cold. It always starts around this time of year. It happens every year without fail,” Lucia said quickly.
She hated the cold, wet southern winter. Without the necessary heating, the cold could easily seep into the bones and freeze a person from the inside out. Lucia felt that no matter how much clothing she put on, she would always be cold. Even though the wind wasn’t as biting as in the north, it still made her shiver like a leaf in the wind. If she didn’t have an electric blanket or heat source at night, she was convinced her toes would freeze right away.
Winter was a horrible season. Lucia hated it with every fiber of her being.
Lowell said nothing. He gripped the steering wheel with one hand, balancing it to keep the car upright, and leaned over to take her hand with the other. His hand was warm. So hot it felt like he was melting the ice in his bones with just his touch. He held his hand until it no longer resembled that of a corpse.
“Dress warmer next time,” Lowell said softly.
“Very good,” Lucia replied.
Then they were silent again. Lucia didn’t know what to say. Nothing she came up with seemed interesting enough to talk about. She thought it might be better to sit quietly and look out the window at the passing scenery. The journey to the villa district was not long. They got there in a few minutes. Lowell slowed the car, pulled over to the side of the road, and pouted in thought.
Lucia gave him a grateful smile as she opened the car door. She was about to leave when Lowell stopped her by grabbing her arm. She looked at him with confusion. She had no idea what he meant or did.
“Lucia, I want to ask you to think carefully about what I said. Don’t listen to your head; listen to your heart,” Lowell seriously, looking at her the whole time.
Lucie did not answer. She stared at him for a moment or two before shaking his hand and getting out of the car. Lowell sat quietly in his car, watching Lucia as she entered the estate. He stayed where he was, parked on the side of the road, until he could no longer see her. Only then did he start the car and leave.
” Lucy! Someone brought you back! I saw the car!” Catherine said unexpectedly.
Lucia was so deep in thought about what had happened that Catherine’s sudden, loud voice scared her. She gasped in surprise and pressed her hand against her chest as her heart began to hammer wildly. When she laid eyes on Kathryn, she breathed a sigh of relief, reached out and gave Kathryn an angry little poke on the forehead. “What
the Are you awake at this hour? Lucia asked, regulating her breathing.
“You’re avoiding my question, Lucia. Catherine laughed.
“What are you doing spying on others, young lady?” Lucia said helplessly, trying to defend.
What else could she say? How could she tell a 17 year old girl that she wasn’t yet divorced and that she was going to have an affair? Teenagers these days were really mature for their age. Lucia looked into Kathryn’s bright eyes and sighed softly. When she was Catherine’s age, she had no idea what love was.
“Okay, do as you wish. I’ll question you tomorrow,” Catherine said with a wave of her hand. For now, she was letting Lucia off the hook.
“Are you serious?”
Lucia laughed and motioned for Catherine to walk with her. In good spirits, and with the subject temporarily forgotten, they both returned home. After they both said goodnight, Lucia went to her room. She’s just closed the door when her phone rings. He only managed to ring twice before dying. Lucia didn’t even have a chance to check the caller’s identity.
Lucia took her phone out of her pocket, glanced at it, and threw it on her bed. With another sigh, she headed to the bathroom. There would be no point charging it now. It would not show the caller ID in any way. If it was something important, whoever it was would call her back later.
Sometimes the thing people missed wasn’t necessarily what they wanted.
She was tired after her busy day and the last few days had left her emotionally exhausted. Lucia took a quick shower and collapsed onto her bed. She still wanted to dry her hair, but she fell asleep before she even had the chance. As she slept, her passive face would occasionally crease into a frown, and she had the slightest aura of unease hovering over her.
