The news of Elisabeth’s pregnancy shocked me; it was an unpredictable situation that only complicated things more.

The doctor instructed me to care for my wife and our unborn pup. Everything else could wait.

I gathered the rogues and informed them that we should keep a low profile for a while until Blake and his pack put the last incident on the cliff at the back of their minds and relaxed, loosening the safety measures they had taken.

It was an acceptable excuse, and everyone agreed to postpone any new attacks for a while.

I focused my attention on my sweetheart and our pup. Ellie deserved the best of care. I spoke with the motel owners and took over all my wife’s duties and responsibilities.

At first, it wasn’t easy to adjust to Ellie’s work. I had never worked a day in my life before.

And that was when I realised how hard Ellie had worked all these years. How could I do that to her? And she never complained, not even once.

I had no right to complain either. I did everything the way she did it and asked the cook to teach me how to cook some of my wife’s favourite nutritious soups.

I had nothing else on my mind except the well-being of my wife and pup. And without realising it, I found I was happier and more relaxed.

I even enjoyed my work if that was ever possible.

I had just returned from work and brought some chicken soup Ellie had been craving the previous night. I was so proud of myself for being able to make it as the cook instructed me and then praised my abilities.

I entered the room to replace my wife in bed. Seeing her and her round tummy brought tears to my eyes; I would finally have a family of my own. My baby boy and wife were the most important people in my life.

I placed the bowl of soup on the side table and kissed my beauty, asking about her day.

I loved to hear her sweet voice describe how my unborn son fussed in her tummy.

And then suddenly, everything changed with one phone call.

I hugged and kissed my wife when I got a call from Ace.

What could have happened to make him call me at that hour?

“Baby, I am sorry, I have to take this call,” I said, and left the room in a hurry.

“Ace? Why are you calling me so late? I am home with Elisabeth. Couldn’t this wait until tomorrow?”

I knew I sounded rude to my friend but I wanted nothing to disturb Ellie’s peace of mind.

“Can you stop preaching to me and let me tell you what happened tonight Drake?” Ace was impatient on the phone, and that unsettled me.

“Ace, is it that serious?” It was my turn to become impatient.

“Do you know where I’ve been up until now, my dear friend?” Ace replied.

“Ace, for heaven’s sake, spill the beans. I don’t have much time. Ellie is waiting for me back in our room,” I snapped at him.

“I was at your brother’s mating ceremony with his precious wife, man. And do you know who that wife of his is? Your wife’s baby sister, Natalia. She showed up out of nowhere and married your brother.”

Ice filled my veins at Ace’s words. What did he say?

“What do you mean Blake married Elizabeth’s sister, Ace? He did what? A mating ceremony? Did he mark her as his chosen mate and Luna tonight? s**t, man, that ruins everything.

If that spoiled brat is back, that means that Natalia will claim the Alpha position of the Moon Howeler’s pack. s**t, Ace. We are fu.cked, man! Blake would do everything to protect Natalia. And it will be harder for us to attack my brother’s pack. He will secure the territory after the surprise attack on the cliff.”

“Don’t worry, man. I’ve got you covered. I met with one of the chicks your brother banged before bringing Natalia to the pack, and she is not pleased with how things turned out. Her name is Emma; she is one of the pack doctors.

I promised to help her get Blake back if she helps us take Natalia away from your brother. I had to tell her a lie about my dear lovestruck friend who became depressed after Natalia married your brother to convince her to help me. Oh, and I told her my name is Drake just so you know,” Ace chuckled, sounding proud of his doings.

“Who the hell is this woman called Emma, Ace? How can you trust her enough to tell her about our plans? What? You lied to her about your identity and did not reveal our plans? Did you fake a desperate love disappointment? Why did you use my first name, man? What if Blake replaces out?”

Fu.ck! Everything was a mess!

How was I supposed to deal with the news Ace had dropped on me?

s**t! Elisabeth should never replace out that her sister showed up. That would complicate things between us again.

“Drake?”

My wife’s voice made me turn back. She was holding the doorknob, ready to fall.

Fuc.k! I had left the door open. Did Elisabeth hear my conversation with Ace?

I had no time to think about that. I rushed and caught my wife’s collapsing body before she hit the ground.

I was in my bed, lying down per the doctor’s orders. I could still not believe that I had almost lost my pup without knowing I was pregnant.

When I woke up at the hospital that night and found Drake by my side crying like a baby, I thought I had a terminal disease. When the doctor told me the news, I was dumbfounded.

A baby! We were going to have a baby. Our baby!

I looked at Drake, confused, and the only thing he did was hold me in his arms and apologise for not being there when I needed him the most.

And that was when I realised all my suspicions about my husband having an affair were wrong. Something else had kept Drake away from home last month.

I forgot how angry I was with him and his behaviour and decided to take things slowly with Drake. Maybe something else was bothering him, and he needed time alone.

“I promise to keep you and our baby safe, Elisabeth. I will not allow anything like this to happen again,” he promised, his eyes full of tears, remorse in his voice.

When we left the hospital, a new Drake entered our house. I never saw my husband work harder. He took over all my responsibilities at the motel and soon, he was doing my work like a professional, and when he came home at night, he cleaned the house and cooked.

He had even stopped making those suspicious calls at night. My husband reminded me of when we first eloped and ran away to Mexico City. He was loving and caring and never left my side.

Two months had passed, and I was in the second trimester of my pregnancy. My baby bump was round, and I could feel my pup moving.

The door opening made me turn, and Drake entered the room, holding a bowl of chicken soup. I smiled. I told him I had been craving chicken soup the night before, and he cooked it for me.

“Hey baby, how are you feeling?” he placed the soup on the side table and kissed me.

“I feel much better, honey. Your son has been uneasy today, moving around and kicking my stomach all day. I guess there won’t be enough space for him in my womb soon. He has grown a lot. Don’t forget that I am almost five months along; only one month to go,” I reminded a grinning Drake.

That was when Drake’s phone rang and after looking at the screen, I saw my husband’s expression change. He frowned, and the smile disappeared from his handsome face.

“Baby, I am sorry. I have to take this call,” he said, leaving the room in a rush, forgetting to close the door.

“Amy, what is it? Is Drake in any trouble? Has Gunner told you anything?” I tried asking my wolf.

“No, Ellie. But let’s replace out. Do you think you can get up and move closer to the door, sweetie?”

“Yes, I think I can manage,” I replied and slowly sat up on the bed. I stood up, holding my baby bump and walked to the door.

“What do you mean Blake married Elizabeth’s sister, Ace? He did what? A mating ceremony? Did he mark her as his chosen mate and Luna tonight? s**t, man, that ruins everything.

Ace, on the other side of the line, must have told my husband about Emma because Drake replied,

Drake tried to keep his voice low, but Amy heard everything.

So, that was Drake’s plan. He wanted to take my father’s Alpha position and attack Blake’s pack. For what? To take revenge because of something we were at fault for from the beginning. What was Drake thinking?

I felt my head spinning and held on to the doorknob to avoid falling and risking my baby.

“Drake?” I cried, and he turned to me, his face pale. He immediately dropped the phone and rushed to my side, holding me in his arms before I lost consciousness.

I opened my eyes to replace myself on the bed, Drake wiping my face with a wet cloth. He had a pained expression, and tears ran down his face.

“Baby, why did you get up from bed? Why didn’t you call me if you needed something?” his cracked voice didn’t manage to calm me down.

“Drake, what on earth are you trying to do? Kill yourself and leave me and our pup alone and unprotected in this world? Do you know what Blake will do to you if he replaces out what you are planning?”

I pushed him back and placed both hands on my swollen tummy, tears rolling down my face.

“Have you realised that you have a family to protect Drake? Who told you I wanted my father’s position as the firstborn? I made my choice ten years ago when I rejected Blake and followed you, leaving all my loved ones behind, defending our love. All I ever needed was for you to love me, and I never complained about our living situation.

Why can’t you be pleased with what we have, Drake? Our baby needs us; your son will need his father by his side while growing up. Why are you endangering what we have? Is the Alpha position worth losing our baby and me?”

“Elisabeth, baby, it’s not what you think. And why would I lose you and our baby?” he whispered, his face pale.

“Because if you continue with your plans, I am not going to stay with you, not for a single minute. I will walk away from you, and you will never replace me. I promise,” I said, and Drake paled even more.

What?” he whispered; shock evident on his face.

“I will leave you, Drake, period,” I replied coldly and turned my face away, not looking at my husband. I couldn’t afford him to see the pain in my eyes at my last words.
