Chapter 39: The Fracture of Family

Chapter 39: The Fracture of Family Melissa's POV

Geraint officially joined the Pack, diligently attending to his duties at his workstation. However, this did not mean that Sebastian fully trusted him; instead, he had begun to keep a watchful eye on him.

Debra had not yet left the castle; she was still clinging to her last desperate attempts. Sadly, Sebastian had not rescinded his order exiling Vince to the wastelands.

I remained silent about these matters, leaving the room with no expectations.

Before lunch, we even arranged a friendly meeting with Debra, but Sebastian treated it merely as another task of the day. Unsure of how to refuse, I could only agree to accompany him.

As we stepped out, Sebastian earnestly comforted me: "As long as my stepmother is present, you should try to remain silent."

He seemed to understand my feelings very well, kissing the back of my hand tenderly before moving to my neck.

Whether in public or in private, our dark Alpha always conveyed one message to everyone: he could not be without me, which filled me with a sense of security.

"I'm thinking about where I should mark you. Here, here... or here? Soon everyone will see my mark and know you're mine," he said, kissing every part of my body.

I smiled softly, gently taking his hand away and responding reassuringly.

"Sebastian, that's enough! We still have training in a bit, so don't rush things."

"Every time you see my stepmother and brothers, you end up feeling down. If something's wrong, I hope you'll share it with me."

Seeing the seriousness in his expression, I couldn't help but laugh. I cupped his face, doing my best to mimic his serious look in return.

"I was just wondering how our great Alpha managed to break free from such a family environment."

I was right in saying that. I was certain that it hadn't been easy for Sebastian to come this far.

"Melissa, my love! You're a strong woman, and I appreciate your thoughts. But my life has nothing to do with them. Years ago, the council of elders gave me Alpha training, guiding me to become a leader among wolves. Yet, out of all the things they taught me, not a single lesson covered how to handle a woman-that's why I'm so captivated by you now."

Hearing his words, I couldn't help but laugh.

"It's pretty clear that you like independent women."

"No, you're just an exception. Rachel is nothing like you, and I don't want you to be affected by that." Sebastian quickly clarified, thinking I still cared about Rachel's presence.

As we playfully bantered our way to the dining hall, Debra had brought Vince and Shakti along, in addition to our familiar friends.

"What are you two doing here?" Sebastian's displeasure was evident upon seeing them.

"We're just here to see Mother. We're parting ways next month; do you really want to stop. us from spending our limited time together?" Vince said, his eyes darting away, unable to meet Sebastian's gaze.

He sat next to Debra, who had taken the seat that should have belonged to Sebastian.

The atmosphere was hard for me to accept; I couldn't understand why I couldn't quietly enjoy my meal in the room by myself.

"How's your house hunting going?"

The atmosphere at the dining table was extremely awkward. Sebastian seemed completely oblivious to it as he turned to Debra, broaching the topic they least wanted to discuss.

"We're still... looking for a suitable place," Debra replied, her tone tinged with sadness, realizing that Sebastian truly wouldn't allow her to return to the North.

She wanted to seek some support and affirmation from her son, but Vince was too afraid to speak up. After a long silence, he finally thought of something to say.

"Aren't you keeping Mother in the castle just to have us attend the engagement ceremony, to show everyone that this woman has earned everyone's approval?"

He couldn't understand why Sebastian would choose me over those young, beautiful maidens. Even because of my presence, he had directly given up the search for Rachel. "The elders say you're with a secondhand... a marked woman, destroying the North. They even claim she used all sorts of means to win your favor to escape a hard life." Hearing these ridiculous comments, I smiled indifferently, not taking them to heart at all.

"Everyone has doubted Melissa's intentions. But tell me, has there ever been a woman by my side whose motives weren't questioned? Yet, up to now, when have you ever seen her pose a threat to me or to the North? On the contrary, it's your actions that have made me feel there's something else at play. So I can't pretend as if nothing has happened. There are issues between the North and the Meadows. She was once the Luna of the West and did an excellent job. Now, as the Luna of the North, she will do just as well." Sebastian's tone was calm, yet left no room for anyone present to question him.

"But you

"But don't know if she'll just run away like Rachel did!"

I silently cursed, thinking what an idiot Vince was; Sebastian probably didn't want to hear a word he'd just said.

"I suggest you disappear from my sight right now."

Sebastian was visibly angry, his voice lowered menacingly.

"But I didn't say anything..." Vince stammered, shrinking behind Debra.

"Alright, alright! Let's just get something to cat," Debra quickly intervened, realizing her son's words had greatly displeased the Alpha. "Apologize! Vince! Apologize now!"

Debra spoke nervously, but the foolish idiot refused, lowering his head in silence.

Standing up, Sebastian approached Vince's seat.

"Alpha! Please don't..." Before Debra could finish her plea, Vince was lifted by the scruff of his collar.

"No! Alpha, please!" Debra's voice was tinged with desperation as she cried out for her son.

But Sebastian had no intention of letting him go; he slammed Vince against the wall and landed a punch squarely on his face.

Seeing Vince bleed made everyone present go pale.

Debra suddenly realized something and fell to her knees before me.

"Melissa, please! I beg you! Save him! Can you do something?"

I didn't want to

intervene, knowing that all of this had started because Vince had spoken hurtful words to me. But I also understood that to prevent the situation from escalating further, I had to act. "Sebastian, stop! Please, stop!" I quickly stepped in to hold him back.

"Maybe

we won't have a chance to eat together, and you don't need to attend my engagement ceremony or wedding."

I silently thanked the Moon Goddess for allowing me to intervene just in time.

"Alright, Mom, Vince."

I took a deep breath, taking the lead to make peace.

"You are always part of our family, whether Vince is willing to accept that or not-that's undeniable. Soon, I will become Luna and will govern the North alongside Alpha. I will never commit any act of betrayal. I don't care about others' opinions, but I do hope you can be the first to accept my place here."

Smiling as I spoke these thoughts, I knew I needed to clarify this to them to ensure a good relationship between Debra and us, which would be beneficial for the North.
