Salute To The General
Chapter 2068

Chapter 2068

Nathan's low chuckle from behind his mask. "You speak too highly of me, Mr. Valois."

Nathan's voice was normally deeper but because it was obstructed by the mask, it sounded different to others.

So none of the Davier family members could recognize that the Chief Military Governor's voice actually belonged to their mortal enemy, Nathan. Valois chuckled along as he spoke, "No, no, you're more than worthy of these words. We're extremely flattered that you're here.

"Chief Military Governor, my brother has prepared a feast and is awaiting your arrival.

Please head this way."

Nathan spoke emotionlessly, "Thank you." Nathan, Sage, and the Felidae Battalion soldiers trailed behind Valois and the Davier household members. Together, the two parties stepped foot into the Davier home.

They walked past the antique vermilion gate, through the lush courtyard, and finally, into the hall.

Just as they entered, Clifford approached them along with a few of his men. He hurried towards them and greeted, "Chief Military Governor, you came all this way, yet I wasn't able to greet you at the door. I hope you forgive my ill-manners.”

Nathan chuckled, "I should apologize for barging"

The men laughed aloud.

"Chief Military Governor." Clifford spoke in a relaxed manner, "Let's drop the formalities.

Come, I've asked my family to prepare some wine. Let's sit down and enjoy ourselves."

Nathan agreed, "Please lead the way!"

Everyone headed over to the dining hall.

The table was huge and round. Clifford naturally sat on the host's seat whilst Nathan headed for the seat for the most honored guest.

The other Davier family members sat down accordingly to their familial status.

But what was shocking was that the Daviers had not arranged a seat for Sage at all.

That was not a negligence.

Sage was only a mere major general, and his existence meant nothing to Clifford. But Sage held the position of office manager in the Headquarters of the Chief Military Governor. He was still the right-hand man of the Chief Military Governor.

The Daviers would never resort to such a lowly mistake.

Even if it were a careless mistake, they could still add a chair to resolve the situation...

However, the Daviers did not resolve the issue. It was clear that this humiliation towards Sage was deliberate.

It turned out that Sage had made a grave mistake. Clifford had ordered him to gift the painting to the Chief Military Governor. Instead of doing what he was told, Sage had gifted it to General Nathan which angered the Davier family.

That was one of the reasons Clifford invited the Chief Military Governor for dinner. Not only was it to discuss marriage and alliance, but also to punish Sage.

Nathan noticed Sage was not given

a seat and turned cold immediately. He challenged, "Mr. Davier, my subordinate, General Tomlinson does not have a seat. Why is that? Was it unintentional or are you hinting that my subordinate is unworthy of being here?"

Upon hearing this, Clifford threw a glance at Sage before saying, "Chief Military Governor, with all due respect, this person is not welcome as our guest. That's why we haven't reserve a seat for him.

"Moreover, I don't think he deserves to be your right-hand man."

Sage saw red at Clifford's words. Nevertheless, he coiled his fists, restraining himself from grabbing the vile man.

After all, this was the Cab Secretary who he was dealing with. This wasn't someone he could challenge.

Sneering laughter rumbled from Nathan. "And what makes you say that, Mr. Davier?"

Clifford jumped at the chance to

met

explain everything. He told him that Sage had disobeyed orders and gifted the painting to General Nathan instead. Clifford explained how the painting was originally meant to be gifted to the Chief Military Governor. All in all, Clifford hoped the story riled Nathan enough to punish Sage.

After explaining the incident, Clifford pointed at Sage. He angrily said, "This man has no respect for our family. He does not take our gift, or you seriously. I implore you to punish him for the mistake he has made."

Nathan chuckled shallowly. "Mr. Clifford, I'm afraid you're mistaken.

"That was... Wyland Huck's painting, right? I had Sage gift it to General Nathan a long time ago. But Nathan somehow lost it and it was sold to the black market.

"So when you gifted it to me, I told Sage to return it to Nathan.

"Therefore, this fuss about Sage gifting the painting to Nathan... was just to carry out my order.

"Mr. Davier, did my actions upset you? If it bothers you that much, then I'll retrieve the painting from General Nathan and have it returned to you." What? The Chief Military Governor intentionally gifted the painting to General Nathan?

Clifford and the others were shocked at the Chief Military Governor's words.

The Daviers slumped anxiously, some even twitched uncomfortably at the thought of how close-knit the Chief Military Governor seemed with their mortal enemy, Nathan.

That would be a huge disadvantage for their family!
