Salute To The General -
Chapter 2237
Led by Amos, Nathan and the others soon arrived at a village not too far away from the city.
They were immediately reminded of the eighties because almost all the houses there looked old and somewhat dilapidated. On top of that, the alleys in the village were quite narrow.
When the group reached the fifth floor of an apartment, Amos took out his keys but hesitated to open the door. "My place is rented. It only has two bedrooms and a living room, so it's rather cramped. It's also a little messy since I'm not the most organized person. I hope you guys don't mind."
Nathan chuckled before responding,
"Nonsense! We're like brothers, and brothers aren't supposed to be picky over such trivial things. Now open that door and introduce us to your girlfriend."
"Now that you mentioned it, I just realized that none of us here are married except for General! Well, you've found yourself a girlfriend, Amos, you can bet that we're all green with envy!" chimed in Colin. Amos could not help but blush every time Colin and the others talked about his girlfriend, so they could tell just how happy the man was.
After entering the house, Nathan and the others realized that it was exactly like how Amos described it. Not only was it cramped and slightly messy, but the furniture was also old and cheap-looking. Amos called out for his girlfriend and even checked the rooms to replace her but to no avail. "That's weird. Amelia doesn't seem to be home. Why don't you guys take a seat first? I'll go get you tea and prepare some food."
However, Colin quickly stopped Amos before the man could enter the kitchen. "Don't worry about the food. We'll take care of it. All you have to do is spend some chatting with General."
With that, Colin gestured for the Elite Eight to follow him into the kitchen.
Some of them made tea while others prepared ingredients for cooking.
Those who could not help in the kitchen even took the initiative to clean up Amos' house.
Since they all treated Amos like family, those men were more than willing to help out.
Even though Amos did not say anything about it, he was very much moved by their actions. "How have you been all these years, General?" inquired Amos to Nathan.
"I'm sure you know what it's like in the army. I consider myself extremely fortunate that I'm still breathing instead of getting killed on the battlefield. That's the best a military man can hope for, right?" Nodding, Amos subconsciously touched his left leg, which got hit by a bullet during a major military operation with the North Army. He was forced to retire after the incident made him a cripple. Aftertakinga sip of his tea, Nathan continued, "By the way, things were rather messy in the North Army when you were discharged. That's why I forgot to set you up with a decent job. But I do remember instructing Colin to give you preferential treatment in terms of veterans compensation and medical assistance for your disability. You should've received around two million, so why do you live so frugally?" Amos smiled bitterly before replying, "Because my girlfriend is sick."
Then, the man proceeded to tell Nathan the whole story.
It turned out that Amos fell in love with a woman named Amelia Bullock before he enlisted in the army.
Amelia rejected Amos because she was quite a beauty, and she thought she could replace
someone better.
Heartbroken, Amos then decided to join the army.
After he retired from service because of his injury, Amos bumped into Amelia one day but realized that she was severely ill.
She had become blind due to a complication with her eyes.
Amos decided to take care of Amelia since he was still in love with her. Not long after that, she finally agreed to be his girlfriend.
Ever since then, Amos had spent a fortune trying to cure Amelia.
Not only did he use up the two million he had received from the army, but he also borrowed money from friends and relatives. He even borrowed from loan sharks in order to scrape up enough cash so that he could afford Amelia's cornea replacement surgery and help her regain her eyesight.
