Salute To The General -
Chapter 2709
Despite that interlude during Nathan's inauguration ceremony, the ceremony had still proceeded rather smoothly.
What had happened had also given Nathan an opportunity to display his strong leadership skills, and everyone was filled with confidence in their new president. After the inauguration ceremony, Nathan returned to the White House.
The moment he sat down in his office chair, he received a phone call from Gammon.
Nathan picked up and answered with a smile, "Hello, Mr. Gammon."
"Congratulations, Mr. Cross!" Gammon's hearty voice sounded through the phone.
The man had called to offer his well wishes to Nathan.
After exchanging a few words of pleasantries, Gammon took the opportunity to invite Nathan to Remdik.
In fact, according to conventional practices, after a new president assumed office, his priority would be to visit every state before visiting foreign countries.
Usually, the first destination would be the country's most important political ally.
As such, Nathan accepted Gammon's invite readily.
Right after the call with Gammon ended, Nathan received a call from Adolf, the President of Valmora.
Similarly, Adolf had called to congratulate Nathan and had also extended an invitation for him to visit Valmora.
Nathan smiled and agreed to make arrangements for that.
Subsequently, leaders from other political allies of Eurasia also called to congratulate the man.
After he answered phone calls for more than an hour, the phone finally stopped ringing, which allowed him to take a breather.
Just then, Colin entered the room with a cup of freshly-brewed coffee for Nathan.
The President took a sip of the coffee before switching on the television.
To his surprise, he saw Max appearing on an international news channel.
It seemed that Max was holding an emergency press conference and was proclaiming to a bunch of reporters that neither Ariarica nor the Eight-Nation Alliance was involved in the attempted attack made on Nathan at the inauguration ceremony.
He even asserted that there was a high chance that Nathan had orchestrated the attack himself in order to garner more support from the citizens of Eurasia.
When Colin saw that, he exclaimed furiously, "That son of a b*tch! Not only did he lie blatantly, he even turned the tables on us, saying that we orchestrated the attack!"
Nathan remained composed as he replied, "Well, a leopard doesn't change its spots. A despicable person will always remain as one. It's within my expectations that he will act so shamelessly. Besides, don't we already know what those people were made of?" Knock! Knock!
Hearing the knock on his door, Nathan answered placidly, "Come in."
The person who opened the door was none other than the Cabinet secretary, Zion.
When the man walked into the room, he reported, "President Cross, not only did Ariarica disassociate themselves from the incident, Max even turned the tables on us!"
Pointing at the television, Nathan replied, "I've already seen the news."
Burning with anger, Zion thundered, "I can't believe how shameless those people are! They dared to do it but got no guts to own up to it. Not only that, they even accused us of it!"
Just then, someone knocked on the door again.
This time, it was Sage who was dressed in his military uniform.
He had arrived to update Nathan on the progress of the investigation of the attack. "President Cross, we have already found out who the people involved in the attack are," he said when he entered the room. "They are from Ariarica and the other seven nations. However, those people do not belong to the authorities. They are just ordinary citizens and are not linked to the government at all. It's likely that the Eight-Nation Alliance recruited them as part of a death squad to make the assassination attempt. That way, even if the attackers failed, it would be easy for the alliance to disassociate themselves from the incident."
"Even though we don't have concrete evidence, we're not stupid," Zion said. "Given that those attackers were from the eight nations that make up the Eight-Nation Alliance, there's no way I'd believe that they were not involved in it. President Cross, I don't think we can let the matter slide just like that."
After a few moments of silence, Nathan said slowly, "Since I have just taken office, it wouldn't be a good idea to do something too drastic. Let's wait for a better time. Anyway, we have plenty of opportunities to deal with them in the future."
As that was Nathan's wish, Zion and the others had no choice but to agree.
Just then, a staff member of the White House entered after knocking on the door. Sounding a little anxious, he reported, "President Cross, President Bryon of Ariarica is on the line. It seems that he wants to congratulate you and also invite you to Ariarica. Should I divert the call to your office?"
Nathan glanced at the television screen, which was still showing the same news of Max talking before he replied, "There's no need for that. Help me turn down his invite. Just say that this is not a suitable time for me to visit their country." "Understood!" the staff answered at once.
