The Alpha Mafia King -
Chapter 40
“Callisto,” Alonso said with a pause, turning around to fix his eyes on the man. Rayleigh had heard about what Callisto had done to Alonso as a boy. She decided to let them talk privately. She moved along to the next available alpha, and Alonso thought it was typical of her.
“It’s been ages,” responded Callisto. “I would have offered to hug you, but I know better.”
Alonso imagined them wrapping their arms around each other, and the thought of them ripping each other apart with their claws from behind crossed his mind.
“What do you want, Callisto?” Alonso asked, impatiently but calmly as well.
“I heard that one of my boys did the Lord’s work at your Casino.”
“And what exactly do you mean by that?”
“The Lord saves people, and Jamie saved your mate,” replied Callisto, taking off his glasses to wipe them. “I was hoping that on such grounds, we could become allies.”
Alonso almost scoffed out loud.
“Well, I am sure that I’ll express my gratitude and goodwill to Jamie appropriately for his actions. I wouldn’t say that it doesn’t leave me curious, though, that Jamie was spying on my Casino.”
“He is indeed frequenting your Casino, and that is because I have him looking around for a certain someone.”
Alonso was surprised.
“Is it the same person that tried to kill my mate?”
“Unfortunately, no,” Callisto said, donning his glasses. “It happened out of pure chance, but I am glad that Jamie had been there.”
“So, who were you looking for?” Alonso pressed on, although he felt disappointed.
“I’m not allowed to say,” Callisto said. Alonso knew that even if Callisto was lying, there was no way he would be able to tell. The man’s heartbeat was as steady as a working clock’s ticking. Up ahead, he could see Mazza coming down towards them.
“It would help if you mentioned who it was,” said Alonso. “I could easily identify the person for you. Why do you think you’ll replace this person in my casino?”
“Most powerful people come to your Casino to unwind,” Callisto said. “It has everything from games to women. I wouldn’t say that I know for sure that the target will come, but I have to start my search from somewhere.”
“And what of Jamie’s presence?” Alonso asked, glad to see Mazza only a few steps away now. “Will indicate that the target is yet to be found?”
“Exactly,” Callisto said.
“Well, maybe you should try out other places, right?”
“You are right. Maybe I got it all wrong, and maybe I should have Jamie search elsewhere, but also, maybe if Jamie had stopped, then maybe your mate would have been dead. I guess what I’m saying is that it wouldn’t hurt if we extended our search for just a few more days.”
“Alonso, the King wants to see you immediately!” Mazza said. “Go, I’ll keep an old foe company.”
“Mazza, you haven’t aged a day since I last saw you!” Callisto said with a lopsided grin. Alonso left them to go and replace the king. He could hear Mazza laughing and talking without any form of hostility in his voice. It was charming how Mazza could keep his cool even in the face of a foe.
Alonso stood just outside the throne room, and there the King was with his son, Collins, talking animatedly. The boy seemed frustrated, and so was his father. He wondered what the king wanted him for this time around.
“Let him through!” the King ordered in annoyance, and the guards immediately regretted trying to stop Alonso from coming in.
“You sent for me,” Alonso said, noting that the king was doing his best to regain his earlier composure.
“Leave us,” he said to his son, and the boy’s eyes widened in surprise.
“But father! I’m your special advisor,” Collins retorted.
“And I’m the king. I won’t hesitate to have you locked up if I repeat myself!”
“He’s your son,” Alonso said, almost regretting why he interfered because the king gave him a stern look.
“I know,” said the King wearily, and his looks softened. “I need your help in dealing with something. You’re a king within your rights. A mafia King, and only you can help me with this little situation I have going on.”
“What situation is that?” Alonso asked, wondering what the hell the King meant.
“I’m looking to enlarge my territory, Alonso,” the King began, evenly toned. “I want to become the next president of Russia, and to do that, I need your help in committing a small act of electoral fraud now and then until the final vote is announced.”
“You want to rule Russia?” Alonso asked, bewildered by the man’s request, and the King nodded. “Very well then; I’ll let you know if I can help you in a few days. However, even if I decide to get involved, you should know that things like these need months of careful planning. You’ll need resources for journalists, campaign money for bribery, and all that, not to mention that it will cost you because I will need something tangible in return.”
“I’m ready to do all that it takes. And if I become president, I’ll make sure that I shall greatly reward you. You’ll have my protection and that of all the law enforcement agencies. Your organization will be able to operate with less fear or worry.”
“It’s difficult, I must admit.”
“I know it is, but you are the only one I trust. If you need to sleep on it, then have fun dreaming about the glory.”
“Promise me that you won’t utter a word of this to anyone else until I get back to you,” said Alonso.
“I give you my word as King,” the man replied.
Alonso felt the mission was a tough row to hoe. He tried to imagine the possibility as he found his way back to the great hall. In Italy, yes, it was pretty achievable, but in Russia, it was close to an impossible mission. He obviously could pull a few strings, but to get the king to become president was as hard as it gets. Nonetheless, Alonso smiled, knowing that there would be a great reward in making this come true.
Currently, Alonso’s Mafia organization was influential primarily in Italy. The fact that he would be able to thrive better on Russian soil was a tempting offer. However, there was one thing he was worried about, and that was the Makarov family. They would have someone that they were backing up in the elections. Like in Italy, how he aided the current president into his position.
If he decided to use Mariyanna’s influence, they would want their share, and he knew the King wouldn’t want that. And if the Makarov family weren’t in support of the King becoming president, he would be faced with a war. He didn’t want a war, especially now that he had formed a new alliance with the Makarov family through their new Don. On two occasions tonight, the king had put him in a tender spot. Rejecting the first offer was spot on easy, but unfortunately, the second one may not be easy to reject. He would incur the wrath of the Royal family.
Bianco had been waiting for Alonso to come out because he had a message for him from the security guard with Taleela back at the casino.
“Boss,” Bianco said, looking panicky.
“Why does it look like you have bad news for me?” Alonso asked, bracing himself.
“It’s Taleela; she abandoned the security men and fled the casino on her own!”
***
Taleela had gotten the urge to replace the man who had information about her past, and she had successfully fooled the guards into letting her go shopping because she was bored and needed air. She did a little to change her appearance in the store. She came out looking like an entirely different person, and she had passed them without suspicion. By the time they realized they had been fooled, she would have been long gone. She had no idea where she was going, but it felt as though she was being guided from the inside.
Mariyanna once again went over the text message that she had received from Agent Fox, and she again had to disagree with the last part. She couldn’t accept that he thought he had seen werewolves attack him. She wondered if his condition of schizophrenia had gotten worse. She knew he was alive because she had received more text messages from him. She had sent the agent to meet with Olga.
Nestor was back at the Makarov family house, thinking about returning to the Casino to storm there with some men. Still, he was uncertain about how Taleela ended up with his enemies. Also, he knew that if Alonso had kept her safe all this time, then it was probably best to let him continue to do so. He doubted that he knew that Alyona was Ivan’s daughter. Suddenly as he lifted his face towards the gate, he saw Alyona, but she was disguised, and she could have fooled him into believing she was someone else.
