“My grandfather never forsook you even after all he learned about what you had done,” Alonzo said.

“I’m so sorry, Alonzo,” Alyona said, rubbing his chest. They were lying in her bed together.

“Yeah, me too,” he replied. “Yeah, me too.”

“I’m glad you are alive, but how did you survive?” Alyona asked the one thing that had been pending in her mind.

“Draper died that day and not me; I had to fake my death to make sure you don’t suspect me coming after you.”

“Alright,” Alyona replied.

“Did you send thugs to burn down my company?” Alonzo said, and this made Alyona sit up.

She looked at him disbelievingly and said, “What, hell no! Your company got burned?”

“Yeah, about the same period you left for Russia.”

“I didn’t do it, I swear,” Alyona said, swallowing hard. “But I do have a confession to make.”

“Mhm, what’s that?” Alonzo eyed her.

“I didn’t burn down your company, Alonzo, but I poisoned your horse.”

“Oh, I knew that already but thanks for coming out clean with me. I believe you if you say you didn’t do it. La Corporations De Sina is under reconstruction, but I won’t forgive whoever committed such an atrocity.”

“What if it was Mariyanna who did it?”

“Why would you think so?”

“Didn’t you say you turned down one of her proposals she pitched to you?”

“Yeah, I did, but there was no big deal; it didn’t cost us anything. Mariyanna concluded that it was perfectly alright that I didn’t want to invest yet in Arilogistics airline carriers.”

“Okay, if you say so,” Alyona said, shrugging. “We will figure out who committed the arson on your company.”

“Yeah, I’m sure we will.”

“You know, I used to think this place was the safest place for me, but you proved that it is not true tonight,” Alyona said.

“If Alonzo means to replace a person, there’s no haven he can’t penetrate,” said Alonzo.

“Noted, same here.”

Alonzo arched a brow at her and laughed. “You don’t have what it takes, Alyona.”

“That’s a lie; I have you!”

“Oh, except that.” He chuckled.

“And what if Alonzo needs to hide from a person? Is there a sanctuary for him?”

“Only fools go into hiding; I would rather face what’s coming heads on.”

“I swear, me too; I wasn’t hiding. That’s why you found me here in my bedroom. I need to beef up my security team around here.”

“You can beef it up all you want, but I’m telling you, I am like a moving freight train if I mean to get to you. No guards, no matter the size of their unit and the amount of training they’ve undergone, would ever be enough to stop me.”

“I admire your confidence.” Alyona leaned and kissed him on the lips.

This moment felt good to be in each other’s arms again, to share bodily warmth on the same bed. They had just realized how much they loved and missed themselves.

Nonetheless, Alonzo wanted to spend a few minutes, not up to an hour, and then he would be gone. He didn’t desire for Mariyanna to replace him with Alyona and ruin the element of surprise for her. He was going to let Alyona handle her sister without interfering.

“I have to go now, okay,” Alonzo said when he reluctantly pulled himself away from her k**s.

“I’ll see you in the morning then,” she replied.

His stomach churned as he left Alyona on the bed and donned his face mask back on. He moved swiftly as if any uncertainty would make him do a u-turn and go back to finish what they had started.

There they were, Bianco and Vincenzo. They had been waiting for him outside the front porch. They, too, had their masks on. He knew they would have a lot of questions for him. Moments ago, he was on the verge of killing Alyona, but then they had seen him hugging her.

Also, it had been upon Alyona’s order that her guards stood down, and they didn’t encounter any challenge when leaving the Makarov mansion. None of the guards knew who they were. Alyona said she had a cover-up story, which would be that they were part of some new bodyguards she was trying out to recruit into the family.

“Care to offer any explanation of what just happened?” Bianco said when they had gotten into the car.

Alonzo sighed, “Mariyanna framed me for sleeping with her, and that had been what spiked up Alyona’s anger.”

“That’s it?” Bianco asked, shocked. That indeed wasn’t enough reason.

“Also…” Alonzo drew out the word, smiling.

“Also, what?” Vincenzo asked; he, too, was in suspense.

“Alyona’s pregnant,” Alonzo revealed. “Can you believe it? Because I can’t. It’s like a dream.”

Vincenzo reached for Alonzo’s face and shook it. “Well, did you feel that?”

“Uh-huh yeah,” Alonzo responded. “It’s as real as it gets. I can’t wait to break the news to Mazza.”

“Congratulations, man,” Bianco said, but his voice betrayed his genuine emotion.

Alonzo’s heart ached for his friend. Bianco had lost his mate and unborn child. She was a human much like Alyona. He had consoled him back then, but only now did he genuinely feel and understand Bianco’s pain.

“Hey man, I’m sorry about your mate, okay,” Alonzo said, repressing his joy.

“Come on, Don, you should be happy; I’m so glad for you and your mate.” Bianco turned to him with a smile that suggested otherwise. He was anything but glad.

Vincenzo felt the awkward moment growing between them, deciding to intervene; he said, “How about we call Piccolo to replace out what he has learned from meeting with Callisto.”

“That sounds like what we should do,” Alonzo agreed.

“Pico, what’s the word?” Alonzo said.

“Callisto wasn’t bluffing; I’m staring at the head of a dead man,” Piccolo answered and continued, “You don’t sound like a man who just killed the former love of his life. Unless you didn’t-“

“You are right, Pico; I didn’t kill her,” Alonzo explained everything again to Piccolo, and he was silent for a minute.

Piccolo exhaled noisily and said, “Alright, that’s good news. I’m happy you didn’t go through the horrors of killing your mate. Why can’t you tell me the other thing over the phone?”

“Piccolo, just come to the Casino, okay,” Alonzo said, eyeing Bianco.

“Alright, see you in a bit,” Piccolo said, ending the call. He turned his attention to Callisto. Unknown to Piccolo, the meeting occurred in one of the houses Callisto used as a Decoy

“I see you need to go now,” Callisto offered.

“Yes, I do,” Piccolo answered. Each time he looked at Callisto’s face, he suppressed the urge to charge at him and kill him.

“Alright, be careful,” Callisto warned, feigning his concern for Piccolo. “There is a dangerous pack out there. As I explained, I have been tracking the alpha for some weeks.”

“Oh, I can hold my own against an inexperienced pack! To clarify, I did not believe anything you said, in case you think I did. I’ll be seeing you at the coronation, yeah.”

When Piccolo had left, Callisto gritted his teeth. He hated Piccolo second after Alonzo. He called Mariyanna to tell her what he had learned.

“Where the hell are you?” Callisto said.

“In a hotel, why?” Mariyanna retorted. She was in the middle of having s*x with her girlfriend.

“I told you Alonzo couldn’t be dead,” Callisto said. “He is in Russia, and whatever you think you did to thwart that lovebird’s relationship, I’m telling you it didn’t work. They are back together, and you, my friend, should watch your back.”

The phone fell out of Mariyanna’s hand, and Natalie gave her a what the f**k happened to you look.

“Are you alright? You look like you’ve heard the most heart-wrenching news!”

“Yeah, I did, and I’m suddenly not in the mood to finish what we started. Get dressed; we are done here.”

“What the f**k? I thought we had a connection?”

“Be gone!” Mariyanna yelled, and Natalie hurried out of bed.

She dressed up in total confusion. She even wore her top inside out before realizing it, and then she wore it correctly.

“Take this for your time,” Mariyanna handed her a wad of cash.

“F**k you bitch! I don’t need it!” Natalie said to save face. She needed the money but was too embarrassed and proud to collect it because of how Mariyanna sent her away.

Mariyanna didn’t even care. She was wondering how her sister had managed to get Alonzo back.

“I’m starting to think it should have been better for you to have just died, Alonzo,” Mariyanna thought. “That way, everyone would lose. Damn it!”

She tried Agent Fox’s number, but he wasn’t picking up. She had no idea that Agent Fox had bitten the dust.

“Damn it, Fox,” she said. “You better have a good reason for not answering my calls.”

Rather than call Callisto back to replace out why her Agent wasn’t picking up, she decided she would meet him in his place. She threw on her clothes and fetched her car key.
