It was still dark although it was morning, and Alyona had awoken from a sound sleep with a start. She had the most disturbing feeling like somebody had been looming over her as she slept stroking her heel but that was impossible, right? She had locked her door before going to bed and they were three guards stationed just outside her room. She threw on her sleeping robe properly and wore her slippers, marching towards the door. She expected to replace it unlocked but it was still locked and when she opened the door she found the guards still at alert.

“Good morning Don,” greeted the first guard who saw her and the rest followed.

“Good morning,” Alyona mumbled, closing the door in surprise. She shook off the unwanted feeling of being watched and decided to get to the day’s activity.

She checked her phone first as was her usual routine but there were no new messages or calls which meant that there was still no word from Mariyanna.

Alyona then changed into her exercise clothes to take a jog inside the spacious compound. She told the guards there was no need for them to follow her since she felt safe inside the house.

After a while of intense running around, Alyona paused breathlessly at the poolside to catch her breath. She was sweating profusely and panting softly. A pedometer strapped to her left arm showed that she had taken a total of eight thousand, five hundred, and forty-two steps in six minutes. Alyona smiled because she had beaten her previous record.

Alyona decided to take a quick shower in the bathroom located in the swimming pool area. By the time she was done the time was barely five a.m.

To kill more time since she couldn’t exactly go back to sleep, Alyona decided to do some swimming exercises right after washing up her sweaty body. There was already a swimming trunk in the bathroom which she changed into before entering the pool.

Mariyanna evaded the guards as she maneuvered her way through the house like a viper. Her right foot hit a flowered vase and almost knocked it down but she instinctively steadied it, withdrawing into the shadow. She cussed silently when the guard she was trying to dodge glanced in her direction. The sound had alerted the guard and the guard was coming in her direction pretty fast.

She had accidentally dropped the gun she was carrying while trying to save the flowered vase from breaking. She had no time to retrieve the gun so she quickly slipped into one of the rooms on the passageway gently closing the door.

From the peephole, she watched the guard crouch down, and pick up the gun. He looked confused as he studied the gun and tucked it into his trouser. He grabbed the door’s handle but Mariyanna had already locked herself inside so when he tried to open it he found out it was locked. The guard turned to leave after a while and Mariyanna exhaled with relief. Mariyanna listened to his receding footsteps and she opened the door, continuing her journey.

Mariyanna ran into another guard right before she could make it to the poolside where Costello said Alyona was. Without many options as to where to hide since she was outside, she quickly unlocked the door and retreated into a wine cellar that was close to her. It was a magnificent wine cellar, with over three thousand bottles. The space was dimly lit with golden light. She peered through the door which was slightly ajar and the unsuspecting guard walked right past her, continuing his patrol duties. Mariyanna then used the cover of night to get to the poolside unannounced.

Alyona was swimming, body deep inside the water and she wasn’t alert to the other presence with her in the water. Suddenly, almost like in a nightmare, she felt somebody forcing her to go deeper inside the pool. She tried to struggle to raise her head above the water but she felt a determined force pushing her back inside. Her legs flayed helplessly and she couldn’t shout for help. All she heard was the sound of her struggles and the sound of water splashing like a great many fishes fighting. She was used to holding her breath underwater for two minutes at most and she didn’t know how long it had been since she was under the water but she felt the need to breathe— a terrible idea.

Mariyanna felt Alyona stop struggling but she kept holding her down waiting for her to drown and she knew it wouldn’t take long for the bubble to show indicating that Alyona had finally taken a breather. Just as she had predicted the water bubbled and she smiled evilly.

Alonzo leaped into the pool and yanked Mariyanna away from Alyona. Mariyanna landed in the middle of the pool surprised and confused by the sudden movement. Did someone just grab and fling her like she was nothing but a doll inside the water or did Alyona possess some kind of magical power? She gasped when she saw Alonzo glaring back at how.

“What? How is he here?” Mariyanna questioned silently.

She had no time to wonder. She was just going to run away but as soon as she swam to the pool’s edge she saw a pair of big feet and as she raised her head she saw a man folding his arm across his chest.

“Do you need help getting out of the pool?” Piccolo asked her, smiling. Mariyanna looked around feeling trapped. “It is over, there is nowhere else to run to,” Piccolo added.

Alyona was laid on the floor as Alonzo performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her. Water sprouted from her mouth as she jerked back to life.

“Thank God!” Alonzo said.

“Alonzo, what are you doing here?” Alyona asked, looking in the direction of his eyes. Piccolo was restraining Mariyanna and he waved at her.

“Saving you,” Alonzo said. “Your sister just tried to drown you.”

Alyona pressed her forehead with her thumb and index finger as she squinted in discomfort. A memory had just resurfaced and she knew why. She remembered everything now. Mariyanna’s failed attempt to drown her made her remember her pre-amnesia moment.

Alyona got up angrily and was matching toward her sister when she heard a gunshot, causing her to halt against her wish.

Piccolo let go of Mariyanna and turned slowly towards his shooter. Costello looked at Piccolo in wonder. How was he not dead? He asked himself. He shot repeatedly at Piccolo until Piccolo got to where he was and knocked him down with a punch.

“How?” Costello said. “How are you not dead?”

“It is an early morning full of surprises,” Piccolo answered, taking the gun away from him. The series of gunshots had alerted the guards who were running skittishly to the scene.

“How could you?” Alyona said, giving Mariyanna a resounding slap. “How could you try to kill me twice?”

“Wait what?” Alonzo asked, taken aback.

“F**k you Alyona,” Mariyanna spat in her face. “I curse the day you were born. You stole everything from me. Father loved you more even though I did everything to please him. I am supposed to be the Don of this family, not you!”

“Give me your f*****g gun,” Alyona said to one of the guards.

“What?” The guard replied, hesitant but Alyona yanked the gun from the holster strapped to his waist.

Alonzo watched Alyona spring into action and he immediately tried to reason with her. “Alyona I know you are angry but please put the gun down.”

“That is right, Alyona, you will forever regret it if you spill family b***d,” Piccolo said gently, even trying to use himself as a shield to block Mariyanna.

“Go ahead, kill me, what are you waiting for you coward,” Mariyanna said and Alyona pointed the gun determinedly.

“Pico, move aside,” Alyona said.

“Listen to me Alyona, don’t listen to her,” Alonzo said. “It’s over for her now, let’s just call the cops and charge her with attempted murder twice.”

Alonzo’s hand closed in on hers and he lowered her hand gently until she handed him the gun and broke into a sob. He hugged her.

From the corner of his eyes, he could see the guards apprehend Costello and Mariyanna, marching them away.

“Piccolo, make sure those two don’t get out of your sight, and please call the cops,” Alonzo instructed, still cradling Alyona in his arms.

Alyona sniffed and pursed her lips. She said, “Thanks for saving me.”

“I told you I’ll arrive early,” he said.

“Yeah, but I wasn’t expecting you so early in the morning,” Alyona replied. “How did you get past my security?”

“I told you before that there’s no security tight enough to stop me from getting to you if I mean to,” Alonzo said. “I arrived too early and rather than check into a hotel I was too eager to see you after all this time. I’m glad I showed up when I did.”

“How did you know where I was exactly?”

Alonzo touched his nose. “Your scent, plus I sensed the danger you were in.”

“Wow, awesome!” Alyona said. “I can’t believe my sister tried to kill me twice.”

“It might have been more than that,” Alonzo said, smiling. “Think about the times you almost got killed. Poison at my casino, getting shot at in the house here.”

“God,” Alyona whispered. “I feel so broken.”

“Yeah, it’s life, anyone is capable of harm,” Alonzo said.

A few minutes later, Alyona went outside to meet with the police and she gave her report. They said she’d have to come to the station to write it down and Alonzo said he’d take her down himself.

Mariyanna was forced into the vehicle with the red and blue lights. She was cuffed behind her back. Likewise, Costello followed next, and the officer shut the door.

“Are you okay, babe?” Alonzo asked, squeezing Alyona’s knee gently. They were sitting in the back seat of his car.

“Hmm, yeah sure, she should rot in hell for all I care,” Alyona said.

Alonzo looked at Piccolo who threw him a salute and whispered, “See you later.”

Alonzo gave him a thumbs up and the car followed behind the cop’s own. Alyona rested her head on his chest and he stroked her hair gently. Yeah, their enemies had been vanquished, and now he could see a future for them. A future which at the start of his story with Alyona he had never imagined would come to be.
