The Alpha's Unwanted Mate
The Alpha’s Unwanted Mate Chapter 23

Celeste’s eyes fluttered open, only to be greeted by the bright, unsolicited sun. The curtains were already drawn, the windows tilted open and Zillon was nowhere to be seen.

His scent still lingered in the room, but it wasn’t strong which meant he probably left more than a hour ago. Perhaps he was with Celia now and even if he wasn’t, his whereabouts wasn’t any of her business.

Sitting up on the bed, Celeste looked down at her bandaged arm. What had willed her to put pressure on the razor that day?

Which demon from hell had persuaded her that dying would be better than living?

Why did she not think about the fact that it’d be painful?

Why did she just think about what Zillon did, where he was going and what he’d do in the future?

Why didn’t she think about herself?

She was a fool, but she wouldn’t be a fool anymore. Her feelings now came first, not Zillon’s, not anybody’s. Since nobody else would, she’d cater for herself physically and mentally, for the very first time in her life, she’d try to love herself even if nobody else did.

She might not be as pretty as Celia, she might not know how to apply makeup, how to dress, but she had a heart of gold and she’d use it wisely.

Taking a deep breath, she looked towards the door when she heard approaching footsteps. It wasn’t Zillon, she knew because this scent was unfamiliar to her nostrils, fresh to her memory.

The door in front of her slid open and she relaxed when she realized that it was a doctor.

“Your mate told me that you’ve been awake since last night. That’s surprising despite how weak you were. You lost a lot of b***d, although you’re awake now, I still need to watch how fast your body will heal.”

“Then how long will I be kept here?”

“Not long, if you’re healing fine then you can leave tomorrow.”

“And can I not eat?”

“Oh yes…” The doctor lightly chuckled. “Your mate has gone out t—”

“I’m here.” Zillon stepped into the room after shouldering the doctor out of the doorway. “She can eat anything, right?”

“I suppose so.”

“Then I brought you c—”

“I don’t want it.”

Both the doctor and Zillon looked at Celeste, but Zillon was the first to speak. “And why not?”

“Because I can get myself food.”

“Right, you can’t leave the hospital Celeste.”

“Then I’ll starve.”

Zillon sighed, walking over to place the two foods he brought on the bedside table. “You’re not going to starve because I’m not going to watch you starve, Celeste. I told you that I owed you last night, please accept the fact that I’m paying off my debts.”

“You don’t owe me any—”

“I-uh…I have another patient next door, I’ll just go do their check up now.”

Neither Celeste or Zillon looked over at the doctor who carefully wobbled outside and closed the door behind him…Both were too busy glaring at each other. “Just eat, Celeste. We both know that you’re hungry.”

Celeste turned away from him and from the tempting smell of the food and instead stared at the wall. “No.”

“Alright, I won’t force you, it’s actually your business if you want to starve.”

With that, Zillon opened up one of the plates, picked up a slice of bread and began eating. He knew sick people were always given porridge and soup, but since he didn’t know if she liked any of those, he brought what he knew she’d eat…

A chicken sandwich.

It might just be a chicken sandwich, but he had to go through extreme measures to get it. First he had to go to his parents house and second he had to beg his mother to make it. She didn’t want to since she was currently not talking to him, but after coming up with the condition that after leaving the hospital Celeste would stay with her, she happily made them for him.

That witch! She accused him of not being a good mate and even though it was true, she shouldn’t have said it, she was his mother for Christ’s sake.

Sighing, he bit into the bread again, eyes fixated on Celeste who refused to stare anywhere near his direction. She probably hated him.

He could sense it in the way she looked at him, the way she spoke, but hating him has absolutely nothing to do with starving herself. She could starve him, he wouldn’t mind, but as for herself, he minded greatly

In order to recover smoothly, she needed to eat and if she refuses to do so, when will she finally be okay?

Sighing again, Zillon dropped the food back into his plate and swallowed what of it was in his mouth. “Celeste…?”

“What?”

“I know you’re hungry, eat.”

“No.”

“You can hate me, but at least take care of yourself. Don’t you want to leave this hospital, don’t you want a speedy recovery?”

“No…I-I mean yes.”

“Then at least eat one bite. I’m not the person who made it, my mom did and she even sent a get well card.”

“Liar, nobody would send me a card, not even my mom.”

“Look…” Zillon pulled the card from under his plate and laid it on top of hers. “If you’re taking the card, you’ve got to take the food too.”

Celeste reluctantly turned to look at him, no doubt spotting the card. She’d never get one before, not even on her birthday. Without even realising it, she reached for the plate and as soon as it reside in her lap, she took up the card and opened it.

‘Get well soon, my daughter-in-law. We’ll have so much fun when you get discharged.

See you soon, love…

From: Your mom/Beth’

Celeste’s heart almost moved in her chest as she closed it. “What does she mean by—”

“She means you and not only you, but you and I will be going over to their house as soon as you’re discharged.”
