The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 125 Not Divorcing for Now
"What did you say?" Michael asked.
Emily replied, "I said we can hold off on the divorce for now. The Smith family has helped me a lot, and so has Grandpa. I want to help the Smith family through this crisis. I can help you clear things up."
"After this is over, we can talk about the divorce again. But once I step in to clarify, if you still want to make your affair with Sophia public, it will be tough. By then, you'll have to face not just the shareholders and Grandpa." Emily wanted to make her good intentions clear to Michael. She didn't want Michael to think she was being selfish and deliberately trying to prevent him from marrying Sophia.
But what Emily didn't expect was that Michael agreed without hesitation, without even a moment's doubt. "You agreed just like that?"
"What else?" Michael asked.
"Don't you need to think it over, or discuss it with Sophia?" Emily said.
Hearing Emily's sarcastic probing, Michael laughed in exasperation. "Whether I need to discuss it with Sophia is our business. But I don't think she would say anything over such a small matter. You and I won't divorce, for now; we'll get through this. Once I replace out who's behind this, I'll definitely thank you."
Hearing Michael's response, Emily was completely disheartened. Emily cared deeply for Michael, so how could she not have some personal motives for helping?
But seeing how confident Michael was in his relationship with Sophia, she had no more illusions. She decided to help this time just to repay Mason and the Smith family.
Meanwhile, Michael was feeling quite uneasy. What did Emily mean? She was the rightful lady of the Smith family, his legally wedded wife, yet she always pushed him towards Sophia.
Yes, he did have feelings for Sophia. But shouldn't Emily be the one opposing this? After all, he wanted a divorce because of Sophia! What was Emily thinking? Was she really that stupid, or did she never care about him?
Then why did she marry him in the first place, wasting his time and emotions? She didn't care about money or feelings. Was she here just to contribute to the Smith family?
"Alright, I'm leaving," Emily said.
Just as Michael was thinking, Emily was ready to leave with her bag. But Michael wouldn't let her go easily. He raised his arm to block her way.
Emily felt like she had fallen into a trap, frowning defensively at Michael. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing, it's late. Let's have dinner together," Michael replied.
"I'm not hungry," Emily said.
"But I am," Michael said.
Hearing this, Emily found it absurd. "The internet is full of people cursing you, and Veda hasn't come home yet. How can you still eat? Even if you can eat, I'm not hungry. Why are you stopping me?"
'If the sky falls, just use it as a blanket. Besides, the sky won't fall, and I sure as hell won't be ruined.'
That was Michael's life motto.
Michael said, "You said we wouldn't mention divorce for now, and you need to clarify things publicly. You need to be consistent in your actions. Do you think those reporters are useless? If they see us having dinner, won't the rumors be dispelled?"
Though Michael made sense, Emily couldn't help but retort. "Whether the rumors will be dispelled is uncertain. But I know out of ten comments, one will definitely call me an idiot."
Michael was speechless. How had he never noticed how stubborn Emily could be?
Despite this, Emily still accompanied Michael. The driver had already left, and Andrew volunteered to drive. But Michael didn't give him a chance, taking the driver's seat himself and insisting Emily sit in the front passenger seat. He said, "What couple sits one in front and one in back? The reporters will have a field day with that."
Emily endured it for Mason's sake. She sat in the front passenger seat and suddenly smelled a pleasant hawthorn scent in Michael's car. A pregnant woman experiencing morning sickness would love this smell. Emily took a deep breath, feeling much better.
Since their marriage, she usually rode in Andrew's old car or the company car. Because Emily always felt Michael's car was dirty. Not literally dirty, but she felt it was tainted by Sophia.
So even if she had to ride in it, she would sit in the back. She never wanted to sit in the front passenger seat. Emily had assumed the front seat would smell like a woman's strong perfume. But today she realized she was wrong. "You like hawthorn?" Emily rarely chatted with Michael.
"It's alright. I have some hawthorn in the car. Do you want some?" Michael also rarely responded.
Their conversation hadn't been this peaceful in a long time. Seeing Emily nod shyly, Michael took the half-eaten box of hawthorn from the console, opened it during a red light, and handed it to her.
This small gesture meant a lot to Emily. No wonder Sophia was so infatuated with Michael, no wonder she always wanted to be with him. Michael could be irresistible when he was gentle. Unfortunately, this gentleness was never directed at her.
Biting into the hawthorn, Emily felt extremely content. She quickly forgot her worries and continued eating.
This made Michael crave it too. Though they were about to eat, he wasn't very hungry, the hawthorn was a rare treat for him now.
The hawthorn was imported, known for its sourness, and Michael had someone buy it for him.
Because of his recent contact with Emily and her constant nausea, Michael had lost his appetite and craved sour foods. So he kept some hawthorn in his office and car.
Michael had thought of bringing some for Emily, but he had been too busy and forgot. Now that Emily was eating it, it was a happy accident. But her constant eating made Michael crave it more. He couldn't stop swallowing and even his stomach growled.
Emily heard this and paused, looking at Michael. "Are you hungry?"
"Not really," Michael replied.
His stomach growled again. The situation was quite awkward.
Emily, feeling embarrassed to eat hawthorn alone, turned to Michael and asked, "Are you really hungry? Do you want some hawthorn to tide you over?"
