The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 180 Michael's Suspicion
"Yeah, we loved once, and love always comes with its share of pain and heartache. It's totally normal," Penelope said, her eyes shimmering with tears. "But I don't regret it. I believe there's more to life than just love. It's not about men; I can live a better life. Sure, thinking about Bryan is fine, but thinking about myself is a must."
Penelope wiped her tears and turned to Emily. "Emily, you should think this way too. All women should. But hey, I still wish you and Michael all the happiness in the world."
Emily smiled. Seeing how Penelope could be so open-minded, she realized there was no need to console her.
But the blessing Penelope mentioned... Could she and Michael really be happy forever?
Later, Emily and Michael finally said goodbye to the Watson Mansion and headed back to Emerald Lake Manor.
Emily asked, "What did you talk about with Bryan?"
She could tell from Michael's expression that he and Bryan must have had a good conversation; otherwise, Michael would be fuming right now.
Michael replied, "I just told him to take good care of the Watson family business. He's not in a great state right now, but it's understandable. Anyone would be after going through something like this."
After saying that, Michael seemed to remember something and said to Emily, "You've had a rough couple of days. There's another banquet tomorrow. After that, you can rest at home for a few days."
Michael originally planned to start investigating Veda's kidnapping. If this matter was really related to Emily, and she worked at Smith Corporation, wouldn't that alert her?
But from Emily's perspective, she rarely saw Michael being so considerate. She couldn't help but wonder if Richard and Penelope's situation had given him some insight.
Or maybe seeing Bryan's sadness made Michael realize the impact of divorce? But their baby was still in her belly, and Michael didn't know. What was there to be afraid of? Emily couldn't figure it out, nor could she understand Michael.
She just nodded and leaned back in the passenger seat, falling into a deep sleep.
Fortunately, the baby had been calm these past two days and didn't disturb her rest.
But in the middle of the night, Emily suddenly felt her stomach churning, so she got up and vomited a few times.
She intended to go downstairs to get a glass of water but coincidentally ran into Michael.
"Are you here to get water too?" Emily asked, and Michael nodded.
He suddenly became very cold again, and after getting the water, he went straight upstairs.
He didn't say a word, not even a word of concern.
Just a couple of days ago, he insisted on sleeping in the same bed with her.
But now, without asking, he had moved to a guest room far away.
Sometimes Emily really wondered, could there be two Michaels in this world? One was cold and ruthless, the other was shameless and rogue. Forget it, taking care of herself and protecting the baby was the right path.
Thinking of this, Emily got her water and went upstairs by herself.
The next morning, Emily followed Michael's instructions and skipped work.
Michael left early, and it wasn't until the banquet was about to start that he returned to Emerald Lake Manor to pick her up.
Today, Emily wore a simple white dress. Her hair was loosely tied up, and she only applied a bit of blush, making her look vibrant from the inside out. Even with such a simple look, she still stood out in the crowd.
Michael, as usual, was stunned at first sight but was too embarrassed to show it, so he continued to act coldly and opened the car door for Emily.
"Today, we just need to make an appearance," Michael said. "But we might run into Bryan, which wouldn't be surprising. The Watson family has had a bad reputation lately, and since he's taking over the family business, Mr. Richard Watson might bring him to get acquainted. We just need to say hello. No need to offer extra help, or it might seem like a thankless effort to Bryan."
With that, Michael stepped on the gas and sped off.
Emily didn't argue, as Michael made some sense. She just nodded throughout, completely following his arrangements.
"By the way," Michael spoke again after a while, breaking the awkward silence. "There will be a lot of media today. We should act more affectionate. Tomorrow, there might be reports, and the public opinion will be dispelled." Hearing this, Emily felt a mix of emotions. Act more affectionate? It was laughable. They were a married couple, yet they had to pretend to be affectionate.
If she had known it would be like this, she might as well have divorced like Penelope and Richard.
Seeing Emily not responding for a long time, Michael felt strange, and his suspicions grew. Did Emily not want to show affection in front of the media? Or did she want the rumors to spread even more? Could the IP address Andrew found near the Brown family really be Emily's doing?
Michael didn't want to doubt Emily, but her hesitant behavior made him unable to understand.
"Did you hear me?" Michael asked again suddenly.
Emily's thoughts were interrupted, and she nodded dejectedly. "Got it."
At the banquet, businessmen mingled, greeting each other with their interests in mind.
Bryan had always hated such occasions. But he couldn't fight the changes in the world, nor his father's orders, so he had to attend, pretending to toast with those businessmen.
"Isn't this Mr. Bryan Watson? Haven't seen you in Emerald City for a while. Just got back?"
"I remember you didn't like drinking with us. What's changed today? Is Mr. Richard Watson back? No son can defy his father!"
"Exactly, Mr. Bryan Watson, you should take over the family business now, stop running around. Learn from Michael, look how well he runs Smith Corporation!"
"Michael? Don't joke, he's struggling with personal issues. Look, isn't that Sophia!"
The people around Bryan couldn't stop gossiping.
As Bryan was about to ignore them, he heard them turn to discuss Sophia. Bryan looked over and saw Sophia looking at him.
The woman, in a black dress with red lips, smiled seductively and waved at him.
