Chapter 39 Bringing Up Divorce Again
"Did Michael tell you?" Emily asked.
Mason snorted on the other end of the line. "Don't even bring up that jerk. Anyway, how are you holding up? I heard you went back home. It's all Michael's fault, and I've already given him an earful. Why don't you and Michael come stay at the old house for a few days? You need to take care of yourself. I'll make sure Michael stays with you. Sound good?"
Emily wanted to stay at the old house, but that was out of the question now. The divorce with Michael was already in motion. If Mason found out she was pregnant, he probably wouldn't agree to the split.
So she said, "Grandpa, I'm fine. Michael didn't push me on purpose. He's already apologized. Plus, my mom's health has been getting better lately, and I want to spend more time with her at the hospital."
This wasn't a lie to Mason. Isabella's health had indeed improved a lot. Her body was slowly recovering, so Emily still wanted to spend more time with her at the hospital.
Mason originally wanted them to stay at the old house, thinking their relationship might improve if they spent time together. But hearing Emily say this, he could only regretfully say, "Alright then, take good care of yourself." He added, "I'll have Stella Hall bring you some food. You always loved her cooking, right?"
Emily agreed and quickly hung up, feeling a bit guilty. Mason was so good to her, and she was really afraid he would hate her if he found out the truth later. Her guilt towards Mason was growing.
Meanwhile, Michael quickly got the hospital records Andrew had sent. He saw it was just a bruise on the lower back, and the recommendation was to stay in the hospital for observation, but Emily had chosen to go home.
Michael remembered the nauseous feeling from yesterday and felt a bit guilty and frustrated. His body felt fine now, but he was sure Emily's influence on him hadn't disappeared.
He thought, 'Yesterday, her back injury didn't affect my back, so Emily's physical pain doesn't affect me? Then what was affecting me? Was it only the nausea that affected me?'
For the first time, Michael felt a bit confused, like things were slipping out of his control.
Emily rested at home for a few days, tormented by severe morning sickness. Michael was also in a low mood, and neither of them had the energy to argue.
Emily decided that once she felt a bit better, she would proceed with the divorce. She didn't want to delay any longer.
One morning, Emily was about to bring up the divorce with Michael. They had been dealing with a lot recently and hadn't mentioned it again, but that didn't mean she had forgotten.
As soon as Emily went downstairs, she smelled the aroma of food. She thought it must be the food Mason had Stella bring. She had always loved Stella's cooking. She saw Michael sitting at the dining table.
He said, "Come and eat." Emily noticed that his tone and expression were better than she had expected.
Emily thought it was a good time to bring up the divorce while he was in a good mood. Just as she was about to speak, a wave of nausea hit her, and she rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
Michael's face suddenly darkened, and he gripped his knife and fork tightly. He followed Emily to the bathroom. Fortunately, it was spacious enough for both of them to lean over the sink and vomit in unison. After vomiting, Emily looked up at Michael, who was also looking at her.
"Are you okay?" Emily rinsed her mouth and then asked him. She noticed that every time she vomited, Michael did too. 'Is it a coincidence, or is he just sick?' Emily was puzzled.
Michael, having been tormented repeatedly over the past few days, was somewhat used to it. He said dejectedly, "Just keep torturing me."
Emily felt inexplicably angry and said, "What do you mean? Do you think I want to vomit?" Emily thought, 'If it weren't for your actions, would I be suffering like this?' She didn't dare to say this out loud but felt very wronged. 'What have I done wrong? I am already feeling terrible and still have to endure his cold treatment.'
Emily's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at Michael.
Michael saw the tears in Emily's eyes and panicked a bit but still said coldly, "So delicate. Does taking medicine make you this uncomfortable?"
Michael pulled out a tissue and handed it to her helplessly. At the sight of Emily's aggrieved look, his heart softened a bit. He clumsily wiped her face with the tissue.
"What are you doing? It hurts." Emily pushed him away as he rubbed her face roughly with the tissue.
"You are so delicate." Michael threw the tissue away and walked out.
Emily was confused by Michael's actions, but she wouldn't forget the pain from yesterday. She never wanted to experience that again.
Emily returned to the dining table and calmly said to him, "We should get divorced as soon as we have time. It's been delayed long enough. You must be eager too, right?"
Emily's words shattered the little bit of guilt Michael had. He glared at her and said crossly, "Emily, Daniel just brought you back a few days ago, and you're already so eager to get divorced?"
Michael's words made Emily feel nauseous again.
Michael remembered that when Stella brought the food this morning, she had told him that Mason wanted him to take good care of Emily. Mason was very worried and hoped they wouldn't mention divorce again.
But Emily knew Mason didn't want them to divorce, and he hadn't mentioned it to Mason either. Now she was bringing it up again.
Michael felt a mix of anger, panic, and unwillingness.
Emily was silent for a moment and then said in a low and calm voice, "Isn't divorce what you wanted?"
Michael let out a cold laugh. "I think it's what you want. What's so great about Daniel? Yes, he's a good guy. He's a doctor with a stable job and a gentle personality, right?"
Emily didn't want to respond to his nonsense and didn't know what he was talking about. Michael thought she tacitly approved it, which made him even angrier.
He continued, "Don't think I don't know about your agreement with your dad. As long as you divorce me, he'll give you the Brown Corporation, right? You even forced him to sign a letter of intent with a lawyer. I didn't expect you to be so
ambitious. You pretended to say you'd leave with nothing, but then you used the divorce to threaten your dad. I realize now that your cautious behavior was all an act. Your true self is just as hypocritical and selfish as you are now." Michael felt he had gone too far but couldn't take back his words.
Emily didn't know where Michael had heard this, but she guessed it was from Sophia.
Emily's face stiffened. Her agreement with Hayden was true, and using Michael as an excuse was also true.
Emily's face turned red as she lashed out, "Yes, I did make an agreement with Hayden, but the Brown Family belongs to my mom. Why shouldn't I take it back?"
Michael glanced at her. "Your mom has been in the hospital for so many years. What does the Brown Family have to do with her?"
Emily stared at him, realizing that Michael never cared about her and didn't know about her grievances against the Brown Family. He also didn't know that her mom had once been the daughter of the Taylor Family in Silverlight City.
