The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 58 Harboring and Shielding
Mason wanted Michael to stick around the hospital to look after Emily. Daniel was a bit on edge, worried Michael might replace out about Emily's pregnancy. He said, "Mason, Emily needs some peace and quiet. Too many people around won't help. At night, let's just get a caregiver for her. During the day, there are nurses and caregivers here, so Mr. Smith doesn't need to be here all the time. He's got a lot on his plate, so let's not bother him."
Mason shot Michael a glare. "What's he so busy with? Is the company gonna fall apart without him?"
Mason gave Michael a disapproving look, then turned to Daniel. "Daniel, thanks for all your hard work."
Daniel had to think fast and said, "Mason, let me walk you out."
Mason reminded Michael again to take care of Emily.
Honestly, Michael was already planning to stay with her. He felt responsible. Thinking about it, he remembered something important and said, "Sophia, you head back first. I have something to do." Without waiting for her reaction, he turned and left.
Emily had been moved to a ward. She was still out cold, lying there pale as a ghost, like a broken doll.
Michael looked at her. She was so thin and fragile, it made his heart ache. But why was she so stubborn, like a little hedgehog that wouldn't back down, or a rabbit that could bite?
Sophia watched Michael walk determinedly towards Emily. She was so angry her nails dug into her palms, but she didn't feel the pain.
She cursed under her breath, 'Emily, you're just a ghost haunting around Micheal. Don't blame me for being ruthless. This was just a warning; next time, you won't be so lucky.'
Sophia stomped her foot and stormed out of the hospital. Besides wanting Emily gone, she also wanted Michael back.
Noticing Michael's heart was drifting away from her, she felt an implacable urge to do something to stop it.
Sophia suddenly remembered there would be a charity auction at Silver Creek Manor in a week. Maybe that would be her chance.
She wanted Michael all to herself. Emily would never have a good time.
When Emily woke up, it was already the next morning. She smelled the disinfectant and realized she wasn't dead.
"Emily, you're awake," Daniel said, surprised.
Emily's throat was dry. "The baby, my baby?"
Daniel reassured her, "Don't worry, Emily. The baby is fine. Everything's okay."
Emily finally relaxed. She had thought she and the baby wouldn't make it, but it seemed they were still lucky.
Emily sat up, still pale, and said, "Daniel, someone knocked me out and threw me into the freezer on purpose."
Daniel nodded. "I know."
Emily's voice turned cold. "It was Sophia. It had to be her."
Daniel knew it wasn't that simple but said, "Michael is already looking into it. They've caught the guys who did it, just a couple of thugs."
Emily's eyes widened. "No way, it had to be Sophia behind it."
The door to the ward suddenly swung open. "Got any proof it was Sophia?" Michael's voice was icy and calm.
Emily shot him a cold look. "Michael, you didn't even investigate properly and just told me it was some random thugs. Don't you think that's a bit irresponsible?"
Michael saw her pale face and didn't want to argue. He walked in, keeping his voice steady. "You shouldn't stress about this right now. Just rest. I'll handle the culprits; they've already confessed."
Emily, remembering the terror of the freezer, suddenly screamed, "Michael, it was Sophia! She was behind it. Are you trying to cover for her?"
She was clearly shaken, and Michael's indifferent gaze only made it worse. He knew everything but didn't want to admit it. His face turned cold. "Emily, stop causing trouble. When you had the accident, she was with me the whole time. Why would she do that?"
Emily sneered. "Why? Ask her yourself. She has plenty of reasons, and you're one of them."
Michael thought Emily was being unreasonable, maybe because she was scared. He tried to calm her down. "You need to rest. The police caught those two thugs, and they've confessed. They thought they were kidnapping Veda to extort her but got the wrong person."
Emily found this laughable. "Michael, do you believe that ridiculous excuse? Wrong person? Extort Veda? Do you hear yourself? Can't you even lie properly? Who is Veda? She's the daughter of the Smith Family. Everyone in Emerald City knows her. Even if they got the wrong person, did they ask you for ransom? Did they demand money? Why did they just throw me in cold storage? Tell me, why?"
Emily was disgusted by Michael's behavior. Tears streamed down her face, her heart aching. 'Why has Michael become like this? No, maybe he has always been like this, and I just didn't see it.'
She wouldn't let Sophia get away with this.
Michael listened to Emily's questions, his face paling. He knew the thugs' excuse was full of holes, completely unbelievable.
But for now, he could only give Emily this answer because he was scared. He shuddered to think deeply, didn't dare to investigate further. He was afraid to face his own feelings. He admitted he was too cowardly. He said, "Emily, you should rest. I'll come back to see you later."
Emily didn't look at him and snarled, "Get out. I don't want to see you."
Michael scuttled out of the ward as if he was fleeing. As he closed the door, he heard Emily say, "Daniel, thank you for saving me."
Daniel didn't say anything. Michael, however, sneered at the door. 'Emily, you really are infuriating.'
Emily looked at Daniel, her voice lonely and empty. "Daniel, I'm sorry. I embarrassed myself. It was my fault. I shouldn't have looked for him in the first place."
