The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 128
Madison POV
‘What do you mean you haven’t found Zane yet? He is still lying in the hospital, unconscious.’ Ezekiel answered my question with bafflement.
‘In hospital?’ I whispered back in shock. I know dad said he went to hospital but did not make it sound serious.
‘Yes. Did you not know? I thought Jonathon had told you that he was in there.’ Ezekiel’s voice softened as he studied my face.
‘Dad said he was in hospital after a training issue and not to worry, I didn’t realise it was that bad, Dad never said it was bad.’ I fought not to cry as I thought about what my mate was going through. I never gave him another thought after being told it was a training exercise. We can all get injuries during training, and it is not usually life-threatening.
‘He was training. Jonathon had Zane in the library. They were doing wolf control training. Blaze is not coping with you, being a warrior and not with a pup yet, and Blaze attacked Zane. He has been unconscious since, I really thought you knew.’ Ezekiel looked full of mixed emotions, when he realised, I did not know.
‘I better get to the hospital and see if I can help him in any way.’ I said as I fought back a sob.
‘I will come with you. I need to see how he is doing now. I have not been to see him since we got back.’ Ezekiel put his arm around my shoulders and walked with me to the hospital. Trepidation filled my heart as we got closer to the hospital.
‘Good morning, Alpha.’ A nurse greeted Ezekiel and looked at me, not saying anything to me. Her face looked like she was filled with hatred, but I did not know why.
Ezekiel nodded and continued down the hallway, his arm still over my shoulder. As we reached his door, the doctor opened it and stopped, surprised to see us there.
‘Morning Doc, any change?’ Ezekiel asked as he steered me inside the room.
‘None, he has been the same since yesterday.’ Doc answered in the usual way, when talking about a patient.
‘What happened Doc?’ I asked as the doc led the way back to where they had Zane.
‘He is having an internal struggle with his wolf. It is rare but it can happen. Now you are here, maybe you can reach his wolf and him.’ he urged me towards Zane lying pale on the bed.
‘Sorry I was not here earlier, doctor. I did not know he was still there; I was told he had a training accident and all was well.’ I pushed passed the Doc and Ezekiel and almost ran to Zane’s bed.
I could hear Ezekiel and the Doctor chatting in the background, but my mind was so full of guilt for not coming back last night and while I was out having fun, my mate was there fighting for his life.
He looked pale in the bed, though he showed no signs of stress or pain, his heart monitor made a steady beeping sound and he had a drip line into his arm, which I had no idea what that was for.
As I got closer, I could see he was in restraint, so he must have been fighting for some time. At present there was not even a twitch in his hands or eyes. He was perfectly still, and the tears I had been holding back now fell, like rain from the sky.
Ezekiel pulled me to his chest and made soothing sounds as I hiccupped through my tears.
The nurse who we saw outside had come in and made a vicious comment.
‘So now you cry, where were you yesterday when he needed you, huh? You should never have been his mate.’ She growled at me.
Before Ezekiel or the Doctor could react, I did.
I spun so fast I almost sent Ezekiel flying.
I punched the nurse across the face, her head snapped back as her nose broke with a satisfying c***k, two teeth flew out of her mouth and she was sent flying across the room, and the back of her head hit the wall as it stopped her momentum.
‘Sorry, doctor, I think I broke your nurse. I request she never steps into this room again or I will kill her.’ I said more calmly than I felt, the rage of her comment and how deeply it affected me surprised even me.
The nurse was crying on the floor, her head covered in b***d.
The doctor rushed over to her and examined her face, before standing up and ordering the nurse out of the room and to never come near Zane’s room again. The nurse staggered up off the floor and left the room, b***d trailing on the floor from her bleeding nose and mouth.
I reached out and touched Zane’s cheek, and sobbed again. I stroked his face and leaned down and gave him a soft k**s on his cold lips.
‘Doctor, is it okay if I lie with him for a while?’ I asked huskily.
‘Sure, you can’t hurt him, he has no physical injuries, he is fighting an internal one.’ The doctor says with sympathy.
‘Can you explain that?’ I asked, a little confused by this whole situation, and my rage after the nurse had left the room had gone and my guilt had come back into force.
‘Not really. I have never come across a case like this in all my years as a doctor. I understand this is confusing, there is little we can do, but wait to see who wins.’ he looked as lost as I was feeling at that moment. I always preferred to have some sort of plan, and waiting was not one of my strong points.
‘If he loses, to his wolf?’
‘Then he will return without a wolf, but he will return.’ Ezekiel answered softly. He is also in pain from this.
‘Dad.’ I called Ezekiel’s dad for the first time.
‘Will his mind be okay; will he still be able to function?’
‘Yes, he will remember everything, he will miss his wolf, that is for sure, but I am sure he is trying his best.’ I could hear the emotion Ezekiel was fighting too, and I wanted to reassure him all would be well, but I couldn’t, I just did not know if he would come out of this okay and if he has no wolf, would he still want me?’
Thanks dad, do you need me to attend the meeting with the Elders when they arrive?’
‘If you can manage it, I would, we need to be seen as one in this, and you are the only one who can answer some of the questions. I am sorry to drag you away from here. But we have to put the packs first.’
‘I understand, dad, let me know when and I will be there.’
Ezekiel left the room with the doctor, and I climbed up onto the bed, snuggled up beside my mate and closed my eyes, my heart heavy with guilt for not being there earlier and for not asking for more information when I was told it was a training accident; but it never occurred to me that it could be the they type of accident.
