The Wannabe Warrior -
Chapter 133
Madison POV
His whispered reply made my heart sing, he was back, but I could feel he was coming back alone.
How did I know?
I cannot tell you, just that I felt deep inside of me that his wolf was not with him and he was sad, but accepting of the loss.
My heart was breaking for his loss, but I knew the wolf was not dead or dying. Betsy said he was going for a long run to clear his head, but he would be back one day. She was sad too. Her mate had run off without her and so she was curled up in the back of my mind sulking. As I would have expected her to.
I quickly rushed to our room to get him some clothes, and as I passed Ezekiel in the hallway, I told him that Zane was awake and would be there for dinner, and rushed back out the door and to the hospital.
The nurse I had fought with was on duty, but one look at me and she shrank back into a ward and avoided contact, like she should she is lucky to still be alive, though her smile will always remind her that I pack a punch, her two front teeth are missing, and I am not sure how well false teeth would go, she would have to remove them to shift, and does her wolf have teeth or are they missing too. Wow, I need to see that, it will look funny to see a wolf missing two front teeth. Luckily, it was not her large incisors that would be hard for the wolf. Could she get implants? Such weird thoughts rushed through my mind as I hastened to get Zane’s clothes and return.
Zane took his clothes from me with a grateful smile, he looked tired, and his stomach reminded me again, that he had not eaten. His stomach was empty. That must have been the reason he had managed to wake up in time for dinner, or so I had thought, and the family would be glad to see that he was back.
As expected, the moment we entered the dining hall, Ezekiel was up and gathering his son in his arms and, to my surprise, swung him around in the air, as if he was a small boy. Ezekiel’s face, as he twirled, was breathtaking, his face beamed with such joy and everyone in the room was witness to Alpha’s magnificent glow. The power and energy pouring off Ezekiel would have been felt by all and even the strongest would have found it hard not to be excited as Ezekiel was at that moment.
Dinner was easy, no one asked any questions of Zane, he happily said he was back and to give him a day to rest.
We followed our small little group to Ezekiel’s office, and dad closed the door.
‘How are you really feeling son?’ Ezekiel asked, kindly, as he took a seat on the sofa and looked at Zane expectantly and hopefully.
‘Won’t lie dad, I am exhausted. So very very exhausted.’ He spoke forlornly.
‘Your wolf?’ Mitch asked, the question on everyone’s mind, but no one wanted to be the one to ask the question.
‘Blaze is not here with me at the moment, he is still in the void, he ran off and I have no idea if he will be back.’ Zane’s voice broke as he tried to explain.
‘Mitch. Betsy said he had gone on a long run, but will return when he is ready.’ I said, as I rubbed Zane’s arm with encouragement.
‘He told her that?’ he asked, surprised and in wonderment. Hope glimmered in his face for the first time since he woke up.
‘Yes, Betsy was sulking at the moment, she had told him off, telling him to get his act together, or as much as a wolf can tell another wolf that his behaviour is unacceptable, and I am sorry Zane, but I think it was Betsy that made him take off. She was really angry with him and let him feel her anger.’ I was sad for Zane. He was going to have to wait and see what becomes of his wolf and, in the meantime, learn to live without him nagging him in the back of his brain.
‘That is good news, he has not died. That means you will still have all your wolf abilities, just not be able to shift at the moment.’ Dad said with excitement.
‘Agreed, this is a good outcome.’ Ezekiel agreed, a beaming smile on his face as he watched his tired son struggling with this news and we could tell Zane could not see how this was good news yet.
‘Though a better outcome would have been for Blaze to submit, this is better than losing your wolf. You will still have the wolf benefits, including healing, your sight and smell. You do not realise how much heightened all that is until you lose it, and believe me, you don’t want to become a normal human, and start getting colds and sicknesses. I remember a human friend from my school days that had died prematurely from a human sickness. You don’t want to go through that.’ Mitch explained as he wiped a single tear as it fell down his cheek.
‘Yes, we should all be grateful, we often take our wolf for granted, but what that wolf can give us is more than we really acknowledge or understand.’ Ryan looks over at me and smiles softly, before turning to the inner room door and opening it.
‘Son, come into the inner office, we have a lot to fill you in on, and we need to know how much you want to get involved with our next steps.’ Ezekiel turns and heads into the room, followed by dad and Mitch. I stood and offered my hand to Zane and he tiredly took it. I gently pulled him up to a stand and walked with him to the door. I stopped to let him in first, and closed and locked the door before replaceing a seat.
